Small business a good choice for holiday shopping

Planning big for Christmas? Consider going small and going downtown.

A trip to specialty shops and retailers at downtown districts throughout the region — Sandusky, Port Clinton and Norwalk, for instance — is a surefire way to beat the crowds while keeping your money local.

It's also a entirely different sort of holiday shopping experience, free of oversized parking lots and hoards of shoppers. For small-town business owners, however, it's not always easy to lure in the customers.

Downtown holiday celebrations, Small Business Saturday — the day after Black Friday — and other promotions play a role in keeping downtown districts front and center, although owners of these small business have to work doubly hard to spread their message amid the barrage of of holiday advertising.
