Obama wins

President Barack Obama has won Ohio again, capturing the swing state after a hard-fought battle with Republican Mitt Romney.
Associated Press
Nov 6, 2012

Obama, who also won Ohio in 2008, claims the swing state's 18 electoral votes.

Both sides poured major time and resources into the battleground state that has been among the nation's most contested in recent presidential elections. It was considered pivotal for both.

No Republican has won the White House without Ohio. The last president elected despite losing Ohio was Democrat John F. Kennedy in 1960.

Ohio has been site of much of the advertising spending by the campaigns and outside supporters. It also was among the most-visited states by the campaigns.

In addition to Ohio, Obama captured battleground states Iowa and Colorado on his way to the 270 electoral votes he needed.

Obama will again be dealing with a divided Congress. Democrats maintained control of the Senate and Republicans likely will again control the House. Among the most pressing matters is the so-called fiscal cliff of tax hikes and spending cuts scheduled to hit in January. Economists have warned that if they aren't averted, the nation could face another recession.

Kimo

Take the Bush Iraq war and Bush tax cuts out of the debt and it would be a lot easier to manage.

Obama inherited those two gems; denial does not solve any problems.

Randy_Marsh

Kimo
Denial doesnt take care of the problems either. We are on our way over a fiscal cliff because spending has continued and nothing is being done about it. Facts are these, The spending cannot last forever and somthing has got to give, It will during the next 4 years and then you and me will see a re-enactment of Greece when the gove starts cutting off the freebies.

shucks

Kimo
Yes, the Repubs don't want to talk about that.

Blaming bush only last so long, Obama has done nothing to get rid of the debt. Like all of bush policys he has just expanded it. Get ready to pay more and see your money funneled into QE3.

The Repubs put the USA in a deep hole.

Randy_Marsh

so keep digging? That isnt a very good fiscal model and the blame only last for 4 years, Its Obama's baby now. "I promise to cut the deficit in half by the end of my first term" They spent 10 trillion, Obama spent 5 trillion. By the time of the end of his second term they project 20 trillion, Who is going to get us out of THAT hole?

shucks

marsh
Don't twist my hyperbole.
You got it the first time.

sanduskysteve

The debt is created by each year's deficit. But balancing the budget won't reduce the debt - only the deficit.

Randy_Marsh

Dont worry, We arent going to lose the debt. The spending will continue and you will have to pay they are making sure of that. Austerity is comming whether you want it or not, The spending has to stop.

Donald Trump is really ticked off. Donald is now suggesting a revolution. Who will join him? I won't. The Republicans have only themselves to blame for picking somebody like rich man Romney. Romney lost in his home state. What does that tell you about Romney? If the rich corporations and rich people would have picked somebody like Ron Paul and/or Gary Johnson who would have represented all of the people, then maybe the Republicans would have won. The Republicans nominated some rich person to represent the elite, better than thou people who would ignore the working class and common people, the other 99%.

Why? Isnt he as a american citizen allowed to express himself without fear of being hassled? Its sentences such as yours that scare those of us that know history.

Centauri

Maybe SanduskySteve is thinking about that militia group up in Michigan who the Federal government said wanted to overthrow the government? I look for Holder to stage more raids against the citizens. I look for Holder to start arresting people for comments posted on the various forums. Obama should get rid of Holder.

sanduskysteve

I believe what you wrote was he is calling for a revelution. A little of a riot than an organization to protest - at least the last revolution was that way.

John Harville

Timothy McVeigh "expressed himself".
Occupy Wall Street had the right of 'expression' and 'redress' without fear of being hassled?
David Koresh "expressed himself".

Contango

So you'd be OK with putting outspoken political opponents in jail?

Randy_Marsh

Sanduskysteve
From what i have read he said "March on washington to right the wrongs" I didnt hear "Riot". I have heard that from Obama supporters though if he didnt win. That freedom of speech thing really bothers the left doesnt it?

