An abandoned dog reported at a residence in the 400 block of Riverside Drive on May 6 has been rescued by a neighbor.
The dog, an older beagle, was left in an outdoor fenced-in area with a couple bowls of water and a dog house.
The investigating officer knocked on the door several times, but didn’t get a response. The officer also called the last known resident of the home, Roy Gardner. The telephone number was disconnected.
A mail-delivery person told police the mail at the residence had not been collected for days.
Police referred the matter to the Erie County Dog Warden’s office, which asked that a 24-hour notice be placed on the doorway warning that the office would take possession of the animal if no one claimed it.
Before authorities returned to rescue the dog, a neighbor took the dog in, spokespersons at the dog warden’s office said today.
