Cleveland wants tougher law for passing buses

After a Cleveland judge ordered a woman to stand in public with a sign labeling herself an "idiot" for driving on the sidewalk to pass a school bus, city officials want to stiffen the penalties for such stunts.

The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reports that a city councilman on Monday introduced an ordinance that would upgrade failure to stop for school buses to a first-degree misdemeanor — punishable by up to six months in jail, a $1,000 fine and a license suspension.

It's currently a minor misdemeanor, punishable by a $500 fine.

A municipal judge made national headlines when she ordered 32-year-old Shena Hardin to stand in public with a poster that read: "Only an idiot would drive on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus."

These kind of people would STILL drive with no license. It would mean nothing to them. Same with the fine. It would go unpaid and still drive.

I love the idea of having someone stand in the town square with a sign. Around here how many tickets have been given recently for passing a school bus when their lights were on? PLENTY.

Make those idiots stand with a sign saying "I was too dumb to stop for the bus lights". Maybe that will teach them.

Or have them ride the bus as a monitor for a week or two a punishment. A week with screaming kids might make them more aware.

I'd like to take all the cellphone drivers and glue their phones to their heads and make them stand outside for a day with a sign that says "Help, I am talking and can't shut up even long enough to drive". That would make ME feel better.

who "walks down the center of the road like they own it"? I am confused by that statement? Are you saying they were wrong to do what they did to get that woman?

@ wired
I think you have to read a bit between the lines on that one. "they" I think that means the "people" in the picture.
