SANDUSKY TWP.

A Fremont man died Friday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash just west of the city. Stephen J. Lucas, 52, was thrown from his vehicle and suffered severe head trauma. He was pronounced dead at the scene and taken to Keller/Ochs Funeral Home in Fremont.

Jeanette M. Gleba, 59, Fremont, was driving north on Bartson Road in a 2009 Toyota Corolla, attempting to cross Hayes Avenue at about 2:25 p.m., when she failed to yield from the stop sign and pulled into the path of Lucas. The car Lucas was driving, a 2004 Freightliner Sprinter cargo van, went off the right side of the road and overturned on the driver’s side. Lucas was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle, which rolled on top of him.

Gleba was taken to Fremont Memorial Hospital and later flown by medical helicopter to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo. She was in fair condition Friday night, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

She was wearing a seat belt and her side airbags deployed, which minimized her injuries, according to the Fremont post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Her vehicle sustained severe damage and was towed by Madison’s Towing. The Fremont post continues to investigate the crash.
