Second bomb suspect captured alive

Boston police: 'Suspect in custody'

A 19-year-old college student wanted in the Boston Marathon bombings was taken into custody Friday evening after a manhunt that left the city virtually paralyzed and his older brother and accomplice dead.

Police announced via Twitter that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was in custody. They later wrote, "CAPTURED!!! The hunt is over. The search is done. The terror is over. And justice has won. Suspect in custody."

Tsarnaev's brother, 26-year-old Tamerlan, was killed Friday in a furious attempt to escape police.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev had been holed up in a boat in a Watertown neighborhood. The crowd gathered near the scene let out a cheer when spectators saw officers clapping.

"Everyone wants him alive," said Kathleen Paolillo, a 27-year-old teacher who lives in Watertown.

Boston Mayor Tom Menino tweeted "We got him," along with a photo of the police commissioner speaking to him.

During a long night of violence Thursday into Friday, the brothers killed an MIT police officer, severely wounded another lawman and hurled explosives at police in a car chase and gun battle, authorities said.

The suspects were identified by law enforcement officials and family members as Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, ethnic Chechen brothers who had lived in Dagestan, which neighbors Chechnya in southern Russia. They had been in the U.S. for about a decade, an uncle said, and were believed to be living in Cambridge, Mass.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, a 26-year-old who had been known to the FBI as Suspect No. 1 and was seen in surveillance footage of the marathon in a black baseball cap, was killed overnight, officials said. His younger brother, who had been dubbed Suspect No. 2 and was seen wearing a white, backward baseball cap in the images from Monday's deadly bombing — escaped and was on the run.

Their uncle in Maryland, Ruslan Tsarni, pleaded on live television: "Dzhokhar, if you are alive, turn yourself in and ask for forgiveness."

Authorities in Boston suspended all mass transit and warned close to 1 million people in the entire city and some of its suburbs to stay indoors as the hunt for Suspect No. 2 went on. Businesses were asked not to open. People waiting at bus and subway stops were told to go home. The Red Sox and Bruins postponed their games.

From Watertown to Cambridge, police SWAT teams, sharpshooters and FBI agents surrounded various buildings as police helicopters buzzed overhead and armored vehicles rumbled through the streets. Authorities also searched trains.

"We believe this man to be a terrorist," said Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis. "We believe this to be a man who's come here to kill people."

The bombings on Monday killed three people and wounded more than 180 others, tearing off limbs in a spray of shrapnel and instantly raising the specter of another terrorist attack on U.S. soil.

Chechnya was the scene of two wars between Russian forces and separatists since 1994, in which tens of thousands were killed in heavy Russian bombing. That spawned an Islamic insurgency that has carried out deadly bombings in Russia and the region, although not in the West.

Investigators in the Boston case have shed no light on the motive for the bombing and have said it is unclear whether it was the work of domestic or international terrorists or someone else entirely with an unknown agenda.

The endgame — at least for Suspect No. 1 — came just hours after the FBI released photos and video of the two young men at the marathon's finish line and appealed to the public for help in identifying and capturing them.

State Police spokesman Dave Procopio said police realized they were dealing with the bombing suspects based on what the two men told a carjacking victim during their getaway attempt overnight.

I guess you'll have to quit your pissing and moaning and wait another four years! LOL! Hee hee! Ha ha! Great comedy! A long term sore loser is talking about the President. What's wrong you don't have money for cigarettes? Can't take a vacation? Good.

Look, when a man walks up and says he's going to do something, he should at least do a little. I'd have been happy if he could have made a small amount of improvement. Ohio, I'll give you the same challenge I've given others. Name 3 things Obama said that he would do that he actually completed in totality. Because really, he turned out to be a bold faced liar. First term spouting off about not going after guns, and second term his only ambition is to ban guns. Hmmm... sounds like trustworthy guy to me. At least bush's ineptitude made us laugh.

^^White guilt, anyone?

arnmcrmn

Obama has had just as many slip ups. Without his TelePrompTer, he is simply LOST. Remember, he was going to visit all 52 states....or was it 51?

shucks

Had as many slip ups as Bush?

