Search for missing Huron man suspended

Land, air and water searches have yielded no answers in the mysterious disappearance of Nathan Dickey.

Land, air and water searches have yielded no answers in the mysterious disappearance of Nathan Dickey.

The latest development in the search: On Thursday a volunteer worked with police and used his helicopter to conduct a search by air for the Iraq War veteran, who police fear drowned in the Huron River this past weekend.

Huron firefighters, meanwhile, suspended a water search for Dickey, saying they’ll be available if someone spots something in the water.

Five days after Dickey disappeared, there is still no answer to the question his family and friends are asking: What happened?

Dickey, 21, of Canton Avenue in Huron, was last seen shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday as he walked away drunk from a group of friends after drinking at i5’s Bar and Grill in downtown Huron.

Sunday evening, Dickey’s housemate, Meredith Gallegos, reported him missing.

Since then, police have had no luck tracking him down.

Earlier this week, officers used a bloodhound to follow Dickey’s scent in the area, while dive teams combed the bottom of the Huron River in hopes of finding even a clue.

Dickey’s shoe was found floating in the river earlier this week, leading police to speculate he may have drowned in the river. Even so, there’s no hard evidence of that, police said.

A puddle of vomit was found near the Huron River Tuesday afternoon, which only fueled speculation that Dickey walked to river’s edge after he wandered away from friends Sunday morning.

According to a police report, Dickey was highly intoxicated and was upset at the group he’d been drinking with.

Dickey has been in the Ohio National Guard since March 2007.

He spent the last year in Iraq working as a combat engineer, the Army’s version of a construction worker, according to James Sims, of the National Guard’s public affairs office.

Dickey was deployed overseas in May 2009, serving with the 1192nd Engineering Co. until he returned home in May. He’s currently an active service member with the National Guard, attending monthly drills, Sims said.

“As far as him being declared missing by local authorities, I’m not sure what that will do to his drill orders,” Sims said.

Dickey had previously lived in the Columbus area where his grandfather, estranged wife and 11-month-old daughter still reside. Most recently he was living in the Canton Avenue home with Gallegos.

Folks it's the government. He will be considered AWOL until a body is found . Heartwarming?

mommaofboyz

I don't think he will be AWOL by the government unless he doesn't show up for drills, then he would be AWOL until he is found.

unjudgemental

What a shame...that he will be considered "AWOL" when something serious could be wrong with him, or he could be so badly injured that he can't get to help somewhere out of the way. Or worse...which we all pray isn't the case. The Government in this country sucks...period, end of story! To the family...many people are hoping and praying that he is found safe, and all turns out well! God Bless you all....

All my prayers to Nathan, his family, and friends. Too much speculation as to what happened or what may happen by the government if he is not found. No one really knows anything but that a wonderful young man is missing. No one is to blame. Not Nathan, not his friends, not the HPD. May he be found soon.

Clown......you are ASSUMING you know what happened. are you Nathan or God?? No.....you ARE a true clown.......you made me laugh! meanwhile....i am still praying.

Clown, please show some compassion.  Tragic accidents are just that - unexpected tragedies.  What does blaming anyone solve?  Your own issues?

Don't know if it's true but I heard they found this poor guy................................

As each day  goes  bye  our best  hope is that  he  can be found in good shape and has  been  staying somewhere  with a friend.  Our thoughts and prayers  go out to  him and his  family and friends.

To  Nathan if you are reading  any of the things in the newspaper, please  do the right thing and contact  your family!!!! They  love you and want you back  safe and sound!!!

Everyone agrees but some things are better off not said, they are understood.  The ones who feel the need to comment anything negative (fact or not) I feel sorry for you.  You all know that family and friends read these and to be negative in such a time is deplorable.  This is an American veteran we are missing and God help us we find him and bring him home safely.

Julie, not sure where you heard that but it's not true.  I just spoke with my son who is down along the water and they are still searching.

Please everyone continue praying for Nate's safe return.......we love you Nate !!

Duhast

So, does the military get involved in the search or do they defer that to local authorities?  Just curious.  I would assume they've been notified by the authorities.

we all love nathan

the dna testing on the vomit  has it been started.. what has it determined? How long does DNA testing take.

the divers only did their thing for one day? how many hours were they in the water?

the shoe that was found... one report said friends found it in the water and they are the ones who took the police to it..    Is Nathan the only one in that area that wears that particular size and brand.. are there any tests that can be done on the shoe to ascertain that it is his shoe.

The blood hound led to the water or near the water?

What about the dogs that search for cadaviers?

A million questions run through my mind as I am sure they do for other people.  If these are his close friends why didnt they look for him sunday morning..when they got back to the house and he was not home?  Are all of his clothes still at the house.  Are they sure he only had one pair of the shoes.  Most people when they like a particular brand have a couple pair?  Dumpsters near the bar did they contain anything he could have tossed.. his phone.. upset with friends.. toss the phone they will leave you alone.  Too many things just go unanswered. I have read the messages on facebook.. i have read the comments on here... just really being mislead by it all... I understand for some things closure never happens.. answers are never found..  but I like when what I read adds up.. and something here is not adding up.

Can we all be politically correct. Only positive comments. Someone may take offense to a comment. Maybe the police should only follow up on positive information. Maybe the authorities should only search during daylight because we don't want to say dark. How about we all hold hands and sing kum-by-ya rather than follow up every lead. Again, we don't want to make anyone feel bad. Don't get your goodie two shoes dirty. Maybe we should fill in the river so no one can drown. While we are at it lets fill in the lake. Can't we all just get along?
