Obama wins

President Barack Obama has won Ohio again, capturing the swing state after a hard-fought battle with Republican Mitt Romney.

Obama, who also won Ohio in 2008, claims the swing state's 18 electoral votes.

Both sides poured major time and resources into the battleground state that has been among the nation's most contested in recent presidential elections. It was considered pivotal for both.

No Republican has won the White House without Ohio. The last president elected despite losing Ohio was Democrat John F. Kennedy in 1960.

Ohio has been site of much of the advertising spending by the campaigns and outside supporters. It also was among the most-visited states by the campaigns.

In addition to Ohio, Obama captured battleground states Iowa and Colorado on his way to the 270 electoral votes he needed.

Obama will again be dealing with a divided Congress. Democrats maintained control of the Senate and Republicans likely will again control the House. Among the most pressing matters is the so-called fiscal cliff of tax hikes and spending cuts scheduled to hit in January. Economists have warned that if they aren't averted, the nation could face another recession.

PROVE your allegation of "Obamaphones".

Strange...all the tears here. The man won fair & square. Yet not many years ago watched the documentary "Bush Family Fortunes." That was done by a British gentelman. I liked it when the Floridian judge got mad with the truth, then he had the interviewer removed. Too many vain weak people.

Mr. Axelrod done good.

The simple fact is: A national version of the Chicago Democrat political machine got out the vote and won.

If crony capitalism, featherbedding, ghost payrolls, corrupt judges, political payoffs, et al, is good enough for Chicago, it's obviously good enough for the U.S.

Study Chicago-style politics to help you understand the U.S. under Mr. Obama.

Enjoy your man-crush; he’s a puppet for the real masters.

On the other hand, Mr. Obama is a mere lightweight compared to Boss Daley.

As his reward, his handlers let him play golf, glad hand and enjoy the good life while playing president.

BTW: Chicago and IL are financially broke. IL has the lowest credit rating of any state in the U.S. due in part to high taxes, borrowing and excessive spending.

Underfunding of IL public pensions (45% funded) is the worst in the country.

John Harville

@Contango. As it seems you've already lived in virtually every location on Earth and experienced everything that can be experienced, please regale us with your adventures with Chicago politics. When you finish, and with traces of Boss Daley's 1968 tear gas still in my memory, and with a large family based in Chicago, Gary, Milwaukee, and with two cousins who retired after 30 and 35 years as Cook County deputies, and with an aunt who was a stalwart Republican 'graveyard recruiter' for 30 years from the early 40s - then we'll talk about Chicago politics.

@ John Harville:

You were a Yippie?

So Mr. Axelrod is not part of the Chicago Democrat Party political machine?

I know, I heard the story that it doesn't exist; neither does the La Cosa Nostra.

John Harville

@ Contango. I win again... you had to resort to namecalling. Yippies were not present. I was a sedate midwestern almost-college student spending some summer time with family. An observer, not a participant, unfortunately. Actually the Mayor's machine died that week. If the Machine remained intact, how do you explain Nixon 68 and 72 and Reagan 80 and 84? And Bush 2000 and 2004? Or that Dems have had the White House only 16 out of the 44 years since Chicago '68? Once again you bluster without the facts to back your blow.
But I thought you once said you lived in Chicago... no?

@ John Harville:

Abbie Hoffman and others of the Chicago Seven were not "Yippies"? You don't know history.

Surprising that the Dem Party survived after Vietnam, but obviously the people forget about the dangers of trusting govt.

Yep lived in the Chicago NW suburbs for over two decades and often worked downtown.

Locally, "The Machine" is alive and well. How do you explain decades of Dem city rule?

Do you understand the duties of precinct captains?

Pure and simple:

Mr. Axelrod went back to the playbook and the Dems "got out the vote" on a national level. An excellent piece of politicin’

I’ve seen it all before - in Chicago.

Julie R.

I'm kind of surprised (but not really) how angry people are over this. I could tell even one of the news commentators on TV was trying to keep his anger in check when he reported the final results that Obama won.

This country really IS divided and as the saying goes --- a house divided shall soon fall.

I agree.

John Harville

@Julie.. puhleese! Lincoln said "a house divided against itself cannot stand". And yet a country at war with itself still managed to 'stand'. There was great division before the sinking of the Lusitania brought us into WWI. There was even greater division during the Great Depression and the Recovery. There was great division before Pearl Harbor hurled us into WWII. Still there is great division over VietNam and the killing of 58,000 Americans.
And yet, here we 'stand'.

Julie R.

@ John Harville: Lincoln didn't make that up. He got it from the Bible.

"Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; a house divided against itself will fall."

John Harville

@Julie. Which chapter? Which translation. A modern translation from the Greek in Matthew and Mark may be more indicative for our times: "A town or family splintered by feuding will fall apart."
It would be imperative on us, then, to stop feuding here. It's up to all of us to find a common goal.

"A George divided against himself cannot stand!"

