Thumbs UP for the Pet Expo, to take place for the second time July 25 at Sandusky Bay Pavilion (or the former Surf's Up, if you prefer). In addition to letting some of us show off our furry friends, we can take a look at animals that could use a good home, and maybe learn a little bit about taking care of the ones we have.

Thumbs UP to Firelands' outpatient diabetes clinic, billed as the only one of its kind in the area. Given a population that's getting older and, let's not mince words, fatter, it's a problem that needs to be addressed. Meanwhile, let's all watch what we eat, walk when we really don't have to drive and maybe help lighten the load at this new clinic.

Thumbs UP for Jonathan Brown, who's carrying on the dream of his late father, Purvis Sr., to have a community center in the Searsville neighborhood in Perkins Township. It looks closer now, and we salute his perseverance, his honoring of his father's memory, and the apparent nearness of his success.

Thumbs UP for the callback at Whirlpool in Clyde, with everyone who was laid off being told they can head back to work. Some have since found other jobs and may not be in a position to go back, but this is nonetheless a bright spot in a steady stream of economic grayness. Let's hope it lasts.
