Lake Erie community and area city councils, I ask we consider the options to revitalize our communities not only this summer, but throughout the year with outdoor viewings of independant cinema, symphony performances, live bands, opera, juried art shows, etc.

As a largely agricultural community, we have an embarassing history of placing the arts on the "back burner "in favor of sporting events and a night out at the local "watering hole."

While local artists have put forth their best efforts, they also rely on the classics and retread works instead of challenging us with thought-provoking, daring pieces. Why haven't we seen or heard the works of Sarah Ruhl, Neil LaBute, Andrew Lippa or Adam Guettel?

This is not the example that we should be setting for our youth, and our out-of-town visitors! Our community image is far from well-rounded. It has become a mockery. Take precedence and pride in local cultural events. Let's do what we can as a community to promote new arts in the Lake Erie region! Thank you and I look forward to the immediate weeks ahead and what we have to offer as artists and citizens.
