There was a rental car on its side, but no driver around.

This was the mystery confronting Erie County deputies Sunday morning when they arrived at the Maples Motel on Cleveland Road in Huron.

Who was the driver? The guy in the blue-and-white swim trunks, hiding in the nearby woods.

Huron fire Chief Steve Osterling spotted Dale Nederveld, 34, of Jenison, Mich., who was soon charged with operating a vehicle under the influence, failure to control and obstructing official business. Deputies said Nederveld was uncooperative during questioning and he smelled of alcohol.

A crash report said Nederveld’s rented 2013 Kia Optima was headed north on West Perkins Avenue  but it didn’t halt for the stop sign on U.S. 6. It then cut across the road and struck a ditch, where it went airborne before landing on its side.
