Thumbs UP to the fellow who decided $72 was a good price for a $1 taco this Christmas season. Although the initial suspicion was understandable -- who's nice anymore? -- it turns out Darick Nolan Huffman, 20, Sandusky, simply felt like giving. Here's hoping that $72 does some good among the minimum-wage wranglers of the refried bean.

Thumbs UP to dining on the rails, as the Amtrak Lake Shore Limited brings back 1950s-style dining-car meals. Maybe, just maybe, the Eisenhower-era cars will entice passengers off the road and onto the rails, jump-starting a hoped-for resurgence in passenger rail travel.

Now, about that schedule: Thumbs DOWN to the 5 a.m. departure time from Sandusky. Still, it's a classic bootstrap situation: Get enough people interested in riding the rails regularly, and Amtrak and the railroads who own the tracks Amtrak uses will find it pays to accomodate a schedule that's more convenient to more stops.

Thumbs UP for Team Focus, which provides role models and a sense of purpose to boys in the Sandusky area without fathers in their lives. It's grown to 88 boys since it started four years ago.