The Boston bombers were bitter people! The Ricin letter sender was a bitter perso, the Arizona shooter was a better person that led to his mental demise. That mentality is spewing out of many minds on this site! It makes me believe something of this magnitude will happen in Sandusky by someone who hates their government! God bless America!

goofus

The government is not the source of discontent

OH-IO, I am really trying not to sink to your intellectual level (whether it is all you have or merely all you are displaying, I know not), but you are really pushing it.

YOU are bitter against your fellow Americans. So bitter, that you got up at 6am to incite hatred and prejudice against them.
Judging by the demands which you make of your fellow Americans (which are readily gleaned from your previous comments on this article), you seem to favor a dictatorial form of government. That is about as anti-American as it gets.

Considering the fact that our President is one of the most safely guarded people on the planet, and considering the fact that people like you (as emotionally unstable as you seem to be) are among us in our very own community, who should we be more concerned about?
The President is safe, we can be fairly sure.

People who disagree with the President are not going to go out and cause problems for the country. They are too busy trying to prove that the country is doing well enough that it doesn't need government intrusion in our lives. If they became a terrorist, they would be shooting their own cause in the foot.
In short, why would they want to prove their ideological opponents' positions if they are trying to disprove them?

Now, I do not wish to alienate myself from our friends across the aisle here.
I am not saying Obama supporters are "likely" to become terrorists. I am just stating the obvious fact that, IF someone was gonna do something rash, people who want to "change" America, who want to "transform" it, would be the "more likely" people to do something irrational.

I would like this conversation to end here. I really hope that someone on the Left could join me in explaining to OH-IO that he/she is doing nothing but hurting the Left's cause, rather than helping it.

OH-IO

Please!…! The American people with the current administration. This is America and we vote around here. Your sore loser. You're only speaking for a certain discontent sector of America. God bless America! Indivisible with liberty and justice for all.

Why, then, are his overall approval ratings so abysmal? They continue to hover around 50%.

And it's not just in America. His approval rating is going nowhere but down all around the world.

Both brothers had YouTube channels in the United States and in Russia. Emerson's group reviewed about half of the 22 videos posted on the U.S. channel. The videos were viewed by a small number of people. One video received 5,000 views, another just 1,000 views.
Based on the content of the videos, which feature Bin Laden, calls to kill Americans, Jews, Christians and exhortations to establish a world-wide caliphate, it is clear that these message are not directed just at Chechens. "They are directed primarily against all non-Muslims and are very similar to the Al Qaeda videos we've seen in years past."
The two brothers clearly want "to express a message that they totally sympathize with the jihadist cause. These were jihadists, they were not just Chechen separatists."

IMO:

* Adds to the argument for the use of drones over the U.S. for increased surveillance.

* Will more-than-likely impact discussions in DC regarding immigration reform.

* Increased sales of firearms in MA and elsewhere.

Aside:

Last week, the U.S. “droned” 5 “suspected militants” in Yemen.

With the Obama Admin., just being “suspect” gets ya killed.

Never mind the "collateral damage" of innocent men, women and children, which more than likely in response tends to create more "suspected militants."

RE: arnmcrmn

I fail to see where you are coming from with your comment that "Obama didn't do anything but talk, like usual."

What did you want the President of the United States to do, anyway? Strap on a gun and join in the manhunt or what?

arnmcrmn

I don't expect him to do such a thing, just like I wouldn't expect the liberal media to hail Obama as the savior of Boston.....but I guess I was expecting to much. The only credit Obama gets for this is being the President during yet another terrorist attack on his watch on US soil. Thats it.

God Bless Boston and their local law enforcement for all the great work they did to bring this guy in before he caused more deaths.

LOL! 2 Thumbs way up!

