US roasts to hottest year on record by landslide

Government meteorologists say 2012 was by far the hottest year on record in the United States.
Associated Press
Jan 8, 2013

The average temperature was off the charts at over 55 degrees. That's a full degree warmer than the previous record of 1998. Normally, temperature records are broken by about a tenth of a degree.

Scientists blame the heat on global warming and weather variations. That includes the drought that gripped almost two-thirds of the nation.

Last July was also the hottest month on record. The entire year was 3.2 degrees warmer than the average for the 20th century.

The tally was released Tuesday by the National Climatic Data Center.

U.S. temperature records go back to 1895. They're based on reports from more than 1,200 stations across the Lower 48 states.

Global warming or the deficit, which will kill us first?

concernedtruth

Al Gore and Global warming are both FRAUDS, global warming is just another scam by some scam artists who have alot of lunatics as friends. I have heard global warming for over 30 years and still they say "the bitter cold is global warming", next year it's "the summer heat is global warming", pretty soon it will be "nothing is happening to our weather, that's global warming". Proven fact scientists who have spoken out against global warming are now considered to be quacks and before they were the smartest and brightest when they agreed with the global wackos.

wiredmama222

You need to read the "junk science" report the Swedish scientists have on how all this started. You will love it. This is nothing more than a bunch of junk which started in England under Margret Thatcher.

So it looks like falling off the fiscal cliffs will kills us all before this so called 'global warming' will. LOL

Note: Two reasons - not one.

Love the use of "average" temp. "Real" scientific.

On "average" the Great Lakes never freeze.

Note that these are "government" meteorologists. No "possible" political agenda eh?

sanduskysteve

Strange that you guys can't figure out that no matter what you call this - it is still climate change. Can't say why - but it IS happening. They have been keeping track of weather for a century or more. You guys have for years now claimed this is cyclic. When records are set, I'm not buying that story either. What is the cycle then? every few hundred years? What, then is the peek of the cycle? Since you mentioned the Lake not freezing - let me remind you all of something. When I was in high school - the lake froze every year and deep enough that many people drove cars on the lake. For the past decade or so - it's been hard to even walk on the lake or bay to go ice fishing! Another thing - why do you think lake effect snow has increased over the past decade or so? Because the lake isn't freezing! Lake effect snow is generated when the cool air come across the water and picks up moisture. Stop the lake from freezing and you will generate much more snow. Exactly the opposite of your argument that we can be warming up because we have more snow! The climate is changing and during that change, records are being broken. This does, unfortunately, fit into the definition of climate change.

An article written by a columnist for Fox News and a paid advocate for Phillip Morris, ExxonMobil and other corporations?

No,of course not.
There's no "possible" political agenda.

Contango

David Keith - Harvard. Yea, probably no "political" agenda there.

Fact: If the U.S. stopped the production of all so-called "greenhouse gases," it would have little to no effect globally.

It's an incentive trap:

You refuse to charge anything on the group credit card, but you're still responsible for paying a percentage of the bill.

Where's the incentive to stop?

If "possible," think it through:

So what are you gonna do about India, China and the myriad of other developing countries that are burning fossil fuels and will do so in the future?

In comparison, the U.S. is a drop in the bucket!

The Kyoto Accords are in a mess.

The Bizness

We should not just ignore the issue however. Brazil already is working on cutting its emissions, China and India are having environmental issues already and it will only be a matter of time until the people revolt or demand change.

I am not saying a carbon tax is the way to fix it, I think it has to be more from the bottom up.

Contango

@ The Bizness:

The leaders of both China and India are more concerned with economic development. Gotta crawl before you can walk.

We're talking several "decades," if not centuries.

Look at Cleveland, the air is much cleaner, the environment better than it was back in the 60s and 70s - but no jobs.

Wait'll the welfare checks and food stamps stop that help support that economic depression of a city because of rising debt and then multiply that nationally.

We've got much more pressing economic issues than "global warming" as do India and China.

goofus

I remember well one of the last protest in China, Tiaeminem Square. Will China have solar powered tanks to run over the enviromental protestors and the chinese demanding change LOL Keep Dreaming!!!!

China has thousands of protests annually. Their press surpresses the news.

The people need jobs! They have millions of people moving from country to city each and every yr.

shucks

@ con

I knew it wouldn't make any difference if the USA stopped because OTHER countries are polluting the air.
You made it sound like there are no consequences from burning fossil fuel.Sounds like you're going back and forth.
Coming from you, it's NOT "possible" to think about it or to understand it .

sanduskysteve

Honestly, I'm not too sure this climate change has anythign to do with greenhouse gases or fosil fuel. I'm not completely sure what it is - but the most drastic climate change has been in the past few years. And I think the track of the sun on the earth's surface may have something to do with this caused by a slight change in the tilt of the earth. Another topic that many beleive is not true - it definitely would explain what is happening - including the unusual weather on the eastern coast which was limited mostly to the west coast. Just one example of several that could be used.

