A Cleveland Municipal Court judge ordered 32-year-old Shena Hardin to serve the highly public sentence for one hour Tuesday and Wednesday for the Sept. 11 citation.

She arrived bundled up against the 34-degree cold, puffing a cigarette and wearing head phones as passing vehicles honked.

Satellite TV trucks were on hand to stream the event live near downtown Cleveland.

The sign read: "Only an idiot would drive on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus."

Hardin refused to comment, as did her mother, who watched from a parked car.

Hardin's license was suspended for 30 days and she was ordered to pay $250 in court costs.

Lisa Kelley, whose 9-year-old daughter boards the bus which Hardin had been passing on the sidewalk, said the sentence fit the crime.

"She's an idiot, just like her sign says," Kelley said as she watched Hardin lean against a fence, her head down and her eyes hidden by dark glasses.

"She did this almost every day last year," Kelley said. "She won't stop laughing. She's not remorseful, she laughed at every court appearance. She's still laughing, so she needs to be humiliated like this."

Kelley said she was only sorry the woman was standing in the cold and not the rain or snow.

A message seeking comment was left for Hardin's attorneys.

Bill Lipold, 37, who works nearby in the blue-collar neighborhood of older homes and factories, yelled "Why do you hate kids" to Hardin.

He hopes the punishment works. "How else are you going to stop her from doing it again? She really didn't show remorse for her action after being caught, so you've got to try something," he asked.

With two schools located with two blocks of the location and busy commuter traffic, the area can be risky for youngsters walking to class, Lipold said.

Congrats to the judge who doled out this punishment, I'll wager she NEVER drives around a school bus again. She should also not be allowed to have her cell phone or any other electronic devices.

She should have NO cell phone, NO Ipod, NO smokes. She should be standing there with a flashing light and waving the sign wildly. I wish they would take her license away for a LONG time. (although these kinds of people drive with or without a license) THis is what is wrong with so many of today. I call it the "all about me" syndrome. They think they are more important than anyone else.

Just take her license. No need to do all that other stuff posted on here. You people just make up laws to suit you. Enough already!

Obamaphone...you on disability, low income, you gon shine up.

No government phone says she works for the police department so sorry to bus the obamaphone garbage when it comes to some group of people.

She did this every day for almost a year?
Shows absolutely no remorse and thinks it's funny.. well..
Sentence should have been do this every day for an hour for a year, rain or shine!

She should also be made to scrub a few school busses & maybe break some of those expensively manicured nails. THEN she wou;dn't be laughing. All about ME ME ME.

Seen it All

The judge was not happy with this woman! She will be standing out there with her today, to make sure she takes her punishment a little more seriously! Way to go Judge! :) And I think the fine for passing a stopped school bus should be more like $5,000, not $250.. that would wipe the smile off of this lady's face!

Sweet! Glad to see the piece O p**p on the Today Show. That female needs shamed. Self-centered person. Sadly typical of so many Americans. To the judge - thank you!

No, sorry, this WON'T be the last time this idiot drives around a schoolbus or does something equally stupid. She thinks this is hilarious. Wonder how hard she'd be laughing if she'd KILLED a child in her all-fired hurry to get wherever it was it was so urgent she get!

I'm not big on making traffic fines super high, but maybe we ought to make them cumulative. Pass a schoolbus illegally once, it's $250 (provided no one gets hurt). Twice? $500. Three times? $1,000. You'd be surprised how fast doubling like that adds up! And if you don't pay, you go directly to jail.

This moron doubtless went to get her nails done after her "sentence" was served. While I also extend kudos to the judge for creative sentencing (as well as her sentiment that the misdemeanor punishment just wasn't sufficient), this isn't about the judge. It's about the idiot holding the sign saying she's an idiot.
