Mother IDs teens who shot baby in head

She begged suspects, 17 and 14, not to kill her baby

The mother of a baby shot dead in his stroller took one look at a teenage suspect's jailhouse mugshot Saturday and said he was definitely the killer. Yet an aunt of the teen said he was eating breakfast with her when the slaying took place.

Despite the conflicting stories, police have charged 17-year-old De'Marquise Elkins with murder, along with a 14-year-old suspect whose name has been withheld because he's a juvenile.

Brunswick police spokesman Todd Rhodes said even though Elkins' aunt provided an alibi, authorities have good reason to bring the charges.

"That's what she's saying, but the evidence we're looking at says something else," Rhodes said, though he would not elaborate.

Also Saturday, police in this coastal port city released 911 recordings from neighbors who sobbed and pleaded for help right after 13-month-old Antonio Santiago was shot in the head a few blocks from his mother's apartment.

Sherry West said she was pushing her baby in his stroller as she walked home from the post office Thursday morning. She said a teenager, with a younger boy behind him, approached and asked her for money. West said when she told him she had no money, the teen drew a gun and said: "Do you want me to kill your baby?"

The gunman opened fire and West was shot in the leg, while another bullet grazed her left ear, she said. She watched helplessly as the gunman shot her son in the face, she said.

Two teddy bears, a vase of flowers and a decorative cross had been left Saturday against a wooden fence near the shooting scene.

Katrina Freeman said Saturday the shooter can't be her nephew, Elkins, because he showed up at her house Thursday at 8:15 a.m. — roughly an hour before the killing. She said she cooked eggs, grits and sausage for breakfast and that Elkins accompanied her and her children to run errands when they left at about 11:30 a.m.

"He was with us the whole time," said Freeman, adding that she gave police the same account of her nephew's whereabouts. "There is no doubt in my mind that he is innocent."

The slain boy's mother said she picked the gunman out of a photo lineup of 24 mugshots police brought to her Friday. When a reporter showed her the photo of Elkins taken when he was booked into the Glynn County jail Friday, she wept and nodded.

"He killed my baby, and he shot me, too," she said.

At her apartment Saturday, West had filled several bags with her son's clothes and diapers to donate to charity. She said she hopes prosecutors pursue the death penalty in the case.

"My baby will never be back again," West said, sobbing. "He took an innocent life. I want his life, too."

In 2008, West's 18-year-old son was stabbed to death in an altercation in New Jersey. Prosecutors said the stabbing was self-defense and did not file charges.

In Georgia, police said they are still searching for the gun. No eyewitnesses have come forward.

In the 911 recordings, two callers said they heard gunshots and then saw West take her son out of his stroller, lay him on the ground and try to revive him using CPR.

"Yes, I heard the shots. Somebody shot this child," said one sobbing caller, who told the operator there were three shots fired. "She's got him on the ground. Please, we need everything we can get."

The 911 operators asked the callers if the boy was breathing. Finally, a man in a grave voice, answers: "No, the baby's not breathing." He says the child was shot "right between the eyes."

A woman can be heard screaming in the background just before police arrive. Sirens drowned out her cries.

Elkins' relatives said Saturday they don't know if he has an attorney. His older sister, Sabrina Elkins, said police arrested him as he came to her home Friday.

"The police came pointing a Taser at him, telling him to get on the ground," she said. "He said, 'What are you getting me for? Can you tell me what I did?'"

The suspect's sister said he returned to Brunswick a couple of months ago after living in Atlanta for a while. While he wasn't enrolled in high school, she said, he had been taking classes to earn his GED.

"He couldn't have done that to a little baby," Sabrina Elkins said. "My brother has a good heart."

"my brother has a good heart"? if so, why did he try robbing s mother pushing a baby in stroller? why did he have GUN? why did he fire the weapon? he's a heartless person and deserves to rot in jail and be put to death

Licorice Schtick

What better way to honor the Sabbath than with a nice race-baiting article?

(why did he fire the weapon?)
Because you have to be human to have a conscience. These people I consider sub human and judging them, sending them to jail is just a waste of time and money. Sooner or later society will realize that tough love works better that hand holding for our youth to learn right and wrong before they slide to the other side. We have taken away that ability through excessive litigation and now we pay the price. A good friend of mine always says “We are a product of our environment”.

