The victim, Miguel Lugo, 42, of Lorain, first reported the alleged threat to the Huron County Sheriff’s Office in May, Huron County Sheriff’s Detective Kayla Zander said.
Jeremiah Weitzel, 28, allegedly threatened to share personal information about Lugo unless Lugo gave him $2,500, Zander said.
Lugo had once been Weitzel’s supervisor at the Uptown Cafe in Norwalk.
“Basically, he had received some personal letters of Miguel’s through the garbage can and was blackmailing him for those letters,” Zander said.
When detectives interviewed Weitzel about the allegations, he made some admissions to the crime, she said. A Huron County grand jury indicted Weitzel Friday on charges of extortion, a felony punishable by up to three years in prison.
