When a new group of first-grade students arrived in Deb Coffey's classroom in the fall of 2006, she marveled that they already knew vowel sounds and blended letters so well.

"They came to me, and I thought, 'These children are geniuses,'" she said. "But it's kept up, it wasn't just that class."
