In White House, Newtown mom pleads for gun control

Mother fills in for President Obama during weekly radio address.
Associated Press
Apr 14, 2013

The mother of a 6-year-old boy killed in the Connecticut school shooting used the opportunity to fill in for President Barack Obama during the weekly radio and Internet address to make a personal plea from the White House for action to combat gun violence.

"Thousands of other families across the United States are also drowning in our grief," said Francine Wheeler, choking back tears in the address broadcast Saturday. "Please help us do something before our tragedy becomes your tragedy."

Ben Wheeler was among the 20 first-graders and six adults killed in the Dec. 14 attack at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

Francine Wheeler was the first person to deliver the address other than Obama or Vice President Joe Biden since the two took office in 2009.

Her husband, David Wheeler, sat silently next to her as she made the recording in the White House Library. Both wore the small green pins that have become a symbol of the shooting.

Obama asked Wheeler to deliver this week's address, which was taped Friday. The White House said Wheeler and her husband wrote the remarks.

"Sometimes, I close my eyes and all I can remember is that awful day waiting at the Sandy Hook Volunteer Firehouse for the boy who would never come home — the same firehouse that was home to Ben's Tiger Scout Den 6," Francine Wheeler said. "But other times, I feel Ben's presence filling me with courage for what I have to do, for him and all the others taken from us so violently and too soon."

Some of the Sandy Hook families, with Obama's blessing, have launched a stepped-up effort to push a gun control bill through Congress.

Obama traveled Monday to Hartford, Conn., about an hour's drive from Newtown, to make his case for action. On the return trip to Washington, he brought back 12 of the victims' family members, who have been meeting with senators.

The Senate is considering a Democratic bill backed by Obama that would expand background checks, strengthen laws against illegal gun trafficking and slightly increase school security aid. The bill passed its first hurdle on Thursday, and senators will vote on amendments to the legislation in the coming week.

Its fate in the Republican-controlled House is uncertain.

Shortly after the vote Thursday, White House spokesman Jay Carney said the voices of the Newtown families may have been the decisive factor.

In the Republicans' weekly address, freshman Rep. Jackie Walorski of Indiana criticized the tax increases Obama proposed in the $3.8 trillion budget blueprint he unveiled Wednesday, calling it "a blank check for more spending and more debt."

Although she acknowledged that Obama's budget "offers signs of common ground" in the form of entitlement reforms the GOP has previously requested, she said it's wrongheaded for Obama to insist he'll only agree to those reforms if Congress also agrees to higher taxes.

Why is my tax dollar being used to transport these parents to D.C. on Air Force One? Is Obama going to offer the same opportunity to those who oppose his views? Like his administration has said, Never let a good crisis go to waste!

Maybe they will receive a 1099 for their 2013 taxes!

No they won't pay for opposing views to fly out there. In fact a couple of local media outlets near Newtown surveyed both families that lost children in the incident and survivors families and found that the vast majority don't support anymore gun control laws. In fact, I heard it reported on CNN that even most of the families that lost children in the tragedy don't want anymore laws and that the 8 or so families that the keep touting are the only ones who have been convinced that more gun control is the way to go. They are nothing more than pawns in the liberals little game. I can't wait for the senate to vote and send it to the house. At that time, it's game over, and finally back to the business that is really important to this country, instead of the Dems using this as a distraction.

Pterocarya frax...

Thank goodness Republicans never resort to distractions, and concentrate on important issues like restricting birth control, abortion, relations with animals and furniture, Benghazi.

Concerned about your tax dollars being used for these families to be present in Wash.? How about your tax dollars being used to shut down our community schools this past Weds. to teach school administrators and teachers on recognizing the different sounds of gunfire and the protocol to try and save as many as possible in the event of an unnecessary slaughter of our children? You are b****ing about Pres. Obama but you have failed to see the bigger picture- how did we get to this point in our country? I get chills just thinking of it,of how terrified any child or adult feels when tragedies like these massacres happen! Of receiving the phone call that my child is dead and I will never hear her voice again-how dare you or anyone try to minimize the horror of what is happening in this nation?! It makes me sick!

