In response to the recent letter to the editor, "Cube math doesn't square," there were a few things not considered when evaluating the economics of the WindCube.

First, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 allows owners of small wind systems with 100 kilowatts of capacity or less receive an uncapped investment tax credit for 30 percent of the total installed cost of the system.

Second, accelerated depreciation applies to the asset class, with 50 percent bonus depreciation in 2009.

Given these two variables, along with the 40 percent grants available from the Ohio Department of Development, a company with a good wind resource will realize a 3-4 year payback. There are also USDA grants available in lieu of state grants.
