Sandusky Bay agents profile Hispanics, use slur 'wetbacks'

Three very large corporate farms in Huron County "harbor wets."

So said Agent in Charge of the Sandusky Bay U.S. Border Patrol, Cory Bammer,  according to court documents filed in federal court Thursday.

"Wets" is a shortening of the term "wetback," a derogatory racial slur used against people of Hispanic or Mexican descent.

In the email reviewed by attorneys suing the Border Patrol and Bammer, he allegedly told his agents in an email that cooperation with Huron County law enforcement is important because of the three large farms — and the people who work there.

"That doesn't meet my view of the way that we should be in the United States of America," said attorney Leslie Murray, one of several lawyers representing five individuals and two organizations in a lawsuit filed against the agency in 2009.

I was indicating that it was just something that was done in that period in time; it was accepted as the norm. Today is now and not accepted. I do not have a grudge against the British for killing relatives during the American Revolution. We seem to forget the tyranny they were living under to even think about revolting against the British.

I am a little worried about the recent knee jerk reaction to the Connecticut shooting. It took one month for our elected officials to come up with a firearms ban and yet they cannot balance the budget for two years, the president has not attended a labor meeting in what, six months!

There were masses of people at gun shows this weekend purchasing firearms, the line outside the Medina show was three hours long, I have never waited more than thirty seconds to walk into that show. The administration is using tactics to induce fear into the American people in an attempt to justify his agenda. There were also three firearm discharge accidents at three different shows this weekend. Obviously people are afraid of having their rights taken away. These times are scary when people in power do as they choose and do not listen to the majority.

I don't recall the federal government passing any new firearms legislation yet . And , don't you mean the NRA are the ones using fear tactics ? They sure as heck have the gun enthusiast up and out to buy guns . Makes for good business , wouldn't you say?

John Harville

2 cents "Masses at Medina"? Isn't that the one where the "responsible gun owner" shot another one?
When you go to that show, do you complete a background check?
The one I went to required guns be checked at the door - no conceal carry permits allowed.
Watched a guy buy 10 bigguns, then walk outside and sell them from the back of his truck.

Obviously people are being "made afraid" of having their guns taken away - yet NONE of the proposed actions does ANYTHING to take guns.

I believe it was a dealer opening a box containing a firearm and that firearm was loaded. Obviously brought in to sell or trade, a very stupid mistake for sure!

The last time there was a huge ammo shortage and a gun grab was when Obama was running the first time, he seems to make comments that stir up the general public, people that are not associated with the NRA. It is about losing a right to purchase, not that anyone needed a firearm that day.

I personally believe that if you wish to purchase or own a firearm you should be required to take the 12 hour gun safety and concealed carry class. You have a picture ID like I do, and with that ID you can purchase a firearm anywhere, even at a gun show. You then become responsible for that firearm. If it ends up being stolen then you better report it fast because if it is used by someone else then you would be responsible. Just like a rifle with a 30 round clip, I see no need to have this for home defense, an automatic or shotgun would be best so you do not kill a neighbor when shooting through the walls. That does not mean that we cannot own one, they are fun to shoot at the range or anywhere you have a clear background.

You should have to pay at least 2 cents to post on here.

OMG.LOL.WT_

Happy camper lack of disrespect??????????

John Harville

...obviously HC is one who was educated in the awful US schools.

happycamper01

Actually, HC is educated and works in the social services field. And I don't rank our educational system. It is fact that our educational system falls way behind other countries. However, thank-you for your comment. It makes me feel better about myself and the clients I assist.

happycamper01

Thank-you for pointing out my error but in my defense I think I am doing okay for someone who was in the hospital for the last three days and facing major surgery in Cleveland. However, constructive criticism is always welcome. Again, thank-you for your assistance. It is much appreciated.

2cents

Good luck with your surgery, we will probably be here when your come out of it, just stay off line until the meds wear off : 0

happycamper01

I know you will be here because you don't have anything better to do on a daily basis. I am on here because I am sick and passing time. However, when I am well I will not be on here because I have much better things to do. It is just funny that my thoughts and ideas while I am sick are much better than yours at any given point of time.

2cents

LOL, thanks to Droid, I can be here from anywhere! Breakfast at Bob Evans, worked a few hours in the office, more work in Vermillion, we walked the Boat show at the IX Center, dinner in Westlake, enjoyed a nice fire in the pit with a friend and a glass of wine then back to town. I comment here to try and get people to think, this is a small community, I could stop posting tomorrow if I chose….

Maybe I'm your surgeon :0

007 , If your ideals are so inline with the countries you mentioned , you can always move to one of them .