Sure thing puppy belch.
Your leader in this cause of Global Warming Al Gore just tried to beat the Obama tax man to dodge paying his fair share.

He sold his global warming/tree hugger network "Current" to Al-Quida however you spell it. Now they can broadcast their attack plans over the air.

You remember them, the people that have attacked us many times around the world and have gotten their money to buy this from Gore by selling that nasty old oil.

Seems more like the left-wing wackers are at it again.. Yep it's all about the money to them and definetly NO sense.

The Big Dog's back

Al Jazeera. No different than foreign owned fox news. Besides, Progressives don't spend all their time in front of a TV or radio.

sanduskysteve

One more thing - Al Jazeera has NEVER attacked the US or anyone else that I'm aware of - it's a tv network with more fair and balanced news than Fox could ever present as they don't have an agenda from either political party.

The Bizness

The problem is real....all scientific evidence points to the fact that it is made worse by human CO2 production, and now with fracking, and melting tundra more and more methane is being admitted. Not too mention our love for meat...

We must use less fossil fuels....
We must eat more organically grown veggies...
We must eat less meat, and what we do eat should be grass fed...
We must move towards wind, solar, tidal, and other renewable energy sources...

It really is that simple

Dr. Information

There isn't enough data to prove anything. Our climate, other planets climates go through change and cycles that last much longer than our data has been collected and much longer than you or I will ever live.

So if this summer is much cooler, will it still be global warming?

The liberal left, like Al Gore was so embedded in Global Warming for one reason. Money. His global warming stats were about as factual as him "creating" the internet. He's made millions off of investments into the global warming scam and that is ok to the left, because the left will side with anyone on the left at any cost.

You can't win with global warming advocates. Cool summer....global warming. Hot summer....global warming. Above avg winter....global warming. Blizzards in the winter....global warming. You just cannot reason with them.

The Bizness

You are just plain wrong. There is a scientific consensus that we are going through climate change that is being expedited by man made pollutants...you can't argue that.

Science works by reports being written then being peer reviewed, and up until now there has been no study that points to human pollution not contributing...not a single one.

When there is a peer reviewed study that shows that humans haven no impact on what is going on then I will eat crow but until then...I will trust in the current scientific consensus and work to change our polluting ways.

sanduskysteve

Maybe if the right would get an education from a qualified school other than radio talk show hosts and fox news, they would more understand what creates the weather and how one thing can affect another. Yes, more lake effect snow can be caused by warmer climate. Think about what creates lake effect snow and you will find your answer. What causes Alaska to be warmer in the winter sometimes than the CONUS states in the same winter? While we were having 8 degree temps here in Iowa, I spoke to a person in Alaska and they were having 30 degree temps up there at the same time. How is this possible? It isn't more sunshine, because it is the winter that they have the shortest days - even shorter than ours. There is a reason for this happening - still not convinced it is caused by man - but it is definitely happening.

The thing not in this quote is that it has never in its history warmed by this much at this current...not too mention lost sea ice this fast. Rising sea water could ruin coastal cities (where most population centers are) in less than 100 years. Costing our government and others trillions of dollars.

Without taxpayer subsidized flood insurance, many would choose to live further inland if they had to pay for the loss themselves.

No private insurance co. will cover them.

The wealthy get the nice ocean front view and you get the bill. :)

sanduskysteve

Great answer - change the subject. But while you are talking about private insurance companies - they are the problem, not building houses on the coast line. Generally those homes don't flood. Yes, they get hurricanes - so why has Allstate refused the majority of Hurricane Sandy claims for things like roofs blown off - blaming it on "flooding"??? Those people have insurance to cover hurricane and wind and storms - but as soon as the storm destroys a home, the insurance company comes along and declares it is flood damage and refuses to pay. This is an example of your wonderful private insurance companies (extremely rich, powerful, and receiving very large tax breaks) stiffing people and forcing them to make claims with the government and obtain YOUR tax money. Why aren't you guys screaming bloody murder for insurance reform? Because you love the rich, high profit, tax break getting big business and just make more excuses to blame something else on government eating up tax money. If it wasn't for the crooked rich big business, such as Allstate Insurance company - there wouldn't' be as much need for the government to cover homes and belongings due to natural disasters, which insurance policies DO cover.

