Erie County health officials: Perkins High students safe

Fear not, Perkins parents — your high school children are safe.

Erie County Health Department officials said as much this week, after calls from worried parents prompted health inspectors to take a closer look at Perkins High School.

The health department released a report on its findings at a meeting Tuesday, after inspecting the high school Monday. The report appears to contradict an Ohio School Facilities Commission document, which Perkins Schools administrators released last week, that says Perkins High is a "serious health and safety hazard."

"From our assessment, from what we could ascertain during our two hours at the school, everything we saw led me to believe it was a reasonably safe environment," said Bob England, the county's environmental health director. "There were no outstanding issues that we saw."

I just love the uneducated wolf criers! The only wolf I see is Gunner!

goodtime1212

why did they build a new football field then?

Bluto

I'm curious . What does a 2 hour inspection entail ? Were samples taken ? Did they go through maintenance records ? Just how much can be gleaned in that amount of time , and how does it compare to the original assessment ?

Every building is a "nightmare" for the fire department. How many actually look at a building and say..."I cant wait for that one to burn, what a piece of cake"? Especially a building that could be housing students at the time of a fire! Lies come out of Gunners mouth like... stuff that comes out of peoples mouths when their lying!

All my life I have always voted yes for the levies for the Perkins School system (I'm 49), my Mom has lived in Perkins Twp for 60 years and anytime a levy came up she voted yes. We always believed in the statement that the education for the children is what matters. Realize that Mom did this while both my sister and myself went to St. Mary's. Me for 12 years, my sister for 10 (she went to Perkins for her last 2 years), this is the only benefit we have ever gotten out of our local public school system. Well except for kindergarten. Both of us regret that we feel we can no longer trust the leaders of the school system and must cast our next vote as no. Realizing that in the end it won't matter, as Gunner and the BOE will do as they feel. Don't misunderstand what I am saying, I would love to see the Perkins Schools get new buildings, to continue to provide a quality education to the youth that attend, Perkins residents and thos in open enrollment, we just no longer can support the actions a few.

Unlike the perception of many, it was not Gunner or BOE who said that the school was a health risk. It was the Ohio School Facility Commission. I know that donut thinks it’s a scam organization but they are the authority in the state of Ohio on school buildings. It is unreasonable to think that as boards and superintendents change over the years that an unbiased third party would be necessary to help them through this process.

Good news, the Erie County Health Department says that you do not have to pull your kids out of school. Reality- the schools are in terrible shape. The maintainence crews do a great job keeping them operating but it doesn’t make sense to do remodels and major repairs.

The OFSC is willing to give up to 20% to build new schools because of the urgency of the health risks. That’s $10 Million! A couple of years ago when Perkins started this process that money was unavailable.

I do not understand why everyone hates Gunner and then the board. They publically held meetings telling everyone who would listen exactly what they were going to do. Now its two years later and they are doing it. Yet, they are being accused of horrific acts. They are doing exactly what they said they would do. Some do not like it so they attack them on integrity? It makes no sense.

Gunner and BOE- great job! Keep fighting. Your school buildings are not worth remodeling. Keep pushing forward.

the Ohio School Facility Commission said that the Edison Schools needed to be replaced as well and the citizens told them "NO." The Commission's job is to get new schools built. Sure they pay 20%, but who is going to pay the other 80? Norwalk did this a few years back and they are talking about going back to the voters to get another levy for the operating expenses (they currently have a school tax and property taxes to cover the operating expenses). Did they not know what it was going to cost to operate the buildings? Has anyone noticed it flags the word Norwalk as a mispell...you would think they would have that word in their spell check as a legit word.

Great job at taking the money taxpayers had earmarked for one thing and moving into a new buildings fund because the voters said no? Great job at trying to guilt the voters with bogus claims about a dangerous school? Great job at building a new football complex while your school is supposedly crumbling right next door? You have a pretty skewed opinion of what a great job is.

The Bizness

Perkins probably should be thinking about building a new school in the next 10 years.

There are not any immediate health risks to the students.

The above statements are what the two reports have found, people need to read before writing.

Too bad you aren't in Sandusky. What should really be done is a $0.25 tax per ticket sold at Cedar Point. Then issue bonds against the new school and pay back bondholders over 20 years at 7% to 10%.

I know people disagree with this model, but we all know how bad traffic gets on 250 in the summertime.

Again, too bad you aren't in Sandusky.

What do you people think a new super is going to say. "You all are right. The OSFC report is full of lies, our schools are state of the art, and no new levies for the next ten years." Get a grip people, that is not happening. Eventually the district will enter fiscal watch/emergency, the state will take over, and I bet you won't like what they do when they are in charge! People use the board/super as an excuse to say no, you could change all of them and then you would come up with some other lame reason to vote no. On the other hand, at least some "lazy, greedy union teachers" will lose their "cushy" jobs when the levies fail. If you hate the school board so much, then run to replace them or vote them out.

bao

trouble is, they have the money for the building due to the move of the inside millage. they need operating funds now after moving the huge surplus they had and decided to hold us hostage, no operating levy, no new school. the operating levy has nothing to do with the new school building

Cowboy

So, what you are saying is we are being lied to yet again!

goodtime1212

They will build even if we all vote no, then cut teachers, busing, sports. GUunner will then say its all the voters fault due to us voting no. He is being a bully to get what he wants. Why should he care his kids dont go to school here.

Wired,

Why so much interest in me. Lets play "Where in the world is Waldo." Now clues.

I visit donut shops in Sandusky, Perkins and Huron.
I have four generations of family living in Sandusky, Perkins and Huron.
I had children attend Sandusky, Perkins and Huron schools.
I believe in personal responsibility.
I believe in family responsibility in regards to education.

Now the answer you have been waiting for...... Waldo is located between Marion and Delaware, Ohio.

@Donutshop
You Are Right. Do they still have a clanceys hamburger restuarant.

donutshopguy

life,

Waldo is famous for the fried bologna sandwich at the G&W.

CAPNTIM50

@donutshopguy, Is that the best you can come up with? No, I actually did not. I was educated in a catholic school system. But, my error was due to having Parkinsons at ripe old age of 52 and forgeting to proof read it.
What's your excuse? I thought so.

Roz1110

Gunner could care less about the tax increase, He lives near Toledo. He doesnt even live in the district!!!

donutshopguy

CAPNTIM50,

We meet again to discuss the merits of public service personnel. Our past discussions centered on police and fire departments and the bureaucracy of their fiefdoms. Now we get to discuss similar issues with our educational system. Let the fun begin.

libertarian

Let's end the charade of the coercive public school monopoly & privatize education. Government thugs create an organization that goes around the state recommending that old schools be shut down & new ones be built so that other vain & greedy government thugs (school superintendents & board members) can put bullets on their resumes & their names on buildings. Look on http://www.oldohioschools.com/ & you will be shocked on how many schools have been demolished in the past few years & how many are slated for destruction.

CAPNTIM50

@donutshopguy, I'm not gonna waste my time with you. Have a good day.

FearistheMindKiller

We need fewer schools and more drones.

Print truckloads of money for the military and not education. We really need to beef up our military, we do not have enough nuclear bombs, fighter jets, submarines or aircraft carriers. Send the kids off to military academies. Reading, writing, science and the arts are overrated!

Come on America, get your priorities straight!

Wald

Vote no 'til Gunner goes.
