A Fremont couple was killed Monday afternoon in a four-vehicle crash on Ohio 2 at the Camp Perry entrance, the Sandusky post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.
Jerald Zimmer, 78, of Fremont, was driving east on Ohio 2 at 4:49 p.m. when he tried to turn left into Camp Perry, according to the OSHP report. He failed to yield to an oncoming 1999 Dodge Caravan driven by Rosalinda Guerra, 34, of Toledo. The Caravan struck Zimmer's 2009 Honda Accord, then collided with a 2013 Chevrolet Sonic that was stopped at a stop sign at Camp Perry waiting to enter Ohio 2.
The Sonic, driven by Margaret Cumberland, 56, of Hilliard, Ohio, then struck a 1994 Lexus driven by Anna Murphy, 59, of Kenton, Ohio, the patrol said. The Lexus was also stopped at the Camp Perry stop sign.
Zimmer was taken by medical helicopter to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, where he was pronounced dead, OSHP said. His passenger, Rosanne Zimmer, 74, of Fremont, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Guerra was also taken by medical helicopter to Mercy St. Vincent, OSHP said. Her passenger Alexandra Davis, 32, from Toledo was taken to Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton with incapacitating injuries. Their conditions were not available Monday night. Four other passengers in the Caravan, ranging in age from 7-15 and all from Toledo, were treated at the Magruder emergency room and released.
Cumberland was taken to the Magruder emergency room with incapacitating injuries, the patrol said. Her passenger, Harold Cumberland, 54, of Hilliard, sustained minor injuries and was not treated.
Neither Murphy nor her passengers, Garron Fischmann, 49, and Ashlynn Fischmann, 10, both of Kenton, were injured in the crash.
The crash is still under investigation and no citations have been issued. It does not appear that alcohol or drugs were involved, OSHP said.
