LETTER: Disabilities Board missed its mission

The Sunday cartoon brought me

The Sunday cartoon brought me to tears. How true, that could be my son, your neighbor, your friend in that truck!

I serve now, and have served in the past, on many boards including the Arc of Erie County board, and know that too often we trust and believe the person we hired to be the agency leader. I have learned what a mistake it is when we do not question with boldness and stand up for our values and the reasons why we volunteered for a board. A board member has to do thier homework, they have to understand the structure of the agency and how to keep that structure working for the good of the agency.

It appears that the board forgot that the Superintendent works for them, and that the structure was always there for them to step up and say enough. The board is there to provide a staff that does its job, provide services for people with disabilities and lead the way to opportunity to grow the Erie County Developmental Disabilities agency.

That opportunity is now here. We'll see how we have learned from mistakes made and look for the voices who will heal the wounds. We lost sight of the reason we have an Erie County DD agency, the citizens of Erie County who have developmental disabilities and the families who work very hard to raise thier children into the main stream community. We have nowhere to go but up!
