It's the second year in a row that Gov. John Kasich has authorized an additional appropriation for the Ohio Association of Foodbanks to meet the growing demand.
The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services will distribute the extra money. It's director, Michael Colbert, tells The Columbus Dispatch (http://bit.ly/YsOX3m ) that even though the recession is over, many people are still struggling to find jobs and feed their families.
The $1 million will benefit more than 3,300 pantries, soup kitchens and shelters. It was available from the state's Temporary Assistance to Needy Families fund.

This is great news BUT~I thought Ohio was so broke? I work and am barely eating with my wage cuts and all. Strange.
More free handouts....Why would anyone want to go out and look for a job!
Are you that ignorant? A lot of these folks who use the food banks are elderly, and the only income they have is Social Security. I get so tired of people acting like evryone who gets something for free is "on the take".
I know that there are people out there who really need help, but there are others that just take because they can. I like the title of the fund "TEMPORARY" Assistance to Needy Families".
Before anyone complains about it , perhaps they should go to one of these soup kitchens and speak directly to those people using them . You might see things differently . Merry Christmas .
Agree.
Good idea, Bluto! I have to give Kasich props for this 2nd year gift for the needy. I hope it becomes an annual event. Merry Christmas back at ya.
Like I said~this is GREAT news there are alot of people that lost their JOBS and are in NEED right now but..... are THEY the people getting the help? I see too MANY that LIVE on FREE handouts EVERYDAY. I remember NEEDING the help for just a SHORT time and was REFUSED.
Food Banks are a great idea and I donate on a regular basis. At least you know people are getting food that need it. What pisses me off is watching a very healthy young woman pull out her food card at the grocery store. Talk to the cashier about how she has to many kids at home to work and then pulls out a fresh 20 dollar bill on a separate buy and gets her a couple packs of smokes. TRASH
