Ohio senator has change of heart on gay marriage

Republican U.S. Sen. Rob Portman said Thursday that he now supports gay marriage because one of his sons is gay.

Ohio's junior senator made the disclosure during an interview in Washington, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported.

"It's a change of heart from the position of a father," he told three reporters during a 45-minute session in his office. "I think we should be allowing gay couples the joy and stability of marriage."

He also outlined his position in an op-ed in the Columbus Dispatch.

As a member of the House in 1996, Portman voted in favor of the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman and bars federal recognition of same-sex marriage.

Portman said Thursday his evolution on the subject of gay marriage began in 2011 when his son, Will, then a freshman at Yale University, told his parents he was gay. Portman said he and his wife, Jane, were very surprised but also supportive.

The Enquirer reported that Portman talked to his pastor and to people on both sides of the gay marriage issue, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who is opposed to gay marriage, and former Vice President Dick Cheney, who supports it. Cheney's daughter is a lesbian.

Portman told reporters his previous views on marriage were rooted in his Methodist faith.

Portman said Thursday he would like Congress to repeal the provision of the DOMA that bans federal recognition of gay marriage, though he still supports the part of the law that says states should not be forced to recognize such marriages.

So when it was everyone else, it was a sin. But now that it is his son, it is acceptable. HYPOCRITE!!!!!!!

DGMutley

bucknut36,
He can change his mind, that doesn't make him a hypocrite.

Gardenman

Let me see if I have this right. Portman is elected to US Senate from Ohio to represent the PEOPLE of Ohio. So he gets elected and goes to Washington and he is against gay marriage because of HIS Methodist church affiliation. Then he finds out HIS son is gay so HE changes HIS mind and now favors gay marriage.

Where do we find these people to run for office???? Evidently Senator Portman who was elected the the MAJORITY of votes in Ohio goes to the Senate and votes for not the MAJORITY of folks in his state the the way HE FEELS on issues the majority of voters be darn.

Regardless of the way you feel on the gay issue this Portman should be packing his bags and heading home to Ohio after the next time he runs. O agree..WHAT A HYPOCRITE !!!!

Bluto

Just like on the gun control issue . The majority of these Republican's constituents in their home states support universal background checks yet every Republican voted against it . I guess the gun manufactures have more pull with the Republicans then the ones who voted them in .

KnuckleDragger

That was only a panel to bring it to the Senate floor. Many Dems will also vote against it when it comes for the full vote. Even if it makes it through the Senate, there is no way any gun control measure will make it through the house. On that note, the background check issue has a much better chance of passing than Feinsteins "scary looking" gun ban does. Even in the Senate, a good portion of Dems have went on record saying they wouldn't vote for it. Maybe someone should ask Feinstein and Pelosi when they plan to give up their California concealed carry permits?

Bluto

Oooo , Still conjuring that the big , bad boogeyman government wants to take your guns ? Got news for ya , Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny aren't real either . ; )))

KnuckleDragger

I'm not really worried about it, I wouldn't give up my guns anyway. Aside from that, gun control has no chance of passing right now. Not sure how you got that I was worried about it from my post. Nice job of making stuff up though.

"I have been studying this issue for many years. I have viewed hundreds of pictures of guns." -Diane Feinstein :)

KnuckleDragger

So where were you when Obama's views on gay marriage "evolved?" Regardless, Portman won't be seeing my vote next time around. Civil unions...fine. Gay marriage, no way!!!

Simple Enough II

I agree with you on that KD.

John Harville

KD... good news for Ohio Democrats...

DGMutley

Gardenman, Your point is well taken but it wrong. His personal views can be different from the majority of his constituents as long as he represents the majority as a Senator. That's why the better and more in tune representatives send out questionnaires.

John Harville

EVERY ELECTED OFFICIAL is required by The Constitution (strange how you folks like to ignore it when convenient) to represent ALL his/her constituents - not just the majority of VOTERS who carried the election.

You folks need to study your Constitution!!!

John Harville

GArdenman. Every public servant is ELECTED by a majority of those voting to represent ALL the people of his/her constituency (school district, municipality, county, state, nation). Not EVERY Ohioan votes - even the ones old enough.
The sad part, here, is that Portman was adamant UNTIL it affected him personally. Even sadder is that he wants national law to protect marriage equality but wants states to be allowed to set their own laws - totally ignoring the 14th Amendment.

bucknut36

Maybe Portman can get Michelle Bachman and her husband to"pray away the gay". Which they claimed they could do. You are right Gardenman, where do we get find these people?

John Harville

Where do we find them? Portman - and John Kasich - were the SAVIOURS in the Bush Administration and in the 90s Congress who balanced the budget. That's where we get them.

And you voted them into office.

What's wrong with being happy these days?

