Billboards donated to curb Sandusky violence

Sandusky police commanders are taking their anti-crime message to the highways in hopes of making the community a safer place.

A donation from a local business, and a city resident's volunteer contributions, are helping the department spread its message to three busy locations in the city.

Lamar Advertising provided Sandusky police $6,000 for billboard space to launch a campaign focused on curbing crime.

Dubbed "Stop the Violence," the campaign aims to remind commuters about reporting crimes, and it provides them with contact information for local law enforcement or social service agencies.

The messaging comes as a result of recent violent crimes in Sandusky, including six murders since June.

"We formulated a message that we felt would promote involvement in the community in assisting the police department with some of the violence that has taken place over the past year," Sandusky assistant police Chief John Orzech said.

Orzech is asking community members to report all crimes, but particularly those involving domestic violence; child abuse; weapons; and burglaries and robberies.

"We want to make Sandusky a safer place for everyone, and focus on those who become victims to these incidents," he said. "Community involvement by the citizenry is essential to 'Stop the Violence.'"

yes, so every time a husband/wife gets in an argument (which all married people know this happens) their name will get printed in the sandusky register daily log for all the city to see their business. Ummm... no thanks.

Licorice Schtick

Every time a couple get in an arguement their names get printed? I don't think so. Only when they cause a disturbance or concern for a persons safety.

To billboard blight, though, "No, thanks."

While it's certainly commendable of this businesses and the local resident to donate funding and advertising space, I can't help but wonder if the money wouldn't be better spent elsewhere. Consider:

How many people CAN'T remember the number for 911?

How many people WOULDN'T call that number if they saw a crime in progress? (And of those who'd ignore the crime, how many would change their minds if only — oh, if ONLY! — they'd seen a billboard suggesting they do otherwise?)

How many people DON'T know crime, including violent crime, is up?

EXACTLY.

Advertising is used to spread the word about something not enough people know or care about. In this case, I'd much rather see the money spent on an added police patrol or the like! You know, something that would represent MATERIAL change rather than the warm fuzzies everybody is doubtless getting over these admittedly nice looking ads?

One more thing, though, since the donations apparently HAVE been spent/used, and these billboards ARE going to go up: Billboards are typically seen by people driving by. How fast can YOU read? Yep. Unless you stop to take notes, the only thing you're going to take from this message is the headline. That's not necessarily bad, but it does kind of make the rest of the message even more worthless...

Second Opinion

Completely ignores the root of the problem which is an extreme lack of a moral conscience. How about a billboard which reads: "God said, 'NO MURDERER can enter into heaven' ". Maybe this would have an influence even on abortionists.

People commit crimes because their evil. Attack the root of a plant and it won't grow, the same is true with the heart of man.

The failure of parents and the leaders in the Church have caused the schools to teach the children their liberal and secular humanist views along with situational ethics; and people wonder why we have crimes in our area that were seldom heard of before.

Does anyone else see anything in the article or the sign that has to do with abortion? I don't.

Also, I don't think that I would call 911 on anyone who had an abortion. It would be pointless, since it's legal.

Nice post, I agree.

luvblues2

Where did I state that I defend murder? I'm not gonna play your game...nuff said and we are done.

What does nuff mean? They need to put up a billboard to teach me the "new" English.

heaven-leigh

I think they meant "muff". As in "Muffy says.."

I see you were quick in clicking the 'Alert' button, I guess its easier than answering questions that stick to ones souls.

luvblues2

What makes you think it was me that hit the "Inappropriate?" link, S.O.? My first response to you was deleted as well. I chose to erase the moderator's deletion post and repost without the bombing of an abortion clinic. You have no clue on how I feel about abortion, none. You assume too much, including that I am female.

My point was that this is not an abortion topic, despite your effort to turn it into one.

"luv's new idea that she wont call 911 for abortion because its legal is a prime example."

Also, if i became pregnant, I certainly would have an abortion. I really have no clue where that baby would gestate for nine months let alone where it would come out, because I am a male. The whole idea of a male pushing out a baby is an unimaginable amount pain that I now have to erase from my mind.

Taxed Enough Already

If we had only known it would take a billboard to stop violence, we could have put them up before all the murders had happened and Sandusky would be safe. I am sorry I am not buying it. I say arm the innocent and let them take matters into their own hands. As far as the little children, unfortunately when their own parents won't protect them or are the ones harming them I am afraid a bill board will not save them either. I know the children and babies can't defend themselves they depend on JFS to do that for them. I bet if the local gal that's life was snuffed out with her two children, would have had a gun, her and the children would be alive today and that human excrement that is sitting in jail sucking our money would be dead, as it should be.

BEHAPPY

There was nothing profane, obscene, sexual or derogatory in there at all.

Second Opinion

Its been known for a long time that the moderators are biased, they constantly remove any post that causes one to consider their own morality. Notice they NEVER take down a post that supports the murder of babies.

luv's new idea that she wont call 911 for abortion because its legal is a prime example. Hitler made it "legal' to burn Christians and Jews in Germany, Well, babies are burned to death inside the womb every 90 seconds in the USA, but this paper thinks thats ok.

luvblues2

Hate to rock your world, S.O., but she is a he as stated above.

Oh my Lord..please pass the periods.

................................I had a few extras.

I think the objective of the billboard is to get people to report violence. How many times do we read in the papers about a violent death and neighbors say that they would hear loud arguments and such? We have a responsibility to report what we see and hear when the words are threatening, when a child is being beatened (not disciplined), etc. If the billboard gets one person to make the necessary phone call, then it is worth it.

BEHAPPY

HUH?? And we wonder what is wrong with this world.....wonder no longer....."REALBIGSHOT" just gave us the answer.
GOD help us......................................

heaven-leigh

Hahhaaa!

There you go again

Maybe REALBIGSHOT comment should be posted on the billboard. Shows a need to push for students to stay in school as a way to reduce crime.

BEHAPPY

SR, why did you delete my first post? All I said was people here were more than welcome to come up with better ideas....what's wrong with that?? The things I see here and THAT got deleted??
