Unofficial election results: Perkins Schools levy fails
Register
Aug 6, 2013

UPDATED 8:20 p.m.:

Unofficial initial results, with all precincts counted, indicate the levy has failed:

Against the tax levy: 2,482 (53.68%)

For the tax levy: 2,142 (46.32%)

* * *

Perkins Schools is proposing a 10-year, 6.73-mill emergency operating levy to voters.

If approved, the levy would generate about $2.8 million annually for the district, which would stabilize its deficit budget and restore $2 million in costly cuts approved earlier this summer.

It would cost the owner of a $100,000 home an additional $206 in taxes each year

Any update on absentee and early voter results?

fifteenthgreen

Ok Gunner and BOE. Time to implement those Pay to Play fees and sadly lay off the 14 teachers instead of cutting free laptop programs. I don't think you'll do it!!! If you don't, you'll lose even more credibility....and the November attempt!

Perkins2060

It will pass. Don't even bother checking.

Updated at 8:30. I stand corrected. Thank you Perkins Voters!

camm

Why can they post a sign out front of the church on Columbus ave that says vote for the Levy

beborcott

44 percent for to 56 percent against. absentee vote (electionsonthe.net)

beborcott

one step ahead of you sandusky register. no wonder newspapers are damn near extinct

chongo

One of the many election laws limit campaigning within a certain distance of a polling place. Signs at the road are far enough away from the polling location/room. Not sure of the true distance, but remember reading that somewhere.

chongo

If it passes, I'd be amazed. A lot of people out there are just tired of paying and paying and paying.. I hate to say it, but one group of students one day will have to take one for the team. By that, I mean they must go through a stretch of constant NO votes, just in hopes of forcing our state government to do something that our state Supreme Court told them to do what, 30 years ago?..

icles?

God Of Thunder

Go to the board of elections website...Much more updated and quickly...

So far...The NO votes are winning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yellow Snow

By the upcoming November vote, they will register a whole bunch more newly 18 year olds who will vote "Yes" then leave for college, never to pay the tax increase they vote for.

Jesus was for the levy failing?

Transplant1

With all of this passion from this community on yes and no, and moving from a community passionate about yes and no on school levies, when are the people, both yes and no voters going to go after the state of Ohio and press the unconstitutional way of funding schools from the land owners through proper taxation. It seems very cowardly to go after your own community both yes and no voters, but not to go after the people who are actually doing us wrong. When are people really going to man up and take a stand?

God Of Thunder

You think no one has voiced opinions in the past??? Our state reps, if that's what you want to call them, have known about his for many years, and Ohioans elect a nitwit governor who makes it even worse.. I have said for a long time...Anyone who is in there now, needs to be voted out and people need to run who have an agenda to change the way schools are funded.

Good 2 B Me

Nitwit Governor! I love it and share your feelings on him! Time to give him the boot too!

God Of Thunder

I call em as I see em!!

moonbeam

AMEN! We need to hold the state accountable. Instead of stealing funding to stick in the state coiffure, come up with a fair way to put all school systems on equal footing with everyone paying their fair share, not just property owners!

Perkins2060

Thank you Perkins Residents!

vigilante

So I got to pay over 600 in school fees now?

Yellow Snow

pay it for a few short years, or pass a levy and pay it for life.

God Of Thunder

Yep!!!!!! And I don't have to chuck out another 500 a year for a poorly run school system

Perkins2060

Perkins2060

The board should vote immediately to remove Gunner.

Curley

I agree with Perkins2060 they should remove Gunner immediately. He has not lived up to his contract by moving to the township. But yet he takes their money and goes home to where he lives and spend it. It should be here in Sandusky and not out of town. Maybe the board better take a good look at Gunner and ask for his two week notice. There should be enough qualified people in Perkins School System that can take over and run the schools. First of all get rid of Gunner, then maybe you will pass levies.

bobshumway92

I agree!

Good 2 B Me

YES! No confidence!

camm

Amen

Pulling my kid out and sending her to SANDUSKY...

fifteenthgreen

Now let's see if the scare tactics are implemented! I guarantee you they'll retract most of the fees and laid off teachers!!!

WesTaylor

The coaches were told to call all players, and let them know the money is due. Some good teachers just left to other districts. Yeah, scare tactics.....

fifteenthgreen

We didn't get a call. hmmmmm..... I truly wish them well. Hopefully they found a fiscally sound district in this state.

