FLORENCE TWP.

A Vermilion man was seriously injured after apparently losing control of his motorcycle Sunday afternoon.

The crash occurred at about 12:35 p.m. on Harrison Road, just south of Angling Road in Erie County, according to the Sandusky post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Anthony J. Lavecchia Jr., 46, 12219 Cherry Road, was heading south on Harrison Road on his motorcycle when he drove off the right side of the roadway, attempted to swerve back onto the road and struck a mailbox and mailbox post with the right side of the motorcycle.  His motorcycle spun around and overturned on its left side, throwing him onto the roadway.

Lavecchia was not wearing a helmet and suffered incapacitating injuries. He was treated at the scene by the Citizens Ambulance Service of Wakeman, then transported by medical helicopter to Cleveland Metro Hospital for treatment of head injuries.

Neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the crash, according to the highway patrol. No citations have been issued and the crash remains under investigation.