Maboom2Paul

Keep your tax dollars, I'll pay for it! These people lost small children. Imagine sending your kindergartener to school and have him never return home. Leave those families alone, haven't they suffered enough?!

My condolences to Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler-please don't ever give up fighting! It's a sad testament to our country that we still haven't learned our lesson, that we're ok with innocents dying, that we're ok with providing assault weapons being bought and taken across the Border to kill thousands others by the drug cartels, that we're ok with any of this, I have never had a problem with owners having pistols or shotguns or rifles but why do so many feel the need to own assault weapons? How many of you mourn each and every year the death of your child who was taken from your arms because of the stupid actions of others? How many of you who support the NRA ever saw a whole family(mom,Dad, kids, Grandma and Grandpa) lined up on a wall and slaughtered like dogs then thrown into a ditch and left to rot? And how many of you have tried to console a grieving family walking to the store to purchase a gallon of milk on a beautiful sunny day that witnessed their 5 year old daughter shot and killed by gangbangers in a driveby? Where do you think these thugs get their weapons? Maybe home burglaries that they stole the weapons from law abiding citizens such as yourselves who don't want to give up their guns until they're pried from their cold dead fingers> Again, what is the reasoning behind the ownership of assault weapons? Because you are afraid the government will come knocking at your door someday and haul you and your family away> Do you really think in your paranoid and delusional mind what little you stockpile will make a difference? Or is it for protection of your home and family? A good ole .44,.45.380 or 9mil. will suffice in that scenario, It's not like ya'll living here in this area are encountering Bloods or Crips or MS13 around here! Personally, a 380 would be my weapon of choice to put one of them down, just saying.

KnuckleDragger

What they are defining as assault weapons are responsible for less than 1% of homicides, and of that 1%, the vast majority are due to gang violence. So no what they are doing will do nothing. According to our own government research, the last assault weapons ban did nothing to drop the homicide rate. As far as not having major gangs close by, you have your head in the sand. The likes of the Bloods, Crips, and MS13 are alive and well as close a the city of Lorain. Just call their PD and ask, like I did. You are nothing but a useful idiot for the dems. How about actually doing research instead of going strictly by your feelings? Following feelings has only lead to millions of broken hearts.

Simple Enough II

You are funny. When did that term "assault weapon" originate? Gangnangers can't afford a good weapon so get off your uninformed high horse.

happyfeet64

Uninformed? I think not. I am aware of the gangs that are in Lorain, Cleveland and the other communities around here. I don't need to pick up the phone to question they're PD's to confirm that.I have lived in their neighborhoods and seen the results of their presence. My community is Norwalk and last I saw, they have not taken a foothold here. As for my head in the sand, I am more connected to my community than you can ever imagine. I am very much against ANY weapon that has the capacity to fire more than 10 rounds- it's not necessary. I have many experiences in my life and many regrets that have shaped my view of what's right and wrong. And if I could undo the damage that I helped create ,I would. You see my friend- I was someone who was present in El Salavador in the 80's during the war and I wasn't providing blankets and medicine. So don't tell me I'm naive or sheltered or uninformed- you have no idea of my life or my experiences.

Tell me how background checks would have prevented the Sandy Hook rampage? So sad that Obama uses this terrible tragedy to play on the emotions of Americans. Let's put our energies together to understand how mental health and the violence in movies influence the young minds that are causing these tragedies.

The Big Dog's back

Maybe it would weed out the "real" criminals.

Darwin's choice

Well, blind dog, their in the white house....!

KnuckleDragger

Really? You didn't answer the question.

jas

Any kind of censorship is a bigger threat to our liberty than the strictest gun control. A big dog will protect your home better than any stockpile of weapons because they're "on duty" even when you're not home which is when most burglaries occur. All your weapons are useless if you're not there to use them. Your stockpile of weapons also makes you a target for burglars since guns are one of the items most often stolen when homes are entered by burglars. Burglaries aren't random. They know which homes to target and ones with lots of guns are at the top of the list.

