Township firefighters responded to 1,840 ambulance runs and almost 450 fire calls through Oct. 31, a significant jump compared to the first 10 months of 2011.

"At this point, there seems to be no one reason for the increase," Perkins fire Chief Keith Wohlever said.

Firefighters are blazing through funds to cover the surge.
