Ha Ha. This is funny. It is sad too, because someone will undoubtably blame the Register for the problems at the treatment plant facility, or reporting them to the public anyway. Shame on you Register for stirring the pot.! LOL
Could it be that the 'ignorance is bliss' crowd likes to remain happy as long as reasonably possible?

Any employment environment (private & public) is a microcosim of society. It is only more visible in the public arena. You hope, one could nurture an efficient work place through respect, trust and comraderie. Unfortunately that is not always the case. When we fail to do this, all employees,not just supervisors, have the responsibility to stop the poor behavior. Those that turn a blind eye are just as culpable as those acting poorly. The City of Sandusky has many, many quality and professional employees. Unfortunately they will get painted with the same brush of contempt that is displayed in these comment pages.
Total Number of Deaths 2,403,351 USA per year. Divide by 365 days = 6584 deaths per day.
Now the easy part. there are 300,000,000 people in the USA maybe more, but 300 million to keep it easy. And Allstate comerical says there are 50,000,000 with out medical. Which equals 1/6 and the government says about a million per year lose there medical.
So 1/6th of 6584 is 1097 people die everyday with out medical insurance. Or multiply by 365 days for a years equals 400,558 deaths every year for people without medical insurance.

If whistle blowing on one’s supervisor or fellow employees could adversely affect one’s career, why should one risk it?
Less 'boat rocking' tends to be better for one’s continued paycheck and favorable position within the bureaucracy.
Here is the poignant TRUTH for you liberals. The SR is covered under the old Bill of Rights under the U.S. Constitution. I understand all of you progressive liberals want to CHANGE the constitution to modernize it or make it fit to your way of control, but you will have an up hill battle. All our freedoms are being attacked so all you crybabies and bellyachers BLAMING a newspaper does not surprise me at all. Ha! Ha! The SR has become a thorn in the side of city government, the Nuesse debacle, police and fire corruption, and the spending of tax dollars. Do we agree with everything they print?? Absolutely NOT! But, here is a tip. They have been correct in all their endeavors to investigate these issues. We all have the right to disagree. In fact I KNOW all of you miserable crybabies think the SR has a lot of validity. After all, YOU are here on their blog right? Ha! Ha!
Yes, "whistle-blowing" accompanies risk. That is why there are laws (see Ohio Revised Code - Public Employment). I would submit, before we engage in "whistle-blowing" we follow the three "P's". Peer, Policy and Professonal. Peer interaction either condones or rebukes bad behavior, hence if you do not submit to it or condone it, it tends to disappear. Policy - if the peer approach does not work, policies should be followed for coaching, counseling and corrective action. If policies do not work, then professional assistance is required in the form of legal advice to remedy your issues. For me it becomes a matter of principle. Are we willing to do something about the problem or just talk about it? I guess it is far effort to complain and hope the problem goes away. In the meantime, the damage has been done and often becomes very costly to the employee and the entire organization.

Where have you witnessed public sector bureaucracies fostering the kind of ‘principled’ decision-makers of which you write?
Decisions in a bureaucracy tend to be made in a collective mindset; they foster ‘group-think’ and promote mediocrity.
Why seek to increase the efficiency of a bureaucracy’s performance, if one’s compensation level is not tied to pay for performance? In the public sector, the slacker and the workaholic of a similar grade level tend to garner similar compensation.
One of the major keys to getting promoted in the public sector is based on length of service, not increasing productivity or efficiency.
Don't whistle blowers tend to be labeled troublemakers? Why jeopardize possible future promotions?
Creating a formalized policy to handle a perceived problem does not mean that the problem has been solved. Merely naming the problem does not mean that one understands it or that one has corrected it.
For the overwhelming majority of bureaucrats, pay will tend to override ‘principle’ – it’s the nature of the beast.

Im wondering if Deidra Cole held Kim's hair back while she was throwing up......Inquiring minds wanna know!!!! Im guessing thats not what this "cartoon" means though since there is NO WAY Don Lee and the SR would ever do ANYTHING to make Nuesse look bad....I just always find myself having to decifer these idiotic "cartoons", because they rarely make any sense....

You make some valid points, but there have been great strides made in the promotional processes involving public service, especially public safety. Many systems, such as in Sandusky, are guided by state and local civil service rules. Seniority, although beneficial, no longer plays a "major role" in promotion. Fitness for duty, competitive written examinations, oral assessment centers, college education and work history are now commonplace determinants in many promotional processess. Is it perfect, no...but we are trying to improve it everyday.
I have witnessed the "principled" decision making in my work place by many public sevants. This practice is based in the concepts of "Succession planning" and "Crew Resource Management". Please take some time to look them up on the internet. They are an interesting read and will give you the basis for what is considered the norm in public safety management.

The Nuesse firing and it's surrounding collection of bogus implications woke the Register up, and a sleeping giant at that, to the poster child of "Good Ole' Boy Politics".
The news as once seen by the Editorial Staff through rose colored glasses quickly became a magnifying glasses.
Every editorial written by Editorial Staff became less enthusistic about the Marina District as the project ending neared. The last token Marina District support editorial came only after the "powers that be" verbally beat up Publisher Phares to continue writing letters of support.