So keep deluding yourself by thinking more guns will protect you from burglars who usually break in when you're not home and the government who has way more fire power than you could ever buy if they choose to use it against you. As for me, I'm not wasting my money on a false sense of security by buying a bunch of guns. That's just being stupid.

goofus

So that's why the SR published the CCW's name and address, so the criminals know what houses to break into.

goofus

You must know that the EPA gave information about farmers and ranchers, so let's fill out the new required forms so the ATF can sell the lists to criminals.

KnuckleDragger

Bahahaha, tell that to my cousin whose big dog (German Shephard) was the first thing that was shot when a group of home invaders broke down his door. You go ahead and rely on your big dog, I'll keep my guns. I could care less about the burglar who breaks into my house when I'm not there. I don't own anything that can't be replaced by insurance. If they want my guns, good luck, I hope they have a bunch of guys to carry a 900lb gun safe that is bolted to the floor. The gun is for when they show up and myself and family are here. I'm not gonna put my life in the hands of dog.
One more question, how many men and women in the armed forces do you think will actually take up arms against their fellow citizens, hmm?

Mime Bloggling's picture

Until we figure out how to keep the guns out of the hands of the bad guys (you know the real criminals) and the mentally ill no legislation is going to make sense. It only becomes an assault on the 2nd Amendment Rights of law-abiding people.

Until Obama addresses the violent video game industry (a major source of his campaign funding) that program the minds of the young and mentally ill who commit such atrocities it's all window dressing.

Until Obama cares enough for the least among us, viable babies within the womb and those born alive after failed abortions then maybe this land can begin to right itself and heal. If you don't know what I'm talking about Google "Gosnell" and ask yourself why the Sandusky Register hasn't covered this national tragedy. Come on Matt..you can do better.

@ Mime Bloggling "Until we figure out how to keep the guns out of the hands of the bad guys (you know the real criminals) and the mentally ill no legislation is going to make sense. It only becomes an assault on the 2nd Amendment Rights of law-abiding people."

That would start with responsible gun ownership placed fully on the gun owners shoulders. You keep your guns and ammo secure by proper secure storage and utilize any number of disabling devices that are available or you share in the penalty of the crime with the perpetrator. You make your selection of weapon based on actual need for personal protection and or hunting and not on the idea of demonstrated fire power and rapid fire capabilities. I would agree with the statements that guns don't kill but irresponsible gun owners and bad people do.

KnuckleDragger

So put them in a position where they are useless in a self-defense situation? You are insane. My guns are locked up but in a safe where I can get to them quickly if I need them. If you think i'm gonna put trigger locks and additional devices on them in order to make them completely useless when I need them, forget about it. Besides, none of this is gonna make it through congress to the Presidents hands so you are wasting your time. Even if it did, once Obama is gone, it will likely be repealed.

looking around

@ KnucleDragger in my home if I feel the need for a gun at the ready I keep one handy. When I leave I place it back in secure storage with a trigger lock installed and un-loaded. I could also take it with me depending on where my travels may take me as I am the holder of a CCW, but I rarely see the need for carrying, I got the permit to allow me the ability of crossing state lines legally as the permit I have is recognized in many states. If I am absent from my home for a longer duration I entrust the storage of my collection to another family member who is as responsible as I.

Simple Enough II

In my home should suffice. You steal a gun you get a needle problem solved.

reporter54

She should be lobbying for more help for the mentally ill. That's what caused the shooting at Newtown.

Simple Enough II

I don't think it is so much the mentally ill as the drugs we are giving folks.

deertracker

Agreed! Legal drugs at that!

Now The Rest of...

Cheap political trick prostituting these victims for his own political gain. The problem is mental illness, but who will determine who is and who isn't, what will the standard be, will it be a government bureaucrat? Even in the medical community different diagnosis will exist for the same person. Its not the the guns, its the criminals and the mentally ill.

Do we outlaw cars because drunk drivers misuse them? More people are victims of drunk drivers every year than from gun violence. When was MADD given the weekly address from the messiah?

deertracker

DUI laws have changed! There is no need to outlaw anything. Was the drunk driver drunk or mentally ill? Most gun violence is not caused by anyone that is mentally ill. Just criminals . It is not a cheap political trick to offer comfort to a grieving parent. Some, like you, simply have a problem with this President regardless of what he does.

