US roasts to hottest year on record by landslide

Government meteorologists say 2012 was by far the hottest year on record in the United States.

The average temperature was off the charts at over 55 degrees. That's a full degree warmer than the previous record of 1998. Normally, temperature records are broken by about a tenth of a degree.

Scientists blame the heat on global warming and weather variations. That includes the drought that gripped almost two-thirds of the nation.

Last July was also the hottest month on record. The entire year was 3.2 degrees warmer than the average for the 20th century.

The tally was released Tuesday by the National Climatic Data Center.

U.S. temperature records go back to 1895. They're based on reports from more than 1,200 stations across the Lower 48 states.

You are just plain wrong. There is a scientific consensus that we are going through climate change that is being expedited by man made pollutants...you can't argue that.

Science works by reports being written then being peer reviewed, and up until now there has been no study that points to human pollution not contributing...not a single one.

When there is a peer reviewed study that shows that humans haven no impact on what is going on then I will eat crow but until then...I will trust in the current scientific consensus and work to change our polluting ways.

Maybe if the right would get an education from a qualified school other than radio talk show hosts and fox news, they would more understand what creates the weather and how one thing can affect another. Yes, more lake effect snow can be caused by warmer climate. Think about what creates lake effect snow and you will find your answer. What causes Alaska to be warmer in the winter sometimes than the CONUS states in the same winter? While we were having 8 degree temps here in Iowa, I spoke to a person in Alaska and they were having 30 degree temps up there at the same time. How is this possible? It isn't more sunshine, because it is the winter that they have the shortest days - even shorter than ours. There is a reason for this happening - still not convinced it is caused by man - but it is definitely happening.

The thing not in this quote is that it has never in its history warmed by this much at this current...not too mention lost sea ice this fast. Rising sea water could ruin coastal cities (where most population centers are) in less than 100 years. Costing our government and others trillions of dollars.

Without taxpayer subsidized flood insurance, many would choose to live further inland if they had to pay for the loss themselves.

No private insurance co. will cover them.

The wealthy get the nice ocean front view and you get the bill. :)

Great answer - change the subject. But while you are talking about private insurance companies - they are the problem, not building houses on the coast line. Generally those homes don't flood. Yes, they get hurricanes - so why has Allstate refused the majority of Hurricane Sandy claims for things like roofs blown off - blaming it on "flooding"??? Those people have insurance to cover hurricane and wind and storms - but as soon as the storm destroys a home, the insurance company comes along and declares it is flood damage and refuses to pay. This is an example of your wonderful private insurance companies (extremely rich, powerful, and receiving very large tax breaks) stiffing people and forcing them to make claims with the government and obtain YOUR tax money. Why aren't you guys screaming bloody murder for insurance reform? Because you love the rich, high profit, tax break getting big business and just make more excuses to blame something else on government eating up tax money. If it wasn't for the crooked rich big business, such as Allstate Insurance company - there wouldn't' be as much need for the government to cover homes and belongings due to natural disasters, which insurance policies DO cover.

Let's see. Fact Dust Bowl 30's. Louis Broomfield/Malabar Farms proved how things need to be grown. Presently extremely low H2O table/Kansas. Of course the Good Book never talked about famine either. Naw..man has never degraded (fill in the blank) anything.

Gotta love it. Isn't it interesting that the same ones who are denying actual scientific data from experts that show that global warming is, indeed, happening, are the same ones who are in denial about current American politics. Articles citing new evidence verifying global warming appear almost daily, so it takes some stunning mental gymnastics to discount the mounting evidence. The Antarctic ice shelf is melting FROM BENEATH and huge sections are calving from both the Arctic and Antarctic shelf at unprecedented levels. This is not an "opinion" issue, folks, these are things that are really happening, and it's only the members of one political party who insist it's not happening. Not surprisingly, it's the political party that traditionally doesn't give a hoot about protecting our natural Resources. Conservative leaders have financial reasons to deny global warming. As we know, they champion big oil and coal energy, the very fossil fuels that are exacerbating the problem. Let's stop and think of what our coastal cities will be like when the ocean levels rise by eight feet. I would assume that they won't even admit they are wrong when they are standing under several feet of water. Ah conservatives... The best free entertainment available....

goofus

Any sources to back up your claim of daily articles confirming global warming and not from leftwing sites. Oh wait a minute with the lamestream state run media that could be a tough nut to crack.

