The late Audrey and Bill (Mac) Mackiewicz were World War II veterans who continued their service to their country throughout their lives.
With quivering voice, Audrey spoke at countless Memorial Day services, telling poignant stories about her Huron High School classmates who gave their lives for our country during the war she served in.
Throughout her life, she spent tireless hours working with veterans to help them with a myriad of issues, giving of her time and energy to help others. Mac, on the other hand, was the behind-the-scenes support who could always be counted on to help throughout the community: Water Festival, Boosters, AMVETS -- if you needed help, they were there.
Audrey liked to tell about "Decoration Day" in her youth (later changed to Memorial Day) when Huron students would gather arm loads of spring flowers and place them in water-filled troughs in front of the school. The students marched to the McMillan Cemetery on Main Street to place the flowers on graves of veterans.
Memorial Day will not be the same in Huron without this dynamic couple marching in step to lay a wreath in honor of those gone before.
Join me in a salute to these outstanding veterans who were tireless supporters of our country and our community; they will be missed.