KnuckleDragger

The fact is that we are using mass shooting victims as the reason we need these laws. Numerous studies have shown that the majority of mass shooters in fact had mental illness. Oh and by the way, quit insinuating that just because someone disagrees with your infallible President that they are a racist. Quit thinking that everyone in America should share your "white guilt." I never owned a slave, and none of my ancestors ever owned a slave or were part of the slave trade. I am completely free of the guilt that you possess.

Mrjsiah1

Once again knucklehead knows it all. You didnt own slave but you share the same thought as the people in all white who wants to bring it back. Why dont you bring some true facts instead of rush or false news point of view.

ladydye_5

Why is he only "comforting" Sandy Hook? What about those shot in Colorado? What about those from the college shootings? What about the teen that shot and killed his family (Arizona I think). What about Columbine survivors/parents? There are (sadly) hundreds of parents that have lost children to violence, gun, domestic, accidental, take your pick.....BUT the president CHOOSES to use the ones he wants. And like others have said all the "new" gun control they are pushing, NONE of it, not one part would have stopped or prevented Sandy Hook.

Now The Rest of...

DUI laws have changed, and we still kill record number of people every year by drunk drivers, changing a law does not solve a problem. Mass killers are either criminals or mentally ill and will not, or mentally unable to obey a law.

In 1775 around 50% of the people still supported England and only 2-3% percent actually fought for our freedom. That means over 95% laid back, like today, and benefitted from the blood of the few brave men who won our freedom. It's little wonder that those families of the 95% are still supporting England. You had your chances to fight, several times and continue to hide and depend on the bravery of a few.
Thousands of felons have tried to buy guns legally and were turned down because of back-ground checks. Very few were ever charged and brought to court. If the government has failed to prosecute these thousands of individuals what would ever make you think they care about us?
If you want to injure a person there are many, many choices. Having been in combat, I'll explain. An assault weapon isn't necessarily an offensive weapon. You can defend yourself with a 9 mm or even a crossbow against one or two people or assault or rob a person with a pistol. Assault weapons are fire power that gives you more of a fighting chance against many people. This is why assault weaons and ammunition sales have sky-rocketed. People don't fear their neighbors, they fear our government.
Yes, as a parent my heart goes out to the people at Sandy Hook who never would have imagined this could have happened to them. Russia, China, Cambodia, Germany--Oh, most of you can't imagine that happening to the United States. I say, wake-up, because it really is happening.

KnuckleDragger

The majority on here advocating the loss of one of our constitutional rights have never served a day in uniform. I would venture to guess, that if we were ever attacked, most of them would run across the border to Canada with their tail tucked between their legs. Once they got there they would be vocal supporters of the enemy.

deertracker

Exactly who is advocating to take away one of your constitutional rights? More gibberish and falsehoods as usual from you. If you think that only those that wear or wore a uniform are the only brave people in the world you really are pitiful. Everyone but you is so wimpy right? I would and have defended myself and always will. I tell my kids to die fighting, not to fear any man or woman. You probably have no clue what it feels like to take a life! Your bushmaster is not necessarily going to be your savior.

S w Rand 2016

Democrat Senator Diane Feinstein is. She has also gone on record in the past stating that, if she had the votes, she would ban all civilians from owning any firearm at all.
Are you pretending that the original push to ban all rifle and handgun makes and models that could accept clips with over 10 rounds wouldn't have effectively banned 90% of the firearms that Americans now purchase? It would've.
Granted, now it is only about background checks and a few other things. Nevertheless, VP Biden assures us that "This is just the beginning."

deertracker

No one is saying the proposed legislation would have or will prevent another tragedy like the one in Newtown, Aurora, or any where else. Why not give these families some comfort even if it is only symbolic? We alter laws when a little girl or boy is a victim. We even change or modify laws when adults are victims. It's not infringing on anyone's rights and it may be helpful. I also don't believe it is always simply a mental health issue. Some people are just evil.

KnuckleDragger

If that is the case, then why exploit the victims families for the purpose of passing these laws? Every politician supporting them is saying they are doing it to stop another tragedy like Newtown from happening. Are you even watching the news? If these laws won't do anything, then why pass them?

deertracker

Who is exploiting anyone? Fact is, the legislation may be of some benefit in the future. We both know there is no law that can stop these things from happening? Why do nothing? Are you even watching the news or just opinion style journalism? What has Meagan's law or Polly's law or any of these other laws created and named after victims prevented? If that was my child that was blown to bits by some maniac I would want something done even if it was only symbolic.

