Obama says 'America's possibilities are limitless'

Asserting "America's possibilities are limitless," President Barack Obama declared on Monday that a decade of war is ending and the nation's economy is recovering as he launched into a second term before a flag-waving crowd of hundreds of thousands on the National Mall.

"My fellow Americans, we are made for this moment, and we will seize it, so long as we seize it together," Obama said, moments after taking the oath of office on a crisp day in the nation's capital.

The president didn't dwell on any first-term accomplishments but looked to hard work ahead in a country still grappling with a sluggish economy.

"We must make the hard choices to reduce the cost of health care and the size of our deficit," he said. But we reject the belief that America must choose between caring for the generation that built this country and investing in the generation that will build its future."

Hundreds of thousands of people fanned out across the Mall, and millions more watched on television, as Obama took the oath of office to begin his second term.

Sandwiched between the bruising presidential campaign and looming fiscal fights, Monday's inaugural celebrations marked a brief respite from the partisan gridlock that has consumed the past two years.

Standing in front of the flag-bedecked Capitol, he implored Washington to find common ground over his next four years. And seeking to build on the public support that catapulted him to the White House twice, the president said the public has "the obligation to shape the debates of our time."

"Not only with the votes we cast, but with the voices we lift in defense of our most ancient values and enduring ideals," Obama said.

Looking ahead to his second-term agenda, the president said the nation must "respond to the threat of climate change" and tackle the comprehensive immigration reform that has eluded Washington for years.

"Our journey is not complete until we find a better way to welcome the striving, hopeful immigrants who still see America as a land of opportunity," he said.

Moments earlier, Obama placed his hand on two Bibles — one used by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and the other used by Abraham Lincoln — and recited the brief oath of office. Michelle Obama held the Bibles, one on top of the other, as daughters Malia and Sasha looked on.

Vice President Joe Biden was also sworn in for his second term as the nation's second in command.

Monday's oats were purely ceremonial. The Constitution stipulates that presidents begin their new term at noon on Jan. 20, and in keeping with that requirement, Obama was sworn in Sunday in a small ceremony at the White House.

@ con

All you have to do is put your teeth in the drop box.

I put files in Drop Box, LOL

@ 2cents

No thanks.

Better thee than me.

IQ's are much lower on Fox

The constitution has been interpreted numerous times in the past. No one is trying to take away your guns (for chrissake) The second amendment is not absolute. Remember it was written immediately after a revolution and we were breaking away from a colonial power, a moment frozen in time. Jefferson meant the document to be organic not static.

John Harville

Jefferson was not present for the writing of the Constitution.
In 1787 Shay's Rebellion was only put down because wealthy landowners paid to arm the state's militia. Retired Gen. Washington was concerned that the government under the Articles of Confederation could not command ANY troops. He pushed for the Philadelphia Convention and the writing of the Constitution to establish federal power.
Patrick Henry urged Virginia against ratifying the Constitution because there was no provision to keep their militias to put down 'colored' revolts (since slaves far outnumbered landowners).
In August 1791 farmers in Western Pennsylvania revolted against the federal government's tax on whiskey (the 'new' tea). PRESIDENT Washington ordered militias from four states into Pennsylvania to put down the revolt which continued nearly three years. In December 1791 the states ratified the Bill of Rights including the 2nd to affirm Article wherein the President as Commander-in-Chief of the state militias. In the summer of 1794 President Washington led 13,000 armed militia into Pennsylvania and finished putting down the citizen rebellion.
The Constitution was ratified in 1789. The Bill of Rights in 1791.
All this to point out, once again, the 2nd Amendment was designed to 'well-regulate' state militias to DEFEND the government AGAINST tea-party and similar citizen revolts.

John Harville

Just change 'Obama' with ';McConnell'....

"Impeachment is a very real option". Really jac kass? Why don't you tell us how that works and how you will accomplish it. Explain to all of us how impeachment does not remove the president from office - only makes the impeachers look stupid in history (as in the only two times it happened - and neither president was removed.)
C'mon oh great Constitutional authority, tell us how your threat comes to fruition with 55 democrats in the Senate.
C'mon big man. TELL US!!!

He won again for valid reasons. Hello. This is Texaz. We want more dummies.

The Big Dog's back

Texas is poised to become a Democrat state. Once again the Dems will rescue Texas. Remember the Alamo!

Texas is and has been booming under republican leadership. Try again.

Really? Texas actually uses more federal funds per capita than it pays in federal taxes. LOL

Dr. Information

Dollar per capita.....Texas is on the bottom half, compared to the rest of the nation. More liberal states use federal funding than conservative states. Sorry, just the cold hard facts.

Figure from 2010.

John Harville

Doctor Doctor! 2010?

He won because of popularity because he is a wanna be celeb and because of race. Facts.

Bahaha. Your link is weak kid. Because some guy nobody knows named Castro says in 8 years Texas will be a democratic state? Bahahahaha, I just chocked on this crap I'm reading. And you trying it pawn it off as fact. Bahahahaha.

Hey this is just for you. Elvis is still alive, this website says so.

Bahahaha. When you can actually hold a legit argument, then you can speak to me.

What race is he? Black or white?

John Harville

His race? All-American, blended in the Great Melting Pot, just like virtually every American - even Mexican-American Mitt Romney.

For big dog.
Top 3 best run states: Wyoming, n. Dakota, Nebraska. All of which have been Repubilcan ran for a long time.

Worst 3 states: Illinois, Rhode Island, California. All of which have been democratic ran for a long time.

From msn.......http://money.msn.com/investing/l...

Same results different site: http://www.marketwatch.com/story...

Those dems sure do know how to make a state boom.

Kasich has Ohio on the right track, to bad we voted Obie.

The Big Dog's back

From 1983 to 2012 in California a Democrat was Governor for only 4 years. In case you are mathematically challenged that means Repubs were in control 25 years. In Illinois from 1977 to 2011 a Democrat was Governor for 9 years. That means Repubs were in control for 25 years. And last but not least Rhode Island. From 1985 to 2011 a Democrat was Governor for 4 years. Once again that means a Repub was Governor for 22 years. So much for that theory.

Don't know where you get your information from but the legislature is the one controlling any and every state, not the governor lol. Surprised you didn't know that.. California legislature has been under democratic control for an unbroken 42 years and now has the supermajority. Again, when you can argue with valid facts, come back.

John Harville

armn... "the legislature is the one controlling any and every state, not the governor lol"
"Kasich has Ohio on the right track".
Do you just post whatever argument you think will fly at the moment? You and Paul Ryan don't seem to realize when you write it or film it, it is there for all to remember.

The Big Dog's back

And on the contrary from 1975 to 2011 in Wyoming a Democrat was Governor for 27 years, a Repub 8. Nebraska was split and North Dakota had more Repubs. North Dakota population? Less than 700,000. Los Angeles population? 3,819,720.

3 of the least populated states.....wonder why

Can take a long time to build up a company but it all can fall apart in less than a year. Again. Republicans are in control and doing very well.

Oh No Big-O is going to loose a golf buddy!

Sure. Right after WW2 Americas's $$ went to Celeryville & other places for welfare/subsidies. Yeah those GOP folks want handouts to pay for their help. Just like some at the border states. People forget their history. Go live in Texaz if like that state so much.

Swamp Fox

Yesterday was like watching the Titanic leave the dock, great promises, disaster ahead.....