The Answer Person

If that baby had a gun, he could have protected himself. See, that's why we need more guns and less controls. Don't need the government taking away our constitutional rights.

And if you can figure out that logic, please post.

Your post has no logic, you are fishing for an argument about gun control. Maybe you could be a nice person and remove the post as it does not pertain to what happened here?

Just saying!

the answer person has all the answers, even the wrong answers..

The logic here is simple: You're playing with straw man extremes to make an irrational point, while the truth of the matter is that, had the MOTHER been armed, the baby might still be alive. If you're going to come out against self defense, you might want to discuss how the mother being able to shoot back would have been a bad thing. I won't hold my breath.

Minuteman

Of course the baby wouldn't know how to safely handle a firearm. However, if the mother had so chosen to, she could have been packing. Unless we make carrying a firearm more difficult for those responsible citizens wanting to carry. We need to keep firearms away from criminals. The criminals don't follow the law though, so the punishment must be severe for those felons still deciding to carry firearms, the law won't sway them. Laws which restrict the responsble citizen from carrying firearms only leaves them vulnerable to those criminals who are carrying illegally, as these boys were in this case. Those responsible citizens who elect to carry firearms should enjoy the freedom to that is guaranteed in our Constitution. Firearms for personal protection, mainly to deter the glorified gang types, and to preserve our freedom from any and all threats, domestic or foreign. There it is. Sorry to spoil your anti-gun party.

How heartless do you have to be to shoot a BABY for crying out loud between the eyes!!! I sure hope that the GA justice system is a lot swifter and stronger than it is here and this family is able to justice and then some closure on this tragedy. Oh my heart just goes out to them.

Simple Enough II

Something really stinks about this. Why only shoot the mother in the leg, but shoot the baby between the yes? Something is not Kosher with this incident. Think about it.

What is your theory ?

Really are you ...

The untouchable generation. They see themselves as too good for anyone but themselves. If they break the law, they get coddled "it is ok your record will be wiped clean..." No discipline at home, lack of it at school, and following in their parents footsteps. With their, I don't have to earn an honest living mentality, because if I go to jail, I will get 3 hots and a cot. Get out and repeat, this time with a more serious crime... Life is full of repeating patterns, and it is only getting worse.

Its because these punks nowadays do not know how to hold a gun properly.

SamAdams

If the incident is as described, then the aunt is lying through her teeth to protect a cold-blooded baby killer. And you know what? THAT'S how the cold-blooded baby killer grew up to BE such a thing! His family has doubtless excused his little boy behavior problems over and over and OVER again through the years. He probably didn't think twice about pulling the trigger since he's been taught his entire life that his family will come to his rescue, even if they have to commit crimes themselves (lying to police? covering up a murder?) to do it.

I want to know where the level of outrage we had for the travon martin shooting is at? Call me a racist if you like but when martin was shot there were gangs of blacks lynching white people in some kind of crusade to earn justice for trayvon.

The Good Doctor

Untrue. There were no "gangs of blacks lynching white people". Instead of racist, the term "ignorant" seems appropriate

Mrjsiah1

Thank You Good Doctor! Instead of people making up hate stories. If he is the one and is found guilty im quite shore he will get due justice in prison. Being that this is a baby it doesnt matter what you look like one way or another you will pay. And if he isnt i hope they still find the coward who did so they can get justice for this BS killing. Im tired of everytime you read a paper some Punka$$ is harming or killing a baby.

@ Mrjsiah1 , you wouldn't be implying a threat on here, now would you? That remark could be perceived as a threat.

If the killer would have been white, I've seen in the past where starry has said pretty much the same thing.

Honey. everybody's some kind of racist in this life. It ain't always about da color :)

Just like everybody's some kinda junkie ..it ain't always about da drugs. LOL!

starryeyes83

Katelih, I may be one or not , but ONE thing I've never done is come on here and posted a threat against someone else... Although I seem to get targeted alot.

Even so. My reply is the same bring back the ropes, or hey, chain gangs, I bet that would reduce the crime rate in this country even a little bit.

One thing for sure you won't see people take to the streets in protest about this baby like what happened with the punk in Florida.

So you tell me, difference in culture (s) clashing or what?