In an earlier post someone suggested that Obama does quote scripture and at times and my wife does past sayings around the house at times and one she had taped to the vanity mirror said " Your actions speak so loud that I cannot hear what you are saying "

Many of these actions are literally unprecedented – this is the first time they have happened in four centuries of American history. The hostility of President Obama toward Biblical faith and values is without equal from any previous American president

4. Acts of preferentialism for Islam:
May 2009 – While Obama does not host any National Day of Prayer event at the White House, he does host White House Iftar dinners in honor of Ramadan. 44

April 2010 – Christian leader Franklin Graham is disinvited from the Pentagon’s National Day of Prayer Event because of complaints from the Muslim community. 45

April 2010 – The Obama administration requires rewriting of government documents and a change in administration vocabulary to remove terms that are deemed offensive to Muslims, including jihad, jihadists, terrorists, radical Islamic, etc. 46

August 2010 – Obama speaks with great praise of Islam and condescendingly of Christianity. 47

August 2010 – Obama went to great lengths to speak … — « Details »

3. Acts of hostility toward Biblical values:
January 2009 – Obama lifts restrictions on U.S. government funding for groups that provide abortion services or counseling abroad, forcing taxpayers to fund pro-abortion groups that either promote or perform abortions in other nations. 26

January 2009 – President Obama’s nominee for deputy secretary of state asserts that American taxpayers are required to pay for abortions and that limits on abortion funding are unconstitutional. 27

March 2009 – The Obama administration shut out pro-life groups from attending a White House-sponsored health care summit. 28

March 2009 – Obama orders taxpayer funding of embryonic stem cell research. 29

March 2009 – Obama gave $50 million for the UNFPA, …

2. Acts of hostility from the Obama-led military toward people of Biblical faith:
June 2011 – The Department of Veterans Affairs forbids references to God and Jesus during burial ceremonies at Houston National Cemetery. 17

August 2011 – The Air Force stops teaching the Just War theory to officers in California because the course is taught by chaplains and is based on a philosophy introduced by St. Augustine in the third century AD – a theory long taught by civilized nations across the world (except America). 18

September 2011 – Air Force Chief of Staff prohibits commanders from notifying airmen of programs and services available to them from chaplains. 19

September 2011 – The Army issues guidelines for Walter Reed Medical Center … —
Many of these actions are literally unprecedented – this is the first time they have happened in four centuries of American history. The hostility of President Obama toward Biblical faith and values is without equal from any previous American president.

1. Acts of hostility toward people of Biblical faith:
April 2008 – Obama speaks disrespectfully of Christians, saying they “cling to guns or religion” and have an “antipathy to people who aren't like them.” 1

February 2009 – Obama announces plans to revoke conscience protection for health workers who refuse to participate in medical activities that go against their beliefs, and fully implements the plan in February 2011. 2

April 2009 – When speaking at Georgetown University, Obama orders that a monogram symbolizing Jesus' name be covered when he is making his speech. 3

May 2009 – Obama declines to host services for the National Prayer Day (a day established by federal law) at the White House. 4

Any supposed war Obama has against Christianity pales in comparison to the war conservatives have waged against him. Their hatred is duly noted here, to be sure. Republicans such as Anthras can always be counted upon to list anecdotal examples that supposedly back up their viewpoint, as Anthras did here. A quick read thru his list, and it's clear that his supposed examples of Obama being anti-Christian are only viewed that way by people on the extreme Right. To me, several on the list are examples of Obama showing Christian values in a far better way than those who oppose him.

The reality, of course, is that anyone could also put together a list of dozens of examples in which Obama is pro-Christian. That, of course, would be a waste of time, since those who don't like Obama aren't going to change their minds no matter what.

I wonder if Anthras knows that Thomas Jefferson did a rewrite of the Bible, by crossing out all references to Jesus Christ and God? Many of our founding fathers were either agnostics or atheists, so even if what Anthras says about Obama is true (which it is most decidedly not), it certainly isn't unprecedented. Someone should also tell the history-challenged Anthras that America is only 237 years old, so there really isn't "four centuries of American history" as he mentioned.

The constant wringing of hands and use of the word 'unprececedented' by many Republicans these days is just silly, considering some of the things that happened during the Bush years...

A once upon a time "teacher" huh?

You're obviously wholly unfamiliar with the "Jefferson Bible."

"Jefferson's condensed composition is especially notable for its exclusion of all miracles by Jesus and most mentions of the supernatural, including sections of the four gospels which contain the Resurrection and most other miracles, and passages indicating Jesus was divine."

Actually most were Deists, not atheists or agnostics. In their time, Christians tried to say they were atheists, however it was found to be untrue. You see, Deists do believe in God so they cannot be atheists. You really should brush up on your history.
