Richard Koonce knows what it's like to have to pull yourself up by your bootstraps. He will tell you that when he was growing up, he didn't have a charmed life. However, that didn't stop him from becoming an accomplished professional.

He is a man who is absolutely passionate about education.

He believes students who truly want an excellent education through Sandusky City Schools can get one. He is living proof. He earned a Ph.D. in communication studies from Bowling Green State University and is currently an assistant professor at Walsh University. He lives in Sandusky with his family and volunteers his time mentoring, tutoring, and coaching Sandusky 's youth. In the past five years, he has coordinated three college tours for Sandusky High School teens so they could begin to see themselves on a college campus and attaining a higher education. Many of them are in college today. And as if all of this isn't enough, he is running to serve on the Sandusky Board of Education.

I have known Richard Koonce for four years. He is visionary, he is driven and he has the political courage to make the difficult decisions. He is willing to sacrifice being popular to improve education. He is a leader, not a follower.
