Cedar Point’s Shoot the Rapids water ride remained closed Saturday following a serious boat malfunction Friday that injured all seven of its riders.

Park officials blocked off the ride’s nearby observation areas from visitors using metal barriers, yellow chains and trash cans to keep foot traffic moving past it through the Frontier Trail. At least one man was spotted inspecting the ride on its first lift hill in the afternoon.

As groups of guests walked by Shoot the Rapids in Saturday’s sweltering heat, many pointed or took a moment to carefully observe the out-of-order ride from afar.

None, however, seemed deterred from the park’s attractions because of the incident.

“We come here every year and we’ve never heard of anything like this,” said Barb Bischoff, of Wooster, who was visiting the park with family and friends. “It didn’t stop us from coming and riding rides all day today.”

Shoot the Rapids malfunctioned at about 6:40 p.m. Friday, sending a boat backward down its lift hill and overturning into waist-deep water below, trapping some individuals inside, witnesses said. Several park visitors jumped into the ride area to rescue people from the capsized boat until Cedar Point staff arrived.

Six people aboard the ride were treated and released by Cedar Point paramedics, while one was taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center, according to a statement park officials released shortly after the incident. The person has since been released from the hospital.

The ride will remain closed until park officials and state inspectors finish reviewing it, according to the statement.

Bryan Edwards, Cedar Point spokesman, did not return a call Saturday evening seeking a comment about the ride’s status.

This ride has been a disaster since the first day it was built. They just need to tear it down and build something else.