Gotta love it. Isn't it interesting that the same ones who are denying actual scientific data from experts that show that global warming is, indeed, happening, are the same ones who are in denial about current American politics. Articles citing new evidence verifying global warming appear almost daily, so it takes some stunning mental gymnastics to discount the mounting evidence. The Antarctic ice shelf is melting FROM BENEATH and huge sections are calving from both the Arctic and Antarctic shelf at unprecedented levels. This is not an "opinion" issue, folks, these are things that are really happening, and it's only the members of one political party who insist it's not happening. Not surprisingly, it's the political party that traditionally doesn't give a hoot about protecting our natural Resources. Conservative leaders have financial reasons to deny global warming. As we know, they champion big oil and coal energy, the very fossil fuels that are exacerbating the problem. Let's stop and think of what our coastal cities will be like when the ocean levels rise by eight feet. I would assume that they won't even admit they are wrong when they are standing under several feet of water. Ah conservatives... The best free entertainment available....

goofus

Any sources to back up your claim of daily articles confirming global warming and not from leftwing sites. Oh wait a minute with the lamestream state run media that could be a tough nut to crack.

Hey where were all the global alarmists during the summer of 2009? One of the coolest summers in the northern and southern hemisphere; locations in Michigan recorded 36 degree highs in July. Not a peep from anyone. Ok, where were the fear mongers during the winter of 2009/ 2010? One of the coldest winters in years with locations in Europe and Russia breaking records. Brutus is right though, it is all about money; even a simpleton can follow the trail from Gore and his minions that who are or will be raking in the cash from all this fear. Say what version of “climategate” are we up to? Seems to me if all the data is in your court you need not lie or skew data in your favor. If nothing else look to the past, earth has cycled her climate numerous times.

The Bizness

Actually 2009 was the 7th hottest year on record globaly...good try though.

coasterfan

Gore did more to help America than the guy who actually did serve as president in 2000, IMHO. We Democrats will take no pleasure in saying "we were right", about 20-30 years from now, when even the biggest lunkheads will have to admit that the scientists were right.

What kind of person thinks that they actually know more than scientific experts who have studied the situation for decades? Conservatives won't have long to bury their heads in the sand. At some point in the not too distant future, they'll be able to bury their head in water...

goofus

Why twenty years? According to Gore isn't NYC supposed to be underwater right now???

gilamonster

So scientists and engineers are never wrong? Hahaha….I never realized Gore was a scientists; though without his contributions we would not have the internet. He is a good little alchemist; turning fear into gold. So I should believe, lets say, the “scientists” from the UK who stated that having kids or pets damage the environment just as much as driving a v8 Land Rover, and need to be “limited”. How about the “scientists” that claims the increase in UFO sightings are related to global warming? How is this one, an automated system of the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) published information on the extent of Arctic sea ice. It contained a small but strange hitch indicating that enough ice to cover California was suddenly gone. Within hours the NSIDC withdrew the data, ultimately finding that the glitch resulted from a faulty sensor on a satellite. The NSIDC scientists finally admitted the mistake, corrected the problem using a different sensor and audited all past data. Should I go on……..

Lived some of this. Watched what "modern" farm practices did to Honey Creek. We used to catch many panfish there. Gigged many frogs also. That's gone. Have 5 acres of hay ground also. After reading some of the comments from "bury their head in the sand" folks, I shake my head in disbelief. Articles citing studies and scientific evidence verifying global warning appear almost daily. We can argue as to the extent that mankind is speeding up the process (which is most certainly IS), but it's silly for some to argue whether it is happening at all. Texas-sized ice shelves are calving off the Antarctice ice shelf, and the entire Antarctic ice mass is melting FROM BENEATH. Satellite photos show just how much of the Arctic polar ice cap has melted since the 1970's. Polar bears are actually drowning because their habitat is melting under them.

These studies are from scientific experts who have studied the situation For decades, and the vast majority of then concur on what is happening.

Let 's examine who the opposition is. It's the usual suspects: conservatives who oppose anything that would help preserve anything related to natural resources. The same people who champion fossil fuels, you know, those things which have been proven to INCREASE carbon emissions which increase global warming. So basically, they have an ideological and financial reason to ignore science and pretend global warming isn't happening...

This is not a matter of opinion folks. All we need to do is open our eyes and ears to the evidence. By the year 2100, they predict that the ocean will rise a full meter. At that point, I expect Republicans willl still be pretending it's not happening, as they stand waist deep in water in places that used to be dry along our coastline.

goofus

Once again I ask you for sources not only on the daily bombardment but also polar bears, i have seen articles that the polar bears are thriving in a different area.