John Harville

Left not bothered by any freedoms... as long as exercisers don't consider the freedom 'carte blanche' with no responsibility attached.
Example: Hamilton and Burr exercised their rights to keep and bear arms. Hamilton died. Burr died in infamy.
Example: First Amendment ALSO gives freedom "PEACABLY" to assemble and petition government for redress of grievances. Somehow "riot in the streets" doesn't fit peacable. No matter, the peaceable Occupy movement was driven out.
For the Right... example Fireland Patriots... First Amendment only applies to those who agree with them - as their leader said.

verdict

@ John Harville. I call hypocrisy on that one.
The Left consistently tries to twist the 1st amendment to fit their agenda in regards to censorship of prayer (and whatnot) in public places. They tout the "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" but they consistently trounce the second part..which states "nor prohibit the free exercise thereof."

I watched a guy start ranting during a recent State Senate proceeding in Hawaii when they opened with a prayer. He stood up and tried to talk over the speaker and would not stop until he spotted someone coming towards him. They asked him to leave and he refused, so they physically removed him.
Explain to me why this guy could not just wait until he was called on to speak and, at that time, address his concern in a less disturbing manner?

Don't try to sell us on The Left is "all for freedom." Most of them do not even fully understand freedom, it would seem. They have a conniption fit if someone says a prayer in a public place. Such are delusional and of an unstable mind..when they assert that saying a prayer in a public place equates to establishing a State Religion.
Has America ever forced anyone to obey any religion's doctrine? No? Then "Whhyy soo SERIOUSSss!?"

John Harville

@Verdict I call BS on that. "nor prohibit free expression thereof". If you have to stand in a group in a room where a Muslim begins a chant, is that person exercising 'free expression' and will you stand quietly?
"free expression" means you or I or anyone is free to express our religion but not to force our 'free expression' of religion on any others.
I don't know anyone who has a coniption if someone says a prayer in a public place unless they preface it with 'bow our heads and pray' or insist chldren say a prayer before lunch (I know some fundamentalist Protestants who got really upset when their Catholic teacher had her students recite a Hail Mary before going to lunch).
In brief... you can pray anytime anywhere... and a Muslim can pray in front of his mosque...right? Has anyone ever stopped anyone from praying before a meal in a restaurant.
Has America ever forced anyone to obey any religion's doctrine? YES. In 1956 when the motto changed from E Pluribus Unum to "In God We Trust" during the Red Scare.

verdict

How does an inscription on a coin force you to obey a religious doctrine? It does not do so by any stretch of the imagination.
You are only proving my point.
And I was right. You do not see it even as you, yourself, are doing it.

You are making it like "I would ask you to join me in prayer" equates to "You are hereby order to.." Do you not have the presence of mind to merely take it as "Join us for a moment, in the same spirit" regardless of not believing in their God?

If, by "I call BS," you are referring to the story..I can link the YouTube video of the Hawaii local news report. Atheist commenters harped on it, actually..as if it helped their cause somehow.

John Harville

"we need to have a revolution".
Now "Donald Trump has deleted some of the Twitter tirade he posted following President Barack Obama's re-election..."

Randy_Marsh

"Revolution" was ron pauls campaign slogan, So you want to arrest him as well? Thats just begging for a tolitarian government. You people wonder why the rest of us think the left is scary?

John Harville

There is 'revolution' by legislation and 'revolution' by "marching on Washington and take back our country"
But one needs some finesse to understand the finer points between revolving and revolting...

Randy_Marsh

John
You are arguing against your own rights to express yourself, That doesnt sound all that smart considering they are YOUR rights as well.

