Study: Lake Erie home to dirty beaches

Check the water ratings before you go swimming this summer

An environmental group says Lake Erie beaches in Ohio were the worst in the national last year for water quality.

The annual report from the Natural Resources Defense Council on coastal beaches ranked Ohio last based on how many times E. coli
bacteria posed a health threat to swimmers at Lake Erie’s
61 public beaches.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that in 2012, E. coli was detected in 21 percent of beach water tests. That put Ohio last. Wisconsin ranked 29th with a 14-percent rate.

The percentage of 2012 tests that found unhealthy bacteria was down only slightly, from the 22 percent in 2011.

Tessie Pollock, spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Health, said sewage overflows, failing home septic systems and feces from geese and gulls contribute to bacteria contamination.

Sex certainly sells and those girls ain't hidin' much. :)

Sitting In The ...

I have no problem with that picture I say use it more often :)

Blues

The faces do look Photoshopped, tho. Not natural.

mrmorency

is it just me or does it look like their heads don't line up with their bodies?

Blues

It's not just you, mrmorency. the heads are way too big and out of place with the girls bodies. Clearly a messed up Photoshop job.

PS

I was thinking the same thing. It took me a minute to figure out which head went with which body.

Blues

This is more than likely a ploy to see what males look at first when they see a girl scantily clad. Freakin' duh....

The Big Dog's back

It's a shame really that our beaches are in such horrible shape. Heaven forbid if we ask the Corporations and the wealthy to pay any state taxes to help clean up the beaches.

JudgeMeNot

The corporations and the wealthy are not to blame. Your inept leader is to blame.

Obama's EPA (Lisa Jackson,Gina McCarthy) has dropped new regulatory proposals for factory farm waste, including the requirement that factory farms have a national pollution discharge permit, a critical component in controlling the 500 million to 1 billion tons of manure produced on these farms. Farm run-off has been responsible for the return of historic algal blooms in western Lake Erie.

OBAMA KOOL AID

Relax -- Drink Up -- No Worries

Huron_1969

Farmers are only part of the problem. Failing sewage treatment plants, dredging as the lake water levels continue to fall (particularly the Maumee River) and 100+ year old sewer lines that dump raw sewage from residential areas directly into the lake (Berlin Heights is a good example) are a significant contributor. The last 20 years of pollution combined with low water levels is the reason our lake is in danger

I am not a fan of Obama, but blaming him or his administration for something they did not cause distracts people from focusing on the real problem

The Big Dog's back

I agree.

JudgeMeNot

Blaming them for failing to do anything is good enough.

mikeylikesit

it seems the money our government is using to fund terrorists could be used to clean up a few beaches..

Huron_1969

When you suggest wealthy corporations pay for stuff, why is it you never call out entertainers or professional athletes ?

The Big Dog's back

Them too.

The Big Dog's back

Since the haves in this country don't want to pay the have nots a decent wage, let them cover the costs of cleaning up our environment.

JudgeMeNot

Erie Countian

That IS one weird photo, like they photoshopped 2 bigger heads on someone else's bodies. But I'm more worried about our shallow lake and all the problems it has from farm runoff, sewage and birds. Hope something will be done to help wherever it can be. It's too bad this is happening, but yet I remember when Lake Erie was a horrible shade of olive green and so murky that you couldn't even see your hand an inch under water! Lots has been done in 40 years, but hopefully more can be done to protect our waters.

Blues

I'll be honest. I'm a male. My eyes first went to the girl's lower section on the left. Secondly to the girl's backside on the right. I'm a male and not dead, yet. Then I looked at the faces/heads and was like, WTF?

Blues

Yeah, pretend like the story meant more than the picture.

Erie Countian

Ha! To me the story IS more important than the picture, since I'm a heterosexual woman. (I do think the photo looks weird, but that is extent of my interest in it.)

Blues

Being a heterosexual woman EC, I can't imagine you looking at smut magazines made for men, either. The thing is, when some guys were caught with them awhile back, they used to say they had them more for the articles in print instead of the pictures. :) Now they don't care and admit it. What's the point of lying?

The Bizness

The photo is not photo shopped...The two girls are leaning in and are cheek cheek with one another, which is tilting their heads back at what appears to be a 60-70 degree angle, making it appear that their heads are almost a continuation of the other girls body.

That being said it does look strange.

Blues

I call BS.

I have a relative in the graphics design industry. While this photo may/not be the case here that kind of chop-up is done on a very frequent basis especially on fashion shoots for swimsuits/underwear. The professional term they use for these compositions that are ordered and printed in catalogs are "frankensteins". Haha. For people who look at those "impossible" beauties and wish to be like them or think that is normal, I will be the first to assure you it isn't biologically possible.

Enjoy who you are, that's what counts. Oh, and while I have my fashion advice soap box pulled up: stop taking duckbilled selfies in the bathroom, that's so last decade.

Tool Box

I just noticed that they had heads!

deertracker

Weird!!!!!!!!!

Cowboy

That is most definitely the worse photoshop job ever!

shucks

How's the water at Lion's park?

eriemom

Let's start with getting the House to allow a vote for the EPA administrator. Then maybe instead of working to abolish the EPA, fund it, so that we can get this mess cleaned up.

People complain about government size, cost, and bureaucracy until we can't drink the water any more. Then what?

Huron_1969

How many government agencies do we need to protect the environment? There's the EPA, Dept of Natural Resources, Dept of Agriculture, and many others. Then you take into account some are federal while others are run by the state. They overlap, point fingers, launch studies that result in zip, and countless other ways of wasting time and money. We're already paying for all these services and are getting crappy results. Giving the EPA more money wouldn't improve anything

Darwin's choice

+1

The Big Dog's back

The agencies in the state are very political and they shouldn't be. On the Federal level the EPA and the like have been castrated.

JudgeMeNot

The authority granted to the EPA has exploded under the Obama administration. So why are they doing nothing about the lakes? Thats right, all their time end effort is focused on the coal industry.

Really are you ...

Give our Lake Erie E coli bacteria tainted water to the Chinese, or send it to Mexico. They are taking everything else.

The photo may be taken at a strange angle but when blowing it up so each pixel is about 0.25 inches across on my monitor it appears that they interlace as original. If they were Photoshopped then it was a real good job putting it together. The adjoining pixels have mixed color density and sharpness in the transition as well, something hard and time consuming to do manually.

On another note, what is wrong with these girls dress? Girls have been wearing bikinis since the Bikini Island nuclear blast tests. For some strange reason men’s shorts have gained about a half a foot in length over the same period? I consider them knickers when they come over the knee more than a few inches. Very strange, I just have mine tailored to come above the knee, too uncomfortable when shorts hang up on ones knee during activity.

The Bizness

Nice to see some real technology info shared on here. Thanks!

Oh and yeah, focus on the point of the article. We all are still dumping to much stuff into our lake.

Happy 4th of July everyone!
America!

Blues

A bachelor's degree graphics artist said that the pic was manipulated. A 1/4 inch in pixelation isn't anything. One can fade the colors and light direction in. It wasn't done in that pic. The heads are too big.

Also,I have no problem with the bikinis, either. I'm not dead. I also agree on the mens shorts. I wear them at least just above the knees. I won't cut them as short as happy joy gay guy on an older article with the pockets hanging out, though. We have to have some decorum.

Yes, but why would you for this picture?

(The heads are too big.)

Typical teenagers :)
