Bellevue police chief sidelined

Don’t ever let Dennis Brandal tell you he’s a straight shooter. Not that he’s a bad guy or anything — he just can’t hit his target.

The Bellevue police chief was placed on unpaid leave last week, after failing his shooting qualification test, according to Bellevue safety-service director Jeff Crosby.

Brandal is required to pass the shooting test once a year, obtaining a specific score at the shooting range.

He failed once earlier this year, then failed again last week, Crosby said.

“It wasn’t a matter of one or two points,” Crosby said. “He didn’t pass the test. He wasn’t successful.”

Brandal was placed on leave March 19.  He’s scheduled to retake the shooting test today.

He was hired as a Bellevue officer in 1987 and his current salary as chief is a bit more than $55,000, according to city records.

“Because he can’t perform his job duty, he was taken off the payroll,” Crosby said. “He can’t do his job.”

Bellevue police Capt. Matt Johnson had filled in as acting chief during Brandal’s absence last year, but Brandal reclaimed the title when he returned in December.

Given these latest developments, however, Johnson is once again assuming the role as acting chief.

Speaking only for myself, I don't any know of them, on a personal level-- but IT IS common knowledge in or out of town.

Sounds like andy white is over there......

Maybe brad wilson could give the chief some lessons...

ANYbody who carries a gun ought to be qualified to shoot the thing. And somebody who carries a gun as part and parcel of their JOB ought to be even more so!

No, it's not LIKELY he'll have to shoot at anybody. But it's a lot more likely that HE will than you or I will, and yet WE have to qualify to carry!

The man failed his qualifying test. He SHOULD be relieved of duty at that point! So then he practiced (apparently), and took the test again. According to a post here, he passed that test this morning. Fine, now he can be back on the job.

The newspaper may be making a bigger deal out of this than it necessarily ought to be. At the same time, so are some of the people posting here! There's not a one of us who wouldn't face retraining (including that example paramedic who can't insert an IV) or have to deal with changing jobs if we couldn't do the job we have. What on earth makes a police chief exempt from simply being qualified to perform all aspects of HIS job, eh?

To all the uneducated an know-it-alls that think they know what they are talking about (tuffnutts2011), the test the chief took is a STATE MANDATED TEST TO ALL LE IN OHIO. It's the standard requalification test that... Are you ready?.... ALL LE IN THE STATE MUST PASS. SO, yes, they all have to take the same requalificaion test and yes: over half and most of them pass it EVERY TIME. Just an FYI.

I will go to the range and INSPECT this man as he takes his test, just to make sure he is worthy of his salary.

maybe they all need to be sidelined ,right down the line .since they have so many junkies and people robbing innocent people then walking through town days later smiling at the ones they just robbed ! town is a free for all over there .Dea comes to town and aids in 14 indictments with BPD .most taken into custody were out in less than 18 hours for repeat crimes dealing in pills and heroin .sounds like the "intense probation" plan is acomplete failure ,bump it up over there before the people of town bump it up for you guys !Oh BTW register your extra headline was rather tasteless ,unprofessional

yeah the one dude is or was a "barber" course he's also the same who set fire to his house a few years back.

murder!

Second Opinion

Wow, I read this when there wasn't any comments and was going to post that I thought the report was heavy handed, but decided not because I thought I would be the only one thinking this.

Put the target on a chair on the front porch.
The he wont miss!

I have to say something seems fishy. A certified peace officer in the State of Ohio is required to pass a shooting qualification each year. Why suspend him now when there is 9 months still in the year?
Also what really makes this front page news, let alone the back handed tag line? I'm dount we will see a follow-up article when the Chief passes on the front page, if it's even reported at all. Unfortunately this article seems like another weak shot, in a growing line, by the SR at a local law enforcement agency.

luvblues2

That tag line is borderline defamation of character. I know Chief Brandal personally and that was just wrong. The author of this article will be watched by me.

Grandpa04

Are u sugesting another cover up?

luvblues2

Cover up of what? Him failing his range test one day and the next day passing it? Are you kidding me? This isn't Watergate.

Happy now?

2 things- I think the kid that wrote this article needs to shoot against Brandal in a charity competition. And the fill in needs to get out from under peoples desks.

Practical888

Chief Brandal is back and WHAT?? no newspaper reporting of this? Where is your statements to the press now Crosby? Not so quick to call the papers? Is there an agenda? coverup? Do tell us. Come on SR...only want to print a catchy headline and no follow up or truth?

grandmasgirl

I can't quite figure out why you are so against Crosby. How do you know that he is the one who called papers. How do you know that it wasn't Brandal or his friends who called the papers to get everyone's attention and sympathy? I do not believe either of these men contacted the paper. I think it was just found out and then reported on. BTW, the Gazette has the fact that Brandal was reinstated in today's Headlines. I also can't figure why Chief Brandal would fail the test two or three times, and then when he was suspended, he passed. Was it laziness on his part? Did he think that being chief exempted him from the rules? Or did he just decide that he had to practice more?

Practical888

I don't see the post now, but didn't someone post he had already passed the test but the city wouldn't allow it for some reason? Why would Brandal want the attention...he declined to comment but the City sure commented.

grandmasgirl

No, what they said was that (on the day of most of these comments) Brandal did pass his qualification test. The fact remains that this qualification is something that any officer has to pass before he can carry a gun. As police chief, Brandal had to carry. From what I understand he had been on medical leave for some time. Maybe he was rusty. Sheriff's deputies usually have to qualify twice a year. I also believe that if the media hadn't have asked, this would never have been brought up by the city.

bobaluey

Are you friends with Crosby? There are reasons why he isn't well liked.