John Harville

Actually I'm arguing FOR my right to express myself - RESPONSIBLY. I'm arguing for the same right for you. I know not if you have children, but suppose you do and your 15yo son called you wife a gdfstupidb! Would you allow that as his right of free expression?
Every right has a responsibility or two or three. You have the right to own a gun, but if you use it to kill another person you will be responsible for the injury/death of that person.
Again, Tim McVeigh had the right to express himself.
As a famous justice once said (wish I could remember who) said something to the effect "your right ends and mine begins when you fist encounters my nose".
The First Amendment says CONGRESS shall make no law ABRIDGING speech - no prior censorship (you can't keep me from saying something because you think it will cause a riot) - but makes no prohibition on punishing the consequences of such speech.
It's the same here. You can post anything. But the moderators can remove it without 'abridging' your right to say it.
The First only prohibits CONGRESS from abridging - it says nothing about the states..
Why do I bother?

Randy_Marsh

John
There are nuts everywhere calling for this or that, Should it be censored. I dont think so. Sanduskysteve wanted him to be locked up indefinatly without bail for voicing a opinion, Do you agree? Seriously, Think about it. Throw him in jail for speaking a opinion?
Dont get me wrong if you hurt others prosecute them, Give them a fair trial and work from there. This drone kill, Indefinate incarceration and the federal government can do anything is pleases crap is going way to far.

verdict

John. "Veterans for Ron Paul" had their "March on Washington" demonstration and it was merely a verbal demonstration. Very shortly after, Obama signed HR 347 which effectively outlawed protests in Washington, D.C.

sanduskysteve

Actually what was said here is that he is calling for a revolution. That's a little more strong than marching on washington. Freedom of speech does not bother me - but there are limits to it. Try to yell FIRE in a theater and see how well your freedom of speech works out.

At least 4 yrs from now if everything falls apart, they'll have nothing to blame but themselves. How about reading what Obama's tax plans are now that he was re-elected. The associated press put out a piece now that they accomplished getting him re-elected that discusses his plan. A plan that will hit every middle class worker that has a 401K or an IRA that receives growth from stock dividends. You see, the press hid these lies about only the rich being taxed more until after the election, how very sweet of them. I advise you to reinvest your money in something such as muni bonds unless you want to lose a good portion of your retirement income.

Dear Mr. President and members of Congress: As you all well know, we are headed for an end-of-year fiscal cliff, when the Budget Control Act of 2011 is set to kick in: the end of last year’s temporary payroll tax cuts (resulting in a 2% tax increase for workers), the end of certain tax breaks for businesses, shifts in the alternative minimum tax that would take a larger bite, the end of the tax cuts from 2001-2003, and the beginning of taxes related to the Affordable Care Act. At the same time, the spending cuts y'all agreed upon as part of the debt ceiling deal of 2011 will begin to go into effect. According to Barron's, over 1,000 government programs - including the defense budget and Medicare are in line for "deep, automatic cuts." But you know all this. Right? RIGHT??!!

What could y'all do? Three possible options, and again, y'all know these.
#1) Y'all could let the current policy scheduled for the beginning of 2013 – which features a number of tax increases and spending cuts that are expected to weigh heavily on growth and possibly drive the economy back into a recession – go into effect. The plus side: the deficit, as a percentage of GDP, would be cut in half.
#2) Y'all could cancel some or all of the scheduled tax increases and spending cuts, which would add to the deficit (boo!!) and increase the odds that the United States could face a crisis similar to that which is occurring in Europe. The flip side of this, of course, is that the United States' debt will continue to grow (double boo!!)
#3) Y'all could take a middle course, opting for an approach that would address the budget issues to a limited extent, but that would have a more modest impact on growth.

Is there any hope or prayer y'all might actually consider the 'C' word? Say it with me now . . . COMPROMISE! I know those of you who are Republicans want to cut spending and avoid raising taxes, while those of you who are Democrats are looking for a combination of spending cuts and tax increases. Although you both *SAY* you want to avoid the fiscal cliff, I don't know I've heard any of you utter the 'C' word the last three years. So what are y'all going to do? Wait until the eleventh hour?

