A woman was killed Thursday when the van she was driving slammed into a tree off Second Street .

A pet dog in the vehicle also was killed.

Police said the woman was westbound traveling at a high rate of speed when she lost control of the vehicle near Fulton Street. Her identity is being withheld until family is notified, police said.

The Ohio State Patrol, the Port Clinton police and fire departments and the Ottawa County sheriff's office responded to the scene.

I agree that this is news, and I don't have any objection to the photo (which provides no real identifiers). The speculation, though, is unfortunate at best.

What I WOULD like to see in cases like this is ongoing updates to the existing story. Updates keep the entire thread, both comments and reporting, in one place so people don't get the wrong impression with initial reports and comment there before they get an entirely different impression with updated stories that are posted separately.

How about it, Register? We've seen you update some stories in the past. Why not make it S.O.P., especially with stories like this when so little is known with certainty at the outset?

Meanwhile, if, and ONLY if, this woman was speeding irresponsibly, then I'm only sorry the dog died and her family is suffering. But it sounds from some of the comments like the opposite is the case, which makes the story an entirely different one. I think all of us, most especially the woman's family, deserve the WHOLE story as soon as it's available, don't you, Register?