Hey where were all the global alarmists during the summer of 2009? One of the coolest summers in the northern and southern hemisphere; locations in Michigan recorded 36 degree highs in July. Not a peep from anyone. Ok, where were the fear mongers during the winter of 2009/ 2010? One of the coldest winters in years with locations in Europe and Russia breaking records. Brutus is right though, it is all about money; even a simpleton can follow the trail from Gore and his minions that who are or will be raking in the cash from all this fear. Say what version of “climategate” are we up to? Seems to me if all the data is in your court you need not lie or skew data in your favor. If nothing else look to the past, earth has cycled her climate numerous times.

The Bizness

Actually 2009 was the 7th hottest year on record globaly...good try though.

Gore did more to help America than the guy who actually did serve as president in 2000, IMHO. We Democrats will take no pleasure in saying "we were right", about 20-30 years from now, when even the biggest lunkheads will have to admit that the scientists were right.

What kind of person thinks that they actually know more than scientific experts who have studied the situation for decades? Conservatives won't have long to bury their heads in the sand. At some point in the not too distant future, they'll be able to bury their head in water...

goofus

Why twenty years? According to Gore isn't NYC supposed to be underwater right now???

gilamonster

So scientists and engineers are never wrong? Hahaha….I never realized Gore was a scientists; though without his contributions we would not have the internet. He is a good little alchemist; turning fear into gold. So I should believe, lets say, the “scientists” from the UK who stated that having kids or pets damage the environment just as much as driving a v8 Land Rover, and need to be “limited”. How about the “scientists” that claims the increase in UFO sightings are related to global warming? How is this one, an automated system of the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) published information on the extent of Arctic sea ice. It contained a small but strange hitch indicating that enough ice to cover California was suddenly gone. Within hours the NSIDC withdrew the data, ultimately finding that the glitch resulted from a faulty sensor on a satellite. The NSIDC scientists finally admitted the mistake, corrected the problem using a different sensor and audited all past data. Should I go on……..

Lived some of this. Watched what "modern" farm practices did to Honey Creek. We used to catch many panfish there. Gigged many frogs also. That's gone. Have 5 acres of hay ground also. It has taken years to get the legumes to really propogate thanks to the chemical residue applied while I was away (military). Those that were/are involved in agriculture know what was. If they are honest they know what is.

If true, the Kennedys, Al Gore and other rich liberal coastal dwellers oughta be unloading their estates at rock bottom prices wouldn't ya think?

Funny, ol' "Teddy" and other members of the Kennedy crime family fought against the placement of wind turbines off the MA coast.

Hypocritical powergrabbers and the lefty sheeple fall for their nursery stories.

After reading some of the comments from "bury their head in the sand" folks, I shake my head in disbelief. Articles citing studies and scientific evidence verifying global warning appear almost daily. We can argue as to the extent that mankind is speeding up the process (which is most certainly IS), but it's silly for some to argue whether it is happening at all. Texas-sized ice shelves are calving off the Antarctice ice shelf, and the entire Antarctic ice mass is melting FROM BENEATH. Satellite photos show just how much of the Arctic polar ice cap has melted since the 1970's. Polar bears are actually drowning because their habitat is melting under them.

These studies are from scientific experts who have studied the situation For decades, and the vast majority of then concur on what is happening.

Let 's examine who the opposition is. It's the usual suspects: conservatives who oppose anything that would help preserve anything related to natural resources. The same people who champion fossil fuels, you know, those things which have been proven to INCREASE carbon emissions which increase global warming. So basically, they have an ideological and financial reason to ignore science and pretend global warming isn't happening...

This is not a matter of opinion folks. All we need to do is open our eyes and ears to the evidence. By the year 2100, they predict that the ocean will rise a full meter. At that point, I expect Republicans willl still be pretending it's not happening, as they stand waist deep in water in places that used to be dry along our coastline.

goofus

Once again I ask you for sources not only on the daily bombardment but also polar bears, i have seen articles that the polar bears are thriving in a different area.

O key do key goof. Ponder this. Study Rudolph Diesel. Look at the real VW-xl1. Sad that vehicle will not be made, though a few were & the LACK of fuel useage is phenominal. Shades of R.Buckminster Fuller & his Dyanmaxion. Godda wonder.......usual suspects again. Stinkin monied people? Why do people hate facts?
