Mad River Harley-Davidson is racing to arrive in Sandusky before Memorial Day and Ohio Bike Week.
The new Harley dealership announced Thursday it will open May 26 at 5316 Milan Road, the location of the former Roeder Harley-Davidson dealership.
The opening is in time for local biking enthusiasts to check out the new dealership during the Memorial Day weekend, said owner Mike Davis.
It also gives the dealership the ability to help Ohio Bike Week. The annual motorcycle festival for the Sandusky area will run June 4-13.
"We're excited that we can get there even sooner than we expected," Davis said.
He and his wife are co-owners of Adventure Harley-Davidson in Dover.
The opening of the dealership will provide 30 new jobs. One person is being transferred from Dover, but everyone else is from here, Davis said.
"It is an entirely new team from the area," he said. "We're going to open up as a full service dealership."
That will include a service department staffed by Harley-trained mechanics.
Davis said 39 new Harley motorcycles have already been delivered. He said he expects to have 70 new and used motorcycles at the dealership by June.
Shirts, hats and glassware with the Mad River Harley-Davidson logo will be available at the dealership.
History buffs will know where the dealership got its name. The Mad River and Lake Erie Railroad was an early railroad in Sandusky. Construction in Sandusky began in 1835.
"The response for the name has been great," Davis said.
Ohio Bike Week organizer Steve Ernst said Thursday he's "ecstatic" about the dealership's announcement.
"It's a location our customers are used to going to," he said.
Roeder Harley-Davidson was a former sponsor of Ohio Bike Week and went out of business about a year ago.
Ernst said a booth at Lake Erie Shores and Islands East, 4424 Milan Road, is offering passes and tickets for Bike Week. A Bike Week booth will be installed at Mad River Harley-Davidson when the dealership opens.
Hours at Mad River Harley-Davidson will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