The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that if y'all take the middle ground – extending the Bush-era tax cuts but cancelling the automatic spending cuts – the result, in the short term, would be modest growth but no major economic hit. If the current laws slated for 2013 go into effect, the impact on the economy could be dramatic. Let me repeat that word: DRAMATIC! While the combination of higher taxes and spending cuts would reduce the deficit by an estimated $560 billion, the CBO estimates that the policies set to go into effect would cut gross domestic product (GDP) by four percentage points in 2013, sending the economy into a recession. At the same time, it predicts unemployment would rise by almost a full percentage point, with a loss of about two million jobs. A Wall St. Journal article from May 16, 2012 estimates the following impact in dollar terms: “In all, according to an analysis by J.P. Morgan economist Michael Feroli, $280 billion would be pulled out of the economy by the sunsetting of the Bush tax cuts; $125 million from the expiration of the Obama payroll-tax holiday; $40 million from the expiration of emergency unemployment benefits; and $98 billion from Budget Control Act spending cuts. In all, the tax increases and spending cuts make up about 3.5% of GDP, with the Bush tax cuts making up about half of that, according to the J.P. Morgan report.” Do I even need to remind all of you that amid an already-fragile recovery and elevated unemployment, the economy is not in a position to avoid this type of shock? The cost of your collective indecision is likely to have an effect on the economy before 2013 even begins. The CBO anticipates that a lack of resolution by y'all will cause households and businesses to begin changing their spending in anticipation of the changes, possible reducing GDP by a full half-percent in the second half of 2012.

Having said this, I'm well aware the term “cliff” indicates an immediate disaster at the beginning of 2013, the impact of the changes - while destructive over a full year - will be gradual at first. And I realize y'all have that ace up your sleeves that most people don't know exists or don't remember: *YOU* can act to change laws retroactively after the deadline. As a result, the fiscal cliff won't necessarily be an impediment to growth even if y'all don't address the issue until after 2013 has already begun. But given the crud y'all have drug us through the past 4 years, we're all raw from your combined "Rule by Constipation". So please, give us an early surprise Christmas gift and do something positive for a change: COMPROMISE!

wiredmama222

Let us all just relax...take a deep breath and hope that Boehner and company realize that Bush really screwed up. That making those tax breaks for his rich friends got us in this mess to begin with and they must go...so no, no. They are NOT getting those breaks. They are PAYING their taxes and some more to be added to assist in this time of need.

In fact, they might consider that their wallets will feel the taxes quite a bit in the near future.

As for the rest, we are going to start collecting back on those loans to the banks and those bail outs to the lenders....AIG, etc. They need to begin paying back.

We are leaving medicare and medicaid alone for now. We are bringing the troops home and considering reopening bases right here on our own shores to fortify our own shorelines. East and West Coast and perhaps the North and South as well. That can create some much needed jobs eliminated with the base closing by Clinton.

There will be more to come later.

BTW: The rumor is that Rep. Pelosi will lose her position as House Minority Leader over the election results.

OSUBuckeye59

@Contango,

Both Speaker Boehner and President Obama have publicly staked their claims, but in the end, they both have to agree to a compromise. If Boehner says he's offering to work with Obama, then that means he better be prepared to compromise. So the question is not if Obama will compromise, the question is if *BOTH* Speaker Boehner and President Obama will compromise?

wiredmama222

I hope Speaker Boehner DOES, this time, actually willingly compromise as will Obama, to get things done. Because frankly, at the first sign of ANY of the signs of the Senate and House "melt-downs" of last year, where impasses were done for the sake of impasses that were done just because of "party politics" there are going to be 'grass root' recall petitions for key players who stagnate the government operations this time.

We, the people, are getting sick and tired of watching this government freeze up over political party politics that stalls this government time and time again while we suffer out here because our ELECTED officials fail to act. They are elected to act on OUR behalves and when they get to Washington they forget who they work for. They do not work for their parties, they work for us.

This time they shall be reminded of that fact.

