After last week’s news that Ohio legislators were at a standstill on the state budget, leaders at Erie County Job and Family Services this past weekend sent layoff notices to each of the department’s 100 employees.

It was a precautionary move that may be irrelevant now, given that state legislators are on the cusp of approving the budget. But county officials said they had to send the notices out in case the budget wasn’t approved, because the county doesn’t have the money to cover salaries for the 100 Job and Family Services workers for more than a week.
