Ohio school votes to arm science teacher with gun

A northeast Ohio school district plans to allow a science teacher to carry a firearm during class — a move the superintendent says was prompted by last month's mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.

WEWS-TV in Cleveland reports the science teacher at Orrville City Schools is also an officer with the nearby Lawrence Township Police Department.

Orrville City Schools Superintendent Jon Ritchie says there was little opposition to the move from the district, which is about an hour southwest of Cleveland.

Ritchie says the district approached the teacher about the idea. He says it saves the schools from hiring security personnel.

Orrville resident Nicole Walker tells the station that having someone armed inside her children's school following the Newtown, Conn., shooting puts her mind even more at ease.

LET'S GET READY TO RRRRRUUUMMMBBLE!!!!!!!!

WiredMamba666

Will he be wearing it in a holster on his belt for all the honest world to see? Shoulder holster? Ankle holster?

What's his piece going to be? Will it be big enough to take down an AR15?

Is he required to go Mano a Mano with a gunman, or could he choose to barricade?

BW1's picture

These questions demonstrate yet more of the ignorance driving the current panic.
How big does it have to be to "take down an AR15?" Do you even have any basis for forming criteria?

WiredMamba666

You are the one demonstrating willful ignorance.

I want to know the policies related to arming school employees.

Here's why it's relevant, among other reasons:

Your head has the thick candy shell on....it......shut up richard!!

Then ask what they are, rather than spewing nonsensical questions that betray ignorance.

herbie_hancock

"Will it be big enough to take down an AR15"? He wouldn't be shooting the AR15, he would be shooting the person behind it. He could be carrying a .22 and that would be big enough. Just because you have a bigger gun doesn't make you bulletproof...As for where he will carry it maybe you should ask him. "Required" to go "mono a mono" or choosing to barricade would be his choice. I would hope that he would seek and destroy any threat, but if he only tried to save who he could giving his circumstances would that make him anyless of a hero?...

I think our focus should be on fortifying schools to prevent someone from entering the buildings in the first place . Dealing with a shooter after they are already in the school in not a viable solution . What about reinforcing exterior and classroom doors , Automatic drop gates to section off areas in schools ? There are so many defensive options out there . Including non-lethal response weapons on the teachers .

rickross2

That was my response the day the government set that shooting up. Why not make the schools harder to get into instead of taking away Americans rights. I guess that makes too much sense and wouldnt push Barrys gun control issue. There is a very interesting video on youtube on the on goings of that day. Like no ambulances took anyone anywhere? There were at least 3 benefit websites made before the shootings even took place? The Assault Rifle never even made it into the school, yet hours later the medical examiner said all gunshots were from the rifle??????? They have video of the police taking the rifle out of dudes car after the fact. Videos of The parents of kids that were supposedly killed the day before(5 yr old kids) laughing and carrying on then turn on the sad face right as they thought the camera was turning on. The whole thing reeks of b*llsh*t.

LIKE THIS ONE RICK... makes ya think.

No......it makes me sick. I like how they always have "training" in the area of these tragedies. Its a sick a$$ game of cat and mouse.

Pterocarya frax...

Yeah...they fake this stuff all the time. Over the holidays I was on vacation in Florida. I got pulled over for DUI and spent the night at the jail in Deland. In the cell right next to me was Kim Jong iL!! I couldn't hardly believe it...but there he was. And the next morning I went before the judge. When I looked up at the bench, there was Whitney Houston...OMG.. how did they fake her death too???

You can't trust nuthin you see on TV!

goofus

So the Deland drunk opines. You do know that it is against the law to drive drunk in Volusia County? Kim Jong iL and Whitney Houston couldn't have been there, they are locked up in Seminole County with Trayvon Martin.

Katelih-Trailer...

..Did anyone happen to see Tupac?

rickross2

No but I did see Elvis though.

Bravo Orrville Schools! Lead the way.........

vicariouslyAlive

we dont fortify schools because we cant. think about how much it would cost to do the things you mentioned for just one school, and not realize that there are hundreds of thousands of school nation wide... there's nearly a dozen schools in sandusky alone.. we can't get normal levy's to pass, how do you think we could afford this stuff? just magic it into place? giving a teacher the permissions to carry a gun that he funded himself, with a ccw that he funded himself.

no it's not the best option out there, but it's the most viable one.