--George Costanza

"George is gettin' upset!"

Darwin's choice

These are possibly the 5 best sentences you'll ever read
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

John Harville

@Darwin. Should we assume these 'pearls' are yours? Or do you just want to post someone else's 'wisdom' as your own.
Try this - from the Bible: "To whom much is given, much will be expected." Or this one from Jesus: "I command you to love one another as I have loved you." Or, again Jesus: "Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar' and unto God that which is God's". "Whatever you do to the least of these (hungry, thirsty, naked, ill) you do unto me." Whaddaya know... Jesus again.

John, Republicans conveniently ignore the Bible when it doesn't fit their agenda, yet consider themselves Christians. Reeks of hypocrisy to me.

John is the one who is spinning the Bible to his agenda.
He is making it as if Christ would have approved more of the society which has resulted from decades of being force-fed the Left Wing paradigm (thru school and the majority of Hollywood)..rather than the society we used to have before all of that.

() "To whom much is given, much will be expected" does not equate to willingly voting to give your money to (Democrat) programs that are failing both economically and socially. That would fall below the expectation being referred to.

() "Love one another" does not equate to paying more in taxes but never making sure that the money is going to good use and actually helping people (as opposed to just further enabling their downfall).

() "Whatever you do to the least of these, you do unto me" DOES suggest that the help which you give should be responsible and productive help. Most people who claim to be "good" based on paying more in taxes, have never lifted a finger to physically help the poor. They are nothing more than sofa quarterbacks.

Darwin's choice

What the matter harville, can't accept them, so defer! Doesn't matter who's "pearls" they are, you cannot deny them as true! Twist them into a BS line for obama, azzhat.

google this> "Tax Cuts Don't Create Jobs"

Take your pick of who to read.

And yet Romney wanted to abolish Roe vs. Wade. Do you have any idea of the number of people that would need welfare if abortions ended today? But then the Republicans complain that too many people are getting handouts. Republicans want it both ways and pick and choose the "facts" that support their arguments.

Oh? Funny, history shows differently. When there was no abortion, we didn't have these kinds of problems because people understood that they would actually have to raise a child if they put themselves into the position of chancing a pregnancy.

It comes down to whether unregulated Abortion is (as well as a number of other Democrat positions are, in general) helping or hurting (acting as another enabler for the irresponsible mindset of late).

Here's the deal-- the GOP is going to have to do some major restructuring to ever get to the White House again. Stay out of women's private parts, stay out of who is allowed to marry whom, keep your religion to yourself, develop tolerance for your fellow American's who don't have the same skin color as yourselves. You see, Latino's, blacks, women, gays, atheists--we are all combined a much larger group than you Ward Cleaver's. Time to move into the 21st century and quit passing judgment. Oh, and start distancing yourselves from the teatardians...they are really dragging you down.

@ meowmix:

So the Repubs should just agree with the Democrats? No need for the Repubs huh?

One party rule - no democracy.

Agreed that the minorities and others have been taught by the Progressives that: You can have the good life paid for by others - just vote!

Why work when the State will provide all that you need? Just quit.

Socialism is a great system until it runs out of other people's money. See: Greece and Argentina.

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy. Tytler"
The Tea party is not in charge, The two partys are. Who is dragging who down? Your partys have failed and are creating a dependent state, If your survival depends on others for substinance YOU are the weight holding the rest of us back.

John Harville

"Tytler does admit that there are individual exceptions to the rule, and that he is ready to allow "that this form of government is the best adapted to produce, though not the most frequent, yet the most striking, examples of virtue in individuals," paradoxically because a "democratic government opposes more impediments to disinterested patriotism than any other form. To surmount these, a pitch of virtue is necessary which, in other situations, where the obstacles are less great and numerous, is not called in to exertion. The nature of a republican government gives to every member of the state an equal right to cherish views of ambition, and to aspire to the highest offices of the commonwealth" -- I can quote Tytler, too.

As you can quote him then you can also see where we are heading with a dependent citizenry. The Citzens will slowly give up more freedoms and rights for material goods to sustain themselves till they can no longer sustain themselves without the Government who will take libertys with its citizens. We see this now with its ability to kill its own citizens without trial, This will be expanded on by future administrations. Power corrupts, Absolute power corrupts absolutly.

John Harville

yeah... Marsh... I CAN see where we are headed. We are one of the exceptions of which he speaks where the Democracy has the greatest potential to inspire greatness.
Read again the passage I posted - but don't read it through your hatred and overwhelming desire to be proven right in your opinion that Obama's election has doomed the nation.

I do not hate at all, I just see where we are going. Its not Obama's fault alone, The last 50 years have led up to this point. The have nots overwhelm the haves and do not care what it takes to get it from them, In turn it will continue to the point where we make greece look like disneyland. BTW we are not inspiring anyone now, We are seen as a warmongers and a bunch of lazy idiots by the rest of the world.