S w Rand 2016

The very fact that you can type all of that, look at it, and still dare to complete the posting of the comment, tells me that your emotions are negatively affecting your critical thinking skills.
How does taking measures to enforce our current laws equate to "doing nothing?"
And how does "symbolic" equate to "something done?"

On the issue of Gun Control, the Democrat leadership seems to prefer to make things worse rather than better. Either that, or they are severely misinformed and/or letting their emotions negatively affect their critical thinking skills as well.

The Big Dog's back

You right wingers have no conscience. No apathy, no moral bearings.

KnuckleDragger

You lefties have no clue.

S w Rand 2016

No. What probably happened was that most Right wingers actually read Feinstein's intitial Gun Control legislation and most Left wingers only caught the soundbytes from opinion blogs and/or talking point segments on TV.
After reading the actual legislation, it was clear that our children would be in even more danger if the Left's notion of "Gun Control" actually became law. Meanwhile, many Left wingers still seem to think it was only about background checks all along.

No, wait. That can't be it. At least, not totally. Many of you were asking why anyone needs a weapon that is capable of receiving a clip with more than 10 rounds, weren't you? So you must've known that this would include about 90% of the rifles and handguns that Americans purchase, yes?
Isn't it a bit reckless to propose such a law without a realistic method of enforcing it in a way that makes us more safe from criminal organizations instead of less safe?

The Big Dog's back

I'm sure minorities in big cities with high crime rates will just love the Democrat party for initially suggesting that we disarm them. I'm just so sure they recall it with fondness every time they walk through their neighborhood at night.
And I'm sure the minority business owners in those same neighborhoods really feel the Democrats are looking out for them. I'm sure this won't call to remembrance the days in the Democrat South when the Left wing once pushed to confiscate all guns from minorities. We wouldn't want anything like that on their minds during election season, especially with our current economic trajectory.

reporter54

right wingers is a generalization which has no bearing on these comments. I question the validity of the incident, the lack of details on this shooting, the appearance of grieving parents on TV to promote gun control. That's the point... where are all of the air force one trips for the people that needed a gun and had one. I don't see anyone that used a gun to successfully defend their home being flown around the country.... no one that saved others by using a gun is being carted around.... we're loosing sight of the hundreds of people that are saved just because they had a gun when it counted all because of a hand full of incidents that took a few lives. I'd really enjoy looking at the pie chart of lives defended and saved by the private use of fire arms vs the amount of people killed in mass shootings... because that's all this debate started around... losing 100 people in mass shootings over the course of a decade vs. Hundreds of lives saved each year

S w Rand 2016

I heard it was something like 2.5 million incidents that were prevented by CCW permit holders in that same time period. It is said that, because these incidents never escalate to 3 or more people dying, the national media seems uninterested.

I am also reading that our violent crime in America has gone down by 50% in the past 20 years (ask FBI.gov) and, stunningly, no person or organization involved in politics, government, etc is claiming responsibility for this awesome development.

A rich man's game is said to be golf and conservatives are referred to as the wealthy class. No go figure, Tiger Woods is admired by most golfers especially the Pros. I wonder how the Race card thinking fits in? Whenever failure sets in the easiest place to blame is the race issue. "Our" President is a complete failure. not because He's Black but because He hasn't been truthful. He's a failure only because He hadn't accomplished anything showing He could run our Country and He aims to take it down to His level.

"Saved by a Semi automatic “assault” rifle, the story of Koreatown during the LA riots"

gilamonster

Hey, I am not against more stringent background checks; scary to know that people like pooch and chemo could own guns.

