NEW LONDON

Officials are searching for a man who escaped from the backseat of a police cruiser Tuesday night.

The 48-year-old man was first spotted about 11 p.m. at Expressions dance club in Fitchville attempting to break into vehicles, Huron County Sheriff’s Capt. Ted Patrick said.

A deputy later found him at the McDonald’s Restaurant parking lot in New London on Ohio162 and arrested him, placing him in the backseat of a cruiser.

Two deputies then searched the man’s vehicle, which was reported stolen from Indiana, Patrick said.  When they returned, the found the suspect had damaged the rear passenger side door and escaped.

Patrick said several agencies searched for the man with the help of police dogs and an infrared plane from the state highway patrol.

The suspect faces several felony charges, including receiving stolen property, theft and escape.

He is described as a white man about 5 feet, 7 inches and 160 pounds, with long brown hair and brown eyes.
