Try not to look Mexican

Rule No. 1 in a town patrolled by U.S. Border Patrol — don’t be Mexican.

Or at least, don’t look, act or talk like a Mexican.

That’s the message seven Sandusky teens took home Wednesday night when their walk downtown — a daily ritual for the teens — was cut short by two U.S. Border Patrol agents.

“I have no idea what I was doing,” said Juan Valles, 17. “I wasn’t doing anything.”

A Sandusky High student and U.S. resident for 15 years — he was born in Mexico — Juan was pulled aside by the two Border Patrol agents at about 7:30 p.m. in the county’s downtown parking garage on Columbus Avenue.

He and his six friends were walking out of the parking garage, leaving their car to hang out downtown. It’s something the group does every day, opting for the free parking in the county garage.

Juan was street level near the county garage separated from his friends when the Border agents began questioning him.

nonconformist ,  No, I do not have a doctorate. I do not have  any degree for that matter.  All I have is a SHS edumacation . ha ha     I mean really, I don't even know what a fin Doctor is .  What I do have is a wonderful step father who happens to be Hispanic.  He is a very hard working, loyal, trustworthy man. I am blessed to have him in my life.

I am more worried about all these shootings in our area. So Sam, what is the percentage of Mexicans doing the shootings ?

pattyg

Juan is a good kid, "not a vandal, theft, etc., and he and his friends had nothing to do with the recent shootings.

My husband was born in Puerto Rico in 1948, he came to the states when he was 3.  Most US citizens don't realize that our country took this territory, the island of (Puerto Rico), during the spanish/ameican war in the 1800, and that the U.S made all citizens on the island of Puerto Rico, U.S. citizens in 1917.

MY HUSBAND AND HIS FATHER WERE BORN U.S. CITIZENS.  My husband's grandfather served in WWI, (not born a US Citizen but died one), My father-in-law served in WWII with many metals and my husband served during Vietnam.

re: They must be psychic

I was hoping that one of the Sandusky scanner listeners would post that it came over the scanner.

I posted a direct question, took a wag that scanner might be the reply, no such luck.

Oy Kimo!!! I like your comment. The SR likes to treat readers like mushrooms, keep'm in the dark and feed'm sh**. Do not politicians and the government treat us the same way?

AS I DRIVE BACK AND FORTH TO VERMILION AND SANDUSKY I ALWAYS PASS THE GAS GUZZLING IMMIGRANT BUSTERS, OBVIOUSLY KEEPING US SAFE FROM THE HOARDES OF ILLEAGALS CROSSING OVER FROM CANADA.. I STOP AT QUAKER STEAK AND THERES $300,OOO. OF MY TAX DOLLARS TIED UP AT THE DOCK AS THESE EGGHEADS LOOK COOL IN THEIR PARA-MILITARY GET-UP, HITTING ON THE BABES ON THE DOCK. I CAN'T BELIEVE NO ONE THINKS BORDER PATROL AND CUSTOMS IN OUR AREA IS THE BIGGEST WASTE OF TAXPAYER MONEY EVER ALLOCATED. I REALLY CAN'T BLAME THEM AS THEY WERE BLESSED WITH BIG BUDGETS THROUGH HOMELAND SECURITY BY GEORGE JR.

ANYONE WHO FEELS SCARED OR FEELS WE NEED THESE GUYS SHOULD BUY THEIR OWN GUN. THE TERROISTS WIN WHEN WE WASTE OUR MONEY ON NEEDLESS HIGH DOLLAR BOATS, SUVS AND AIRCRAFT SO WE CAN CATCH A KID WHO LOOKS MEXICAN WALKING IN A PARKING GARAGE..

Why single out one Hispanic , when local establishments employ groups of them. Certain establishments even house them  in not so desirable areas of town. I wouldn't want those groups of people to be in trouble either, but I wonder if " Mexicans" are only good enough when they are making money for certain establishments with their cheap labor and rental agreements.

betty ann

I can not beleve you people!! I live in Las Cruces,NM what is a Hispanic suppose to look like???? I was born in Fostoria ,OH rasied just out side of Bellevue,OH and now I am ashamed to say where I come from. I have lived here 32 years and just found out my husband who is hispanic has family in Sandusky and Norwalk with an aunt who just passed away in Norwalk this week who was hispanic worked as a nurse and took care of alot of you. there is good and bad in any race. I think you all up there still think of the hispanics as only dirty farm workers well guess what they are Doctors and Lawyers, and live and make more money then you do and dress better then most of you too. You should all be ashamed of yourself we are all not better then the other.

Re: betty ann , I dont think Border Patrol is going to mess with doctors and lawyers who 'look' Hispanic . I think they are going to focus on (1) Hispanic restaurant owners  who may employ illegals (2) Hispanic looking people who appear to be walking aimlessly around town. The authorities did a big investigation on our local Mexican restaurants , I am just wondering how many investigations were done on our local non Hispanic company owners who hire "illegals"?  Maybe only certain people are allowed to employ illegal immigrants.  Who determines which ones  stay or which ones go ? It should be All Or None !

The government must have a warrant based on probable cause and signed by a neutral and detached magistrate; or they need probable cause based on articulable suspicion to act this way.  They had neither, making what they did to this kid an unlawful search and seizure in violation of the Fourth Amendment to both the United States and Ohio Constitutions.

We are no where near the Mexican border, yet we have these jack-booted thugs illegally harassing legitimate citizens. (It would be equally appalling if it occured in a border town).

Last time I heard of police being able to say "show us your papers!" was in Nazi Germany, and we all know how that turned out.

bobaluey

betty ann..., cool your jets, you don't know for certain  who your  M-I-L   took care of.