I find it sad and disgusting that disingenuous politicians use tragedies to front their agenda. I honestly believe those such as Bloomburg and Feinstein love a good tragedy. We could fill the Whitehouse with more parents that lost kids in cars, pools, fires, or falls. Thousands of adults will be victims of medical malpractice; that’s a fact. I never hear anything about banning pools, governing cars to 55mph, or mandatory fire suppression units in every home. It doesn’t make good media. (Save the BS about those items not being designed to kill, because they sure do at an alarming pace)

You don’t hesitate to get in a vehicle, still the most dangerous thing a person will do on daily basis. Many laws regarding vehicles, licensing, registration, safety standards and so on; yet most any idiot can get behind a wheel, even those that are not supposed to. Are we going to micro- chip cars to our wrist or hold people accountable when their vehicle gets stolen; probably not. With all these kids dying in cars and drowning each year I would expect an executive order very soon; limiting pools to just 3 teaspoons of water and muscle cars will be outlawed. I mean what kind of idiot put their kids in an assault minivan and drives down to Walmart to pick up an inflatable death trap swimming pool, some deadly propane for grill, a pack of generic artery clogging hot dogs and a new chain for the swingset?

A novel concept that would help a little bit; hey judges keep violent criminals in jail or execute them.Disturbing that police have to petition judges to do this.

Home Boy

Wish we had as much border control as we currently have with gun control.

Remember history. Riots happened in the past and they will happen in the future. Will the police be there for you? What if for some reason the food stores run out of food? It can happen. What will you do when a mob of over 20 is breaking into your home for food or to rape your loved ones and children? Will your 3 shot shotgun or 6 shot revolver stop 20 or more in the mob? Think about it. Think about the LA riots of 1992. Riots will come. Are you ready for them? Will Barney Fife be able to help you?

Apparently you are used to the tin foil hat comments. I guess when you go around making comments like:

"What will you do when a mob of over 20 is breaking into your home for food or to rape your loved ones and children?", you better get used to those comments.

A couple years ago you used to sort of make sense on here...maybe a bit eccentric, but often had valid points. But the last few months you have really gone off the deep end. It wasn't enough to post this craziness as Centauri, so then you created another username (Bullydogs1971) to have conversations back and forth with? Perhaps you should talk to your doctor about those changes in your medication.

I am sure it is okay though. Your knight in shining armor will ride in and delete this comment before anyone else sees it.

Republican, Democrat.....blah blah blah...you guys are still at it? When are you all going to wake up and realize they are both controlled by corporate interests, not the people....they are all (minus a few) bought and paid for....i just don't understand how anybody can say one group of crooks is better than the other.....lets see...we had Reagan/Bush, Bush/Quayle, Clinton/Gore 4 years, Bush/Chaney 4 years, Obama/Biden (Hillary Clinton Sec. St. ran for Pres in 08), now we hear rumors of Hillary Clinton vs. Jeb Bush in 2016. Anyone see a pattern here?? I for one am tired of seeing these same goons every 4 years!!! Can't the greatest country in the world(cough cough)come up with some better leaders than these morons???? They all belong to the same club! Wake up you idiots, erase the labels and get rid of all these damn white color boys. Get some people in there who have actually had to work a hard day in their lives and know what its like to be a real American! I have a feeling the real America idealism is DEAD! Has anyone else just about lost hope in all that is good and honest in this country or is it just me!?!?

The only thing that would have protected those innocent children, would be IF someone was armed and could have stopped the crazy person from shooting. It was already "protected" by a law that says the school is a gun free zone. Do away with gun free zones, and the violence will stop, at least after the first shot. Stupidity keeps making laws that lawless people won't follow.

Every single post by a Republican relating to this article is notable for one theme: a complete, utter lack of empathy. They each sidestep the main player in this article, a mother of one of the Newtown children. Why is it that conservatives are unable to show empathy towards anyone, unless that person is from their own immediate family?

The most out-of-touch ones were those who took Obama to task for supposedly exploiting the Newtown massacre as a way to "advance his agenda". They don't give a hoot about the 20+ murdered kids, so they apparently cannot believe that anyone ELSE speaking out on behalf of the kids would have anything other than ulterior motives. Sad, but I guess that's what it means to be a conservative these days. I'm glad I'm not one of them, now more than ever....

if we turned our empathy for every unjust act in this world to restricting the rights of others then we must ban everything......why are we so narrow minded to think our government can legislate and regulate everything we do in the name of keeping everyone safe? Ban, restrict, regulate all you want....nothing will stop the madness...pass every law possible and you will still turn on the news and see more of the same. This isn't a gun problem it is a human problem. We are spiritually dying in this country, and no amount of laws or restrictions will change that.