I am reading that people are defending illegal immigrants based upon the actions of our ancestors. Well, those are really not valid arguments. We now have a Consitution and laws that rule our nation that we did not have back then. Without laws are country would be in a much worse place than it is now. And how do you think the immigrants feel that came here in the legal and responsible way about the ones who don't? How do you think they feel that they took the time and hard work to apply, take the citizenship test, and become a citizen about those who come here by breaking the law and then try to claim the same rights as true citizens? All countries have immigration laws, not just ours, even Mexico. It may not be a felony but it is still against the law to be here illegally. We have enough citizen criminals so we don't need illegal ones to add to the mix. When they come illegally they automatically become criminals. I don't care if you are Canadian, Mexican, Irish, Australian, Chinese or what not, if you come here do it legally or go home. Besides most of the work that they come for is now being outsourced overseas. Many of our jobs that these people come for are now down in Mexico, South America, or Asia. Let them go work there. Maybe we should all move illegally to these countries to find work. If that happens then they will know what it feels like to have people who are not there legally take their jobs and government services. They would not like it at all. Now as far as the name calling? Yes, officials should know better but I have Hispanic relatives who call me a gringo and they call each other wetbacks. I have African Americans that call each other the "n" word and call us crackers or honkeys. I could go on and on. Name calling is the unfortunate part of being a part of the human race. It is totally not right but people make fun of, fear, or hate things that are different such as race, nationality, sexual orientation,or disability. Again, it is not right. However, it is one thing to call someone else a name (which again is VERY WRONG) but when a race calls themselves a derogatory name or slur, then they have no right to complain when someone of another race does the same. I have never referred to another person by a slur because I believe it is wrong. I also don't ever remember another white person looking at me and calling me a honkey or a cracker. However, I do notice, quite often, that people of different nationalities and races call themselves racial slurs all the time and think it is okay, even cool. It is not okay nor is it cool. It is stupid and ignorant. However, our officials are to be held to a higher standard and should know better. He should be disciplined or terminated because of his poor lack of judgement.

deertracker

Sometimes the terms are used as terms of endearment and you know this. How can you be racist against yourself? Stay on point please!

happycamper01

That doesn't even make sense. The "n" word is the "n" word no matter who says it. It still means the same thing. Redneck is redneck, honky is honky, etc., etc. The only way to take the negative power away from a slur is for all people to realize what the word actually means and to stop using it. I hear people calling each other that and although I know they are joking it is offensive to hear that word and it saddens me to think they want to be called such a bad name/slur in order to take away the words power. It doesn't work that way though.

John Harville

...and ignorant still is ignorant...

happycamper01

Yes, John, you really should stop calling yourself ignorant. You may be but you can rise above it. You can change. LOL

thinktwice

Yo no entiendo

happycamper01

Si entiendo mucho.

deertracker

I just love how some of you are trying very hard to turn this into an illegal immigration debate. Nice try!

happycamper01

I am not trying, just responding to what others have written on here because it didn't make sense but also including that what the agent did is wrong. He needs to be disciplined or terminated.

happycamper01

You are the one who brought up the issue of our ancestors having green cards. Green cards did not exist back then and neither did our immigration laws so you can't base immigration standards today on how our ancestors came to live and be citizens here. It is not a valid argument.

deertracker

I was responding to 2cents. So, since green cards did not exist that made them legal? Once again, this is about racial profiling and getting caught doing it. If you don't want hispanics here do your own work! Rhetorically speaking!

happycamper01

I didn't say I didn't want Hispanics here. If they weren't here I wouldn't have my wonderful nieces and nephews here. I am saying I don't want anyone of any nationality here illegally. There were no laws governing that back then, so,yes, I suppose it did but it did not give them right to steal land from the natives, or continue religious persecution, the slave trade, or many of the other bad things our ancestors did. However, "might makes right" and "survival of the fittest" seem to win out here no matter how wrong it was. And what our ancestors did to the natives and to the slaves was wrong but it can't be undone and to base your defense on how our ancestors behaved is not logical nor reasonable. We can only base this on the laws we have now. If they are not legal or right then repeal them based on what is fair and legal based on what we know now.

The Big Dog's back

The right wingers always blame the lowest person on the Capitalism Totem Pole. Why aren't they angry over the business owners that hire illegals to do work dirt cheap? These workers can't complain or they will be deported. Start at the top, don't destroy the foundation all the time.

happycamper01

Again, I am not a right winger nor a left winger, whatever the heck that might be. I do get angry at the companies that hire illegals. I feel that field work or any work we have should be done by citizens of our country. If someone is getting public assistance and they could work in the fields or another place should be made to do so or lose assistance. I also feel that our inmates should work there as well to pay for their stay in our jails and prisons. I believe that bosses that hire illegals should go to jail. Some do look at Casa Fiesta and I believe IPC as well. They defraud our country and enslave and abuse aliens and should be treated accordingly.

happycamper01

Maybe I am a conservative liberal or a liberal conservative? Maybe I am just stuck in the middle? Yeah, I believe that is where I am. I am a middle winger, lol.

The Big Dog's back

I wasn't referring to you personally.
