Try not to look Mexican

Rule No. 1 in a town patrolled by U.S. Border Patrol — don’t be Mexican.

Or at least, don’t look, act or talk like a Mexican.

That’s the message seven Sandusky teens took home Wednesday night when their walk downtown — a daily ritual for the teens — was cut short by two U.S. Border Patrol agents.

“I have no idea what I was doing,” said Juan Valles, 17. “I wasn’t doing anything.”

A Sandusky High student and U.S. resident for 15 years — he was born in Mexico — Juan was pulled aside by the two Border Patrol agents at about 7:30 p.m. in the county’s downtown parking garage on Columbus Avenue.

He and his six friends were walking out of the parking garage, leaving their car to hang out downtown. It’s something the group does every day, opting for the free parking in the county garage.

Juan was street level near the county garage separated from his friends when the Border agents began questioning him.

For the whole story, go to the Register's e*Paper or pick up a copy of Thursday's Register at a newsstand near you.

So they person was asked for ID?  My gosh, will they ever recover from such harrassment?

Sam

I would have to have ALL the facts in this incident, lets face it the Registerag does sometimes have a biased and anti-law enforcement agenda.  My other comment how many Canadians are trying to sneak into this country and violate our laws.

Let's see...a teen age boy in a parking garage alone...I'd say that warrents a closer look. Sandusky Register...you are doing a disservice to this community and to these kids.

Load them up with a chip on their shoulder. As if people don't have enough reason to feel entitled.

So much spin I'm dizzy...at least I'm not the only one who reads through your BS.

HKS

The way I see it, a law enforcement officer has the right to stop anyone, anytime, for any reason.  It only becomes unethical if they detain you, or otherwise wrongfully impinge on your livelihood.  Being momentarily stopped by an officer to answer a few basic questions is NOT an infringement of constitutional rights.

afastfour: The kid wasn't alone in a parking garage.  He was with 6 of his friends.  The fact that they singled this kid out and none of the other 6 is discrimination.  The Border Patrol needs to check EVERYONE's ID; white people can be illegal too, you know.

afast4

If you read the article, his friends were on the roof, he was alone on the ground floor.

This is the kind of thing that Dr. Rufus Sanders writes about all the time..........will someone please now believe him.......not only does he write about the stuff he is expert on race relationships.....he teaches at a University............

PiggersIsDaMan

If it was not for the shootings over the past couple months I would not be reading this garbage. Talk about desperation for news!

NOmoreFREErides

I have been riding in cars being pulled over for speeding been asked for ID handed it over with no complaints from me or the police. If you have no warrants OR ARE IN OUR COUNTRY LEGALLY then you have nothing to worry about. The more the register and our national media keep spinning these stories it will cause constant backlash towards law enforcement every time they do their job. I routinely show my ID for various reasons multiple times a day. I guess I need to start crying discrimination every time i'm asked. Maybe a better tan and I can start palying the race card everywhere.

R U Serious

I understand the the checking of the I.D. but the hole Rufus Bunker ooops I mean Archie Sanders thing is confusing!

 Wow, quite the conservative tone...

The fact is we have a Border Patrol station that has to justify its existence to keep those federal dollars coming in. I would call it a wast of money, but ya'll conservatives can differ.

So they have to go after every tan person they see. That's just all there is to it. We can't feel too bad for illegal immigrants, but this sort of reporting at least keeps them honest.

It should be reported every time they stop someone for being tan and it turns out be an american citizen. They may have rules other than local law enforcement, but the SR is doing a good job here.

I bet they don't bother too many Perk-a-hontises coming out of the tanning beds or tourists at Kalahari. That would get them in trouble.

lamorena

AT NOMOREFREERIDES! YOUR AN IDIOT .... YEA THE POLICE WERE JUSTIFIED IN PULLING YOU OVER BC YOU WERE SPEEDING!!!! WHICH IS ILLEGAL... RACIAL PROFILING IS NOT JUSTIFIED AND THAT FACT THAT THEY REFFERED TO HIM AS AN ILLEGAL ALIEN LIKE IT WAS NAME IS OUTRAGEOUS. I KNOW HIM PERSONALLY AND HE IS NOT THE TYPE TO PULL THE RACE CARD ALL THE TIME. AND OHIO DOES HAVE ITS RACES TENDENCIES IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY DIDNT SOME OFFICERS NOT TOO LONG AGO GET INTROUBLE FOR POSING AS KKK FOR A "JOKE"?

CheObama

Think you could drop the caps, we can all read you fine? Try a little better spelling also, you do not need to alter words to cram in a few more to get your point across.

chow559

Who gives a crap, really. It's not like border patrol is going to question African Americans to see if they illegally came in from Mexico. Question them. If they're clean, send them on their way. If not, deport them. Isn't that the job of the border patrol? What should they do, wait until someone comes up and says "I'm an illegal alien. Please do your job."  Seriously.