I do have empathy. I do feel horrible ANYONE lost a child. BUT why should I not be able to arm myself and protect MINE? NONE Of the laws they are pushing would have stopped this horrible tragedy. It was a gun free zone. The guns were purchased LEGALLY with background checks. I am a mother. I feel bad for ANY mother that has lost a child. I have lost a child (not to gun violence but still a loss). I have friends that have lost children. My 2 cents of thoughts of the whole article is WHY were only certain parents flown to the White House on AF1? Why not parents from Columbine? Why not parents from Aurora? Why not the parent of the child gunned down after singing at the inauguration? They are using the tragedy for their OWN agenda. And the other point is....why am I NOT allowed to protect myself and MY family? Why all the NEW laws that will stop nothing, but law abiding citizens from arming/protecting themselves. Gangs, thugs, criminals and yes crazy folks will still have guns, still find a way to kill people.
I do not associate myself as a republican, conservative or democrat. I think for myself. I do not trust anything that comes from EITHER side of the fence. They are not "of the people, by the people, for the people" they are all out for themselves and their friends with the big fat checkbooks.

most people forget that not too long ago there was an assault rifle ban that falsely banned many guns from the market. do you know what happened in the following years of the assault rifle ban???? NOTHING!!! hell, cali still has a ban on the modern sporting rifles and there hasn't been anything close to a hiccup in the downward direction of gun violence.

and for the person that says the major gangs havent made their way to our area.. they must have messed the ms13 tags on the warehouses close to jefferson street. sandusky has a few kids pretending to be gangs, but they also have some heavy hitters as well... you're naive to think that they havent made it here yet... how else would you explain the massive drug influx over the last 10 years?

Gun control will happen just like national healthcare happened. This bill will be voted down, but one day the votes will be there to pass it. It may take 5 to 10 years but it will happen, and there is nothing the NRA or anyone else will be able to do about it.

1. There are 279 million estimated civilian owned firearms in America.

2. The United States is #1 in the world when it comes to gun ownership, however we are not even in the top-25 when it comes to gun murder rate.

3. 2.5 million is the estimated number of incidents where a gun was used defensively to stop a crime in the US in 2011.

4. In 2011, ALL RIFLES (including the AR-15) were involved in fewer homicides than blunt objects, fists, or knives.

5. In 2011, 1.5X as many homicides were committed with blunts objects as rifles, 2.2X as many homicides were committed with fists, and 5.2X as many homicides were committed with knives.

6. Only 2.6% of all murders in 2011 involved a rifle.

OUTLAW FISTS...they kill more people per year.

Coasterfan,
This administration will exploit anything that takes away from the very poor job that they were elected to handle,Mainly; jobs, the economy, health care, Iraq, borders, etc. To say a person of a certain political party has less feelings for those parents losses is a false statement. Parents of those killed have to go on with their every day lives, most probably have other Children to raise. Time makes the pain less but it never goes away totally. Long, long ago, our Politicians needed to let this tragedy rest.

Go Figure

On 9-11 middle eastern people flew planes into buildings, however we cannot judge the entire population only by acts of a few "Crazies".

So liberals, tell me why you judge our population by acts of a few crazies?

Your logic says that if you support gun control, then you must support banning middle eastern people from entering the U.S. simply because of the 9-11 attacks, car bombings, subway bombings, and the middle eastern people do not do this just in our country. Look what they did in Somalia the past few days. Your arguments just make absolutely no since, and how pitiful of you to have to use families of deceased children to pass you silly law. You all should wake up and realize you are just his puppets.

There are still good people that come from that racial background. That is why we allow them in our country, even though certain people from their ethnicity have made mistakes. So if certain mentally unstable people in America make huge mistakes by killing innocent people, you still (by your argument) should not judge them, because the majority of us would not do that. Gun control will not stop people from getting guns. The last thing we need is for this dictatorship to obtain any more power than it already has.

The pencil does not write the paper, the person does.