Hoss McGee

Looks like Strohl will be cleaning his desk and office tomorrow. Oh wait that was just a scare tactic! Prove us wrong Gooner!! I mean Gunner

After reading the count, the saddest part of the election is not it did or did not pass. It is that there are over 10000 registered voters in the community, and not even half of them voted. I brought home many of many of men and women from war since 2001, have seen the first hand horror of what happens for freedom to vote, and have seen the success of voting as in Iraq and Afghanistan and it a shame that people do not vote. I would love to meet a person who did not vote one way or the other and then try to give me an opinion one way or the other. Seriously, man up, take the bulls by the horns. Apparently now that it is over everyone will hole back up with nothing to say until november and then everyone will be back out with something to say.

chongo

I was wondering the same thing about this after reading the totals.. It's truly sad when it comes to turnouts on election day. It honestly takes about 5 minutes, but we live in a world where people say they don't care and that is their reason for not voting. Or they claim to be too busy, or other lame excuses. Too much of that in this country. Take the time, be involved, no matter your viewpoint because it matters.

eriemom

I have asked people who do not vote "Why?" and every time I'm told that he or she is afraid of being called for jury duty.

Weird, but true.

Perkins2060

I can't wait to see how many open enrollment kids and DOLLARS we lose now because of Gunners scare tactics. Sit back and enjoy the show!

Perkins2060

Sandusky Register: Can you please get an official statement from Gunner? I can't wait to hear this!

underthebridge

I think they will and it will be the students programs and teachers on the chopping block not Gunner unless the YES voters demand his termination. Oh wait, can't happen because this BOE gave him a contract until 2015.

Good 2 B Me

The person that called and tried to solicit my Yes vote, argued with me about me voting against the levy by saying that Gunner was retiring at the end of this School Year. We shall see. I think that we need to find a way to remove him before that!

WesTaylor

Not true. He isn't retiring.

Transplant1

I hope you no people don't go to any events to watch friends or family. That would be irony if you do. And if you do, are you going to help them pay for the events they participate in?

chongo

Yes we will, and yes we will pay for the events they partake in.. by doing so, I'm supporting the students and taking an active part in doing my part. Also did my part today with a NO vote.. See ya at the game!

fifteenthgreen

You think they'll lay off one of only two band directors in such a prestigious program? NO WAY! Watch. Mysteriously, hidden funds will become available....and rightfully so!

WesTaylor

They gave one of the pink slip last week. No hidden funds......

fifteenthgreen

Not true.

Pirate Mom

Board minutes with RiFs and fees. Board president said this morning all stand. http://www.perkinsschools.org/Do...

Transplant1

They have all across the state. This is not the first district to do this. They have done this all over the state. And if there are hidden funds, they wont come out until after the November election. That will be when we will see where the money will come out of

fifteenthgreen

Trust me. Programs and teachers will be coming back.

Good 2 B Me

They always do in other districts. We shall see! Vote of No Confidence in BOE and Gunner!

the unsilent majority's picture
the unsilent ma...

Giving these people more money to mismange would be an act of grodd public negligence

Transplant1

I still find it hard to believe that over half of the voters don't care one way or the other. And what if they don't budge. what if people dont participate in sports, band, drama, academic challenge? What if people do move and the schools do take a turn for the south. I just saw two new homes for sale by owner be put out. What then. Trust me what?

vigilante

So I got to pay for the basic required classes..i can see extra class.. But required classes?

Good 2 B Me

By reading your posts, it sounds like you should be in classes learning instead of playing sports.

Transplant1

What do you mean pay? By taxes. Well read my previous post. If no one takes on the State of Ohio, and you all whine and cry to each other then yes. You will pay by taxes. If you all are true Perkins fans, alum, neighbors, etc. round up the troops and head south. And for you who say take it up with the district reps, take it above them. Get a group and go to the state. It is not closed door. You have a right to present your claim in a professional manner. There is a chain of command, believe me I know it, use it.

Good 2 B Me

These people might have learned that if they spent time learning instead of worrying about pay-for-play.

Thatgirl123

Okay now, I go on my Facebook and all I see is students posting of all this. Oh so your saying I have to pay over 2,000 for all my sports, I'm getting stuff taken away, saying they are suffering? This just shows how selfish people can be. Think of the poor places of America, and number one these students are not even paying for this extra tax money, plus some of these people can't even afford this extra money.

fifteenthgreen

A feeling of entitlement!

Good 2 B Me

Who was the reporter that took this photo and was asking questions at the Chapel? I saw her out there, but do not know who she was.

VOTENO

VOTE NO IN NOVEMBER! AGAIN!