Look at this from a  financial point of view, first and foremost.   This is about  being illegal.  What part of that don't you get?    Ps.  I dare you to sneak into another country and see how they treat Americans.

I agree with  katelih,  who  has a good point  in regards to the  Hispanic restuarant owners, look at the   operation with the Casa Fiesta  owner, and he isn't the only  one in this area to employ illegals,  Oh, and the landscape places and the big Farms around Celeryville/ Willard area.

starryeyes83

I say the more they can  round up the illegals and ship them back home.  The better.

This country doesn't have to worry about being occupied by  Nazi  Germany-- the President of Mexico will see to that!!

Raoul Duke

Actually, we are a border town. But the Canadian aliens blend right in with us regular white folks.

I blame the Frito Bandito for the recent crimes in Sandusky......

Anyone see Juan Valdez hanging around the downtown, its 100% Colombian.........

These kids should have ran for the border, or Taco Bell whats ever closer.......

silvereagle_1

right on starry****it's amazing how much the obama administration "listens" to the mexican president when it comes to this country's immigration laws an' deportation of illegals.

ragtop66

RE: Starry and silver...I agree with both of you. Good points to bring up and correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't  Obama want to partner up with Calderon to build a superhighway from Mexico through the US and into Canada or has this already been started or completed?

And then don't they both want to partner with Canadian prime minister and combine all three countries?  I do know that this was being discussed not long ago.

Appreciate any information out there on this.

WRONG! The police can stop you based on suspicion of criminal activity. You can be questioned and you can be searched for the officers safety.  Read the laws. There were no laws broken here by anyone, period!

Buff

Hey 40, put down your 40 long enough to read carefully.  I said probable cause based on articulable suspicion.  That's what you said.

If you took the time to read the story, this young man was singled out because he "looked Mexican", not because the officers had articulable suspicion of criminal activity.

I love it when people make my point for me because they don't really get it!

Katelih-Trailer...

Why dont all races come together and stand united. That is when and only when we will be able to overturn our government.  Lets get rid of all our documentation and personal information. EVERYONE take the license plate off their car(s) and refuse to show identification when asked. Everyone be encrypted on their phones and computers. I really dont see a lot of racism . What I do see is blacks shooting blacks, whites killing their family members , Mexicans .... well, uh, okay one mexican stabbed one mexican  at Don Juans . If we could first get along with our own race then maybe get along with other races ,we would be huge in numbers ! Okay, back to reality now. Just forget what I said. I am just joking.

Speakezy

Buff,

It was simply the fact the he looked "Mexican"  that's why he was stopped. Did you ask the officers involved, or are you going off what is spued in this rag? Could he have been stopped because he was in a parking garage at 7:30 pm with other youth? Could the officer have been actually performing PROACTIVE police work by simply QUESTIONING this kid as to what is going on? Maybe Juan had answered a question or was acting in a manner that raised suspision with the officer which lead to him asking if he was legal.

Where is this crime that you speak of ? "They had neither, making what they did to this kid an unlawful search and seizure in violation of the Fourth Amendment to both the United States and Ohio Constitutions." How were his rights violated? If he was searched, I can bet it was for the safety of the officers, making sure Juan didn't have any weapons. Did the officers "Seize" any of his LEGAL posessions, or did they give it back to him when they were finished? If you are a lawyer and think Juan has a case, why not represent him pro bono?

The fact is, you know no laws were broken and just like to fan the flames to make yourself feel important. Get a life, or better yet a job!

Raoul Duke

Even if you factor out the illegal alien angle, unless he was actually doing something wrong, why would authorities have the right to stop him and check his ID anyway? The parking garage is open to the public, and people are encouraged to use it. At 7:30, teenagers are allowed to be out of their homes. And even if it were past the curfew, how would you feel if the police stopped you JUST because you look young, and you were actually 25?
If this young man was there to commit a crime, the mere presence of a uniformed police officer would have been enough to stop him. Police exist as a deterrent, and to respond to reports of crimes committed, not to interpret the law or to speculate that an individual is about to commit a crime and detain them.

Buff

He wasn't charged with a crime.  He was singled out because of the way he looked.  You don't have to be a scholar of the law to know that no one should have to be subjected to detention and interrogation when they have done nothing to raise articulable suspicion on the part of law enforcement.

Why weren't the other people with him treated the same way?

LADY1978

The moment we give the people the rights to pull us over or stop us on the street due to our skin color. Is when our freedom stops.Yes I agree mexicans should come here legally.I'm totally for that. But also if we round up all the illegal mexicans and send them back, how many of their children will be left here because they are legal.I'm sorry that's more children in foster homes which our tax dollars pay.I may not be right in how I feel, but maybe the ones who have children here should get a chance to show they are doing the right thing and have the chance to become legal here.Yes 10 years ago it was way easier to become legal than it is now.I know an illegal who has tried getting his papers and yes he works and pays taxes plus he pays thousands of dollars trying to get these citizen papers which won't ever happen but he keeps appealing cause he has children here. His 8 year old daughter went to court in Cleveland with him cause the judge wanted to talk to her. After asking the little girl all the questions like does she love her daddy,he had the nerve to tell an 8 yr old child you don't need a dad who is illegal. Is it right to be illegal no but also start thinking about their children too.Trust me I watched this lil girl go home crying not understand why everyone hated her father cause of where he was born.Remember we are all Gods Children.

Julie R.

If a Cleveland judge really said that to an 8 year old child then I think somebody should be investigating the half-witted judge! Maybe give him a drug test or something........

LADY1978

Yes Julie and that is why I am torn between this .I have the biggest heart when it comes to children. So I understand both sides. If they want them to become legal then maybe they should make it easier.Paying thousands of dollars for the past 5 years to be told you're still going back to me seems like our government is crooked. They will except that money but still turn you away.