I am legal American citizen and I must show my ID when:
     1.  Pulled over by the police.     2.  Making purchases on my department store credit card.      3.  When I show up for a doctor's appointment.
   4.  When filling out a credit card or loan application.
   5.  When applying for or renewing a driver's license or passport.
    6.  When applying for any kind of insurance.
    7.  When filling out college applications.
  8.  When donating blood.
  9.  When obtaining certain prescription drugs.   10.  When making some debit purchases, especially if I'm out of state.
11. When collecting a boarding pass for airline or train travel.

I'm sure there are more instances, but the point is that we citizens of the USA are required to prove who we are nearly every day! Why should people in this country illegally, be exempt!!!!! Why shouldn't we guard our borders as closely as every other country in the world does?

brownbear

Proud to be a Mexican American. Yes I was born in the USA. So was my dad and mother.  They worked hard just like any body else.  Did we get made fun of because of our color of or skin,  yes. Did we get the dirty jobs no body else wanted ,Yes.  What is wrong or right? First the Indians, blacks and now browns.  With all due respects.  What now, thrity years from now ,all whites go back to where ever they come from?  One little thing we all forget?  God created us all,and may God bless you.

Sam

brown bear said "What now, thrity years from now ,all whites go back to where ever they come from?"

Answer-We would achieved total government dependence?

The Border Patrol needs to be a little less bias when stopping people; cannot  nonwhite kids be just as delinquent ?  An apology needs to be issued to the young man.

When is someone going to make this newspaper stop causing so much trouble? It has gotten waaaaay out of hand. No wonder noone has to obey the law anymore. It's a shame that everyone has to be suspicious of everybody anymore but it sure wasn't the law enforcement that has caused this. You can blame this newspaper for some people that think they can go out and do whatever criminal behavior they want....this newspaper will back them when they get caught. Racial tensions in Sandusky? Who's to blame? THIS RAG! Must have lost alot of business because they will go as low as they can to try to get it back.
As others here have said....I have to pull out my ID several times a day....do I care? Not at all. If an officer decides to pull me over....ask for ID.....no problem.....nothing to hide here...and they are doing a job that I am very thankful for.

Kramer

As a white male, I hereby declare that any police officer may ask for my ID whenever they want.

Perkins2060

When will all you morons that were born here realize that you are AMERICANS???  What is this Mexican American, Italian American, African American CRAP???  I'm an AMERICAN BORN HERE!  My family is of Italian descent!  I AM AN AMERICAN!!! Get over yourselves!

mikel

lamorena says "AT NOMOREFREERIDES! YOUR AN IDIOT .... YEA THE POLICE WERE JUSTIFIED IN PULLING YOU OVER BC YOU WERE SPEEDING!!!! WHICH IS ILLEGAL... "  so why do you complain about undocumented people in this country being discriminated against?  they are here illegally which according to you justifies law enforcement asking them questions or detaining them.  however, not precisely in this case.

bigdad1205

Sounds like a officer doing his job. Keep up the good work Mr. Border Partrol whomever you are.

HKS

"sounds like they owe the young man an apology"...

Fine.  But I'm sick of these public politically correct apologies that are just lip service to save a career.  Don't call a press conference and half-heartedly extoll the virtues of some ethnic culture and vow to meet with Jesse Jackson.  Handle it man-to-man and be done with it.

What I really wish is that illegal immigrants realize how much they are screwing things up for their legal counterparts, like what happened to this young man.  If you are in the country illegally, find a job, keep you head down, and shut up.  Don't insult all the naturalized citizens by demanding equal rights without the same sacrifices they have made!

TRY NOT TO LOOK MEXICAN
What a title!
BURGLARS SUNK AFTER TRYING TO SINK SAFE
No comments on that story? Why would that be? They don't have a race card to cry about? Not a big enough troublemaking story? No one cares? Why? Because they are not Mexican?
What color are they? Are they American? Well, one good thing....law enforcement isn't being degraded because they arrested them. ~sigh~

samiam

"A Sandusky High student and U.S. resident for 15 years — he was born in Mexico — "  So is he here legally or not?  Just because he's been here 15 years doesn't make him legal.  Likewise, just because he was born in Mexico doesn't make him illegal.

brutus smith

The Indians think we are all illegal immigrants.

Speakezy

Maybe the rule of thumb is to not look like a CRIMINAL!

ragtop66

This is the kind of article that fuels the fires!!!!!

Digger Nick...I totally agree..........you rock.