A parent's love knows no bounds. I respect him more because he places family needs above political beliefs.

grandmasgirl

Just because your son/daughter is for something doesn't mean that you can't respectfully disagree with them. If they admitted that they had another issue, say drugs, or being sexually attracted to children, would the father say that it was okay? To me, this just says that this father would be okay with anything his son did. It is one thing to love your child in spite of something. It is another to have people vote for you because of what they THOUGHT you stood for.

eriemom

"Just because your son/daughter is for something doesn't mean that you can't respectfully disagree with them."

By this logic you would respectfully disagree about what color eyes they have. The child was born with blue eyes, but you respectfully disagree and hold you position that his/her eyes are brown.

John Harville

Gammasgirl... "is FOR something"? So if my son or daughter is 'FOR' being left-handed, I should respectfully disagree? Ya know, for years left-handed children were forced to be right-handed.
And for a long time red-haired children faced discrimination.
And if my son or daughter is diagnosed with Aspergers or Autism I still could 'resepctfully' disagree with his/her desire to function in the world and institutionalize them?
So you are comparing SEXUALITY with DRUG ABUSE and PEDOPHILIA?

Contango

Not in the Constitution: States rights issue.

Want it to be the "law of the land"? Constitutional Amendment.

John Harville

14th Amendment... So, you favor abolishing DOMA?

Second Opinion

Its Easter time, so lets consider this in relation to this time of year.

Portman has no convictions based upon absolutes, his 'religion' is self made to suit his personal desires, experiences, pride and wants. He calls himself a Christian but ignores the Scriptures where Gods commandments are taught to Christians. Portman’s arrogance has set himself to be the standard of what is good and evil instead of believing the letters God has provided for those who are called by His name,
There is little difference between Portman’s action and that of Adam and Eve, Some day, maybe at the Day of Judgment Portman will realize his nakedness. When Adam and Eve sinned against God its recorded that their spiritual eyes were ‘opened’, they knew they were no longer related to the all Holy God and now belonged to their father the devil, as Christ speaks about throughout the scriptures. So they tried to get back into the relationship they had with God and they made themselves clothing of plant leaves, hoping God wouldn’t notice they were naked spiritually. So we today do the same thing but with differences. The cloths made from plants did nothing to cover or rid them of the guilt and condemnation they had inside their heart and souls, so they hid themselves from Gods presence. It wasn’t until GOD Himself sacrificed animals and made them clothing from the animal skins that Adam and Eve was able to be covered spiritually. The Bible says:
“Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sin”
There is no blood in fig leaves or other plants which historically has been used in pagan rituals to appease their gods. During Mardi Gras people live like demons and commit every sin against God imaginable and then they believe they can sacrifice something they enjoy such as coffee, chocolate etc and this will somehow appease an all Holy God who crucified His son for those sins? This is PURE MOCKERY of Gods death on the cross! ANY sacrifice that man does in an effort to make right the wrongs they have committed to an all Holy God is blasphemy, it’s an insult to God. Forgiveness comes ONLY from CHRIST’S shedding of blood and death on the cross for our sins and nothing else can appease a Holy God except someone pay the price of our sins by their life being taken. Like it or not that is a fact, God condemned Cain for a bloodless sacrifice and if you try to appease God’s wrath by circumventing Christ’s death you do not know the God of the Bible. Until one fully understands this there is no salvation for that individual. Again, God is mocked by mans sacrifices when God GAVE His Son to die for us; your personal sacrifices insults Him and says that He died in vain. ~
Sadly, Portman’s believes that his acceptance of his son’s lifestyle is enough to cover up the transgression that the Bible claims it is, a mockery of Christ’s sacrifice which is no different than someone living in sin before Lent and then thinking giving up something they enjoy appeases the Most High God. Portman by setting himself up as an authority as a ‘god’ shall bring more condemnation upon himself than those teachings concerning his son’s lifestyle.
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his OWN way....
--Isaiah 53:6a KJV

Second Opinion, No two people believe in the same way. See my reply to Gardenman.

John Harville

MODERATOR.... isn't there a length limit?

John Harville

Second Opinion... "This is my command. I command you to love one another as I have loved you." - Jesus.
Have you met Jesus? Obviously not.

Moderators have removed this comment because it contained Personal attacks (including: name calling, presumption of guilt or guilt by association, insensitivity, or picking fights).

KnuckleDragger

You are forgetting, he spends most of his time in DC. A place where politicians live with their heads in the clouds, complete unaware of what is really going on around them. Is it really that big of a surprise that a politician would not realize their child is gay?

meowmix

Seriously?? If that's the case he probably wouldn't know what color his son's eyes are either.
The fact that he waited until after the election to come out publicly means that he's more interested in his political career than he is interested in actually supporting his son.

KnuckleDragger

Again, name me a politician who actually cares more about others than they do themselves? Politicians are mostly a group of self-serving idiots.
