Obama says 'America's possibilities are limitless'

Asserting "America's possibilities are limitless," President Barack Obama declared on Monday that a decade of war is ending and the nation's economy is recovering as he launched into a second term before a flag-waving crowd of hundreds of thousands on the National Mall.

"My fellow Americans, we are made for this moment, and we will seize it, so long as we seize it together," Obama said, moments after taking the oath of office on a crisp day in the nation's capital.

The president didn't dwell on any first-term accomplishments but looked to hard work ahead in a country still grappling with a sluggish economy.

"We must make the hard choices to reduce the cost of health care and the size of our deficit," he said. But we reject the belief that America must choose between caring for the generation that built this country and investing in the generation that will build its future."

Hundreds of thousands of people fanned out across the Mall, and millions more watched on television, as Obama took the oath of office to begin his second term.

Sandwiched between the bruising presidential campaign and looming fiscal fights, Monday's inaugural celebrations marked a brief respite from the partisan gridlock that has consumed the past two years.

Standing in front of the flag-bedecked Capitol, he implored Washington to find common ground over his next four years. And seeking to build on the public support that catapulted him to the White House twice, the president said the public has "the obligation to shape the debates of our time."

"Not only with the votes we cast, but with the voices we lift in defense of our most ancient values and enduring ideals," Obama said.

Looking ahead to his second-term agenda, the president said the nation must "respond to the threat of climate change" and tackle the comprehensive immigration reform that has eluded Washington for years.

"Our journey is not complete until we find a better way to welcome the striving, hopeful immigrants who still see America as a land of opportunity," he said.

Moments earlier, Obama placed his hand on two Bibles — one used by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and the other used by Abraham Lincoln — and recited the brief oath of office. Michelle Obama held the Bibles, one on top of the other, as daughters Malia and Sasha looked on.

Vice President Joe Biden was also sworn in for his second term as the nation's second in command.

Monday's oats were purely ceremonial. The Constitution stipulates that presidents begin their new term at noon on Jan. 20, and in keeping with that requirement, Obama was sworn in Sunday in a small ceremony at the White House.

Despise that man's guts. Him and Jay-Z

Hate is a terrible word, but I can say I detest everything he has done and desires to do.

Well, of course YOU would, since Obama stands for everything that many conservatives despise... equal rights for ALL Americans. You know, a more inclusive society, in which every American, no matter how rich or poor, white or black, straight or LGBT, Christian or otherwise are all considered equal and treated equally.

It's kind of funny to the more right-wing conservatives rail against Obama for supposedly being divisive. The reality of course, is that it is THEY who truly strive to push us towards a more divided country, since they wish to exclude equal rights to everyone who isn't exactly like themselves: stodgy, old, grumpy and white.

Personally, I thought the ceremony was uplifting and his message was classic Obama: we're all on the same team.

Thats the stupidest comment ever typed out in english. He has our economy booming for sure(lmfao). And my taxes didnt go up a little bit....(they doubled). And our national debt is on the decline(roflmao). What has he done for the better of the country as a WHOLE? He made poor people feel better about being poor. He made rich people feel worse about being rich, and made the middle class his playground. In my 14 yrs of being an adult, I paid double this year over any other given year. So I dont want to hear about how great he is, he is ruining the morals this country was built on. So I stand by statement and skoff at yours. If this is hope and change than no thanks.

John Harville

rickross2... 'my 14 yrs of being an adult' is chronologically speaking, yes? So, you're 32, served at least four years in the military and at least one tour in a war zone; OR you have a four-year degree and are gainfully employed in your chosen field with no federally-susidized student loans; OR a bit of both, maybe using the GI Bill which this president extended to the current military?
And wow, you've filed your income taxes already without W-2s or 1099s or other forms - and you already know how you paid double while earning the SAME income as previous years in your 'adulthood'.
In what universe did your taxes double? Blah Blah Blah.
Those "morals this country was built on" that he's ruining? "All men are created equal...inalienable rights of Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness..."
Man, you gotta put up or shut up.
...and stop hating the man living in the house built by black men.
Because... we won!!!

I never served, never went to college. I have my w-2(from BOTH jobs) and I did my taxes on Turbo Tax last night. I dont hate much honestly. And if you give me your cell number, I would be more than happy to call you and set up a appointment to look at my finances. I wouldnt be so upset if I hadnt just done them last night, but damn it I'm sick of not getting any help. Not rich enough to not worry about it, not poor enough for any help. Glad you know so much about what I have and dont have.

Ross... still gotta know how your 2012 taxes doubled because of the president since Congress just passed the law changing the tax code in December 2012 and it won't take effect until 2013??
For what 'help' have you applied but not gotten? You speak with such authority about people who don't want to work and are the 'takers' of whom Paul Ryan speaks. You talk as if you have a wealth of experience in life - education, family, maintaining a home and/or a mortgage. I just imagined this 'adult' who has learned that each person serves some purpose and that there isn't some grand conspiracy against you.

Dr. Information

What part of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness means handing out billions of dollars to people that don't want to work? Or forcing people to carry insurance, while forcing companies to cover contraceptives when it goes against their beliefs and religion. Life , liberty and pursuit of happiness.......we all have life here, we all have liberty, but its up to each person to build their own happiness, not off the backs of the tax payers.

The comment " we won" just really shows the hypocrisy of dem voters. They really are that arrogant. It's them against everyone else. They won. Did you all read that, they won! I hope that sinks in with these readers.

deertracker

You must mean all that money the bankers and Wall St. bums got.You can build lots of "happiness" with that!

John Harville

Doctor Doctor... "promote the general welfare" defined by Libertarians as that situation which arises, unfortunately, when the federal government has to provide what the private sector should but won't. It does NOT mean 'welfare' as in food stamps, etc. about which all of you speak so hatefully. It means providing 'generally' for the ENTIRE country to ensure 'pursuit of happiness'.
And yes, WE WON! Despite gerrymandering, Citizens United, billions spent by Karl Rove and the Kochs, WE THE PEOPLE won. WE put our fellow citizens where they belong - at the forefront of our concerns and cares. Try it.

deertracker

Yet you call yourself rickross! That is comical.

rickross2

Ever heard of "Freeway Ricky Ross? Not everything is what you percieve it to be. Remember when I thought you were a hunter based on your name and you tore into me for it?.........

deertracker

Never heard of him. I also don't remember "tearing" into you either. Perception is not reality. To be safe I'll just call you BetsyRoss.....yea, that works!

There you go again

Agree with you. Obama's promises are endless...........

John Harville

... endless best describes the Congressional Republicans' intention to block at every turn. Thank God and Hillary Clinton for putting RanDumb Paul in his place.

Beautiful ceremony. I was proud of how strong our President was with his speech. May God Bless and protect our President and our country. And please lose the hate and work for the good of all.

Good advice.

John Harville

They can't do it.

America's possibilities are limitless. Unfortunately, he has put alot of limits on America.

Fromthe419

America's possibilities are limitless, however our taxing, spending, printing and borrowing do have limits.

vicariouslyAlive

our possibilities are limitless, until we regulate and ban them.