Bluto

As I've stated in another comment . Just wait until the schools' insurance companies get their fingers into the guns on school grounds thing , or the teachers , custodians health insurance for that matter . I work in a field considered a high health risk so my health insurance cost close to a thousand a month for full coverage . To me , someone carrying a gun at work definitely would be high risk material . Also why should teachers or custodians cover the cost of all the training , permits , and weapons themselves ? They would be protecting your kids . Don't you think the taxpayers would be obligated to also share in the cost of school security?

In the 1970's, in a nice suburb, we regularly had a police officer in the main hall of our high school. How would this be any different, given that the teacher in question is a police officer?

Bluto

A police officer in the MAIN HALL in uniform and a police officer working in the capacity of a teacher is completely two different things .One uniformed and vigilant ,as in full attention on the crowd . The other distracted by their duties educating children . If we go the guns in school route , don't go the cheap route put real security guards in place and not a gun in a teachers hand and hope for the best .

herbie_hancock

So now a teacher that may be a veteran or a cop has to rely on paul blart to protect them and the students. What if there are multiple shooters? What if the guard is shot first? Are you a cop or a veteran Bluto? If not how do you know that a cop in uniform is more vigilant then a cop in a out of uniform? If you are a cop then I would question your situational awareness seeing how you only pay attention when you have a uniform on.

Bluto

I doubt a school security team would consist of only one person . Come on , that was a silly response . Also , there are plenty of returning veterans who will need employment that would be highly qualified to fill these positions . If your idea of school security is Paul Blart, I hope you are not the one doing the hiring . And , Yes a guard who's only job is to be the lion at the gate ,so to speak would be better then a teacher in the classroom . Would you not agree that it is better to stop an attack BEFORE it got into a classroom full of children ? I would much rather my child be behind a concrete wall with a locked reinforced steel door and and unarmed teacher , then in the same room with two people shooting it out . Please read the rest of the comments before you comment . I don't mind armed guards in schools , but we have to be smart about keeping a shooter out in the first place . If your answer is to deal with an attack after it has begun instead of stopping it before , then you my friend are on the wrong track . An once of prevention is worth a pound of cure .

herbie_hancock

Whos the one that danced around the comment here? How is a cop in uniform more of an asset than a cop out of one? You've obviously never been someone that has to worry about situational awareness otherwise you would of never made that comment. Once you are accustomed to paying attention (especially when your life depended on it) to the things going on around you, you always pay attention to whats happening. Whether your wearing a blue shirt and pants or not. We can agree that more security is better than some security right? So why wouldn't you want more opportunities to take down a shooter IE armed teachers? If there is a shooting on the opposite side of the school that your security guard is on how many people could die before he got there?...More guns on target increases the chances to take down the target. BTW who's going to pay to turn our school's into state penns?

Bluto

Because the uniformed officers at the doors and in the halls are not distracted by the act of teaching and walls and doors between them and any would-be threats. The uniform makes them more visible and more of a deterrent to any who would attempt an assault.

BW1's picture
BW1

Standing in the main hall just makes him a target of opportunity. Better he's somewhere in the building where an attacker doesn't know his whereabouts, with the means to tie into the school's security system/video surveillance.

The uniform doesn't instill the abilities - they are in the individual.

HelloHello

People are idiotic. Let's see what happens when a student some how gets hold of a weapon that the superintendent approved being in the school. Now not only did you not stop someone from shooting, you contributed to a shooting.

BW1's picture

By your reasoning, police should be barred from entering schools. The guy is a cop.

You danced all around the answer with this comment . Keeping the shooter from entering the school in the first place is key to solving the problem . Intelligent security protocols , fortifying schools , trained personal who's ONLY job is security and a serious look into non-lethal defense .

BW1's picture

I don't disagree, I just have a problem with the insinuations that, because he's not in uniform, disaster will ensue.

Yea thats all fake and everything the government says is true???? Get a clue. If you honestly watch that video and still think there isnt any inconsistencies the governments story than I suggest you fart into your hand and take a big whiff!!!

Bluto

I honestly think the video is well edited and the background music is a nice touch . Makes for a great STORY . How would flatulating into ones hand and smelling it help? Does it expand ones mind to a point of absolute clarity ? Ok , I'll try it , but if I barf I am NOT going to be happy ; ))))

IMO, if he is a police officer he should be allowed to carry his gun. He is trained in firearms so it could be a teachable moment for the students.

Just noticing how the same people that are dismissing the Snady Hook cover-up are the same ones that jumped on the Trayvon Martin bandwagon and since the numerous videos that have surfaced practically clearing George Zimmerman, you never hear from them on that fact! Even Barry Soetero has backed away from his son Trayvon.

Our local Truther should weigh in on this. The one who blames Bush for EVERYTHING!