OSUBuckeye59

@wiredmama222,

Couldn't agree with you more. Tough part is that once the Senator or Representative gets elected into office, they get all the perks of the office, and not just the pay but the retirement package. In the private sector when an employee doesn't perform to expectations or doesn't successfully meet the agreed-to objectives, there are repercussions, up to and including termination. In Congress, how do we really measure performance? A Senator or Representative can say they worked on a committee or introduced specific legislation but unless the elected official is found to have committed some criminal offense or were caught canoodling with someone underage or other than their spouse, the elected official usually gets re-elected. Again I ask: where's the accountability?

I'm not advocating a system where the process makes it such that an elected official could be ousted from office so quickly that nobody would want to run for office, but there has got to be a better system than what we have today where our elected officials all seem to cater to their party and lobbyists. We the People cannot afford our Country to be driven off the fiscal cliff.

verdict

To whom it may concern:
Obama and Romney have the same foreign policy (more war) and the same monetary policy (more power and secrecy for the Fed Reserve to collapse the dollar).
This race should have been between Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich, to determine the greater of two goods. I guess we can thank every person who vomited lies upon the threads of Ron Paul bloggers from 2007-2012, to smear him (as well as those who smeared Kucinich in the 2008 elections).

We tried to tell you many, many times during our unyielding blog campaign for Ron Paul. And you chose to believe, and recite, the smear campaign..when even a modest amount of research would have proven the "Ron Paul is a racist" and "Ron Paul wants to dismantle the Government" claims were just as untruthful as they were ridiculously unrealistic.
Just as unrealistic as "Romney will ban Abortion in 2012," even tho he would've had no means available to do so.

I imagine that it will take at least 4 more years of blogging to get a majority of voters to see how Rand Paul 2016 is the best hope for a comeback for America. Hopefully you will not do, from 2012-2016 with Rand Paul bloggers, as you have done with the Ron Paul bloggers from 2007-2012.

Hopefully, from here on out, you will fully investigate all claims. Assuming we still have elections by 2016..or a Constitution, for that matter. Economic collapse (whether real or perceived) has a way of changing peoples and nations, ya know. Have you supporting things you swore you never would, and previously dismissed as even ridiculous to suggest it could ever happen.

Keep this post in mind on the road to 2016. And be sure to watch Obama's actions just as closely as we would have watched Romney's actions. Don't do the same thing you did from 2008-2012..which was to kick back and pay little to no attention until election year, when it was too late to catch up on all the info.

John. I said "of substance." Not vague generalities.

Ok, I will bite. Technically, Libertarians are what Republicans used to be. When he says "taking our country back" he means, not just the country but, taking the Republican party back..to it's roots, before the Democrats pushed it into it's current state.
By that, I mean that the more Democrats pushed for centralized planning and power, the more the Repubicans had to push back with the same.

Mandate... won 8 of the 9 must-win 'battleground' states as declared by the Republicans. Amazingly, some high-ranking Republicans are saying this could signal the end of the Republican Party - was THAT the intent of the Tea Party? hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

big_d

All you people reading this who decry Obama and the fact that nothing gets done in DC, should tell the elected Republicans that this is how it is for the next four years, get to working with your president, and tackle some of the issues instead of letting the people who voted for you down!

BTW Donald Trump is the Dems secret weapon, : )

verdict

Uh, I heard the Senate Democrats have killed, on arrival, every bill (over 30 bills now) that the House passed, since 2010, on jobs and the economy.
Wake up. From the looks of it, the Democrats have been working on collapsing the economy ever since they got control of Congress in 2006..to finish what they started with their Housing Crisis during the Clinton years.

You can stop now. We know you hate Capitalism and "the Zionists..."
We know you are pushing the Cloward-Piven strategy. We get it.
Maybe we should just sit back and not vote and let you have at it. The only way you will ever learn is if we let you have your way, so you can finally watch it collapse as we predicted it would.

John Harville

@verdict. Uh. You heard wrong. The Republicans in the Senate invoked the filibuster 159 times 2009-the present to keep bills from receiving an upordown vote.
Wake up! Mitch McConnell set the Number One Priority of the 112th Senate to make sure Obama didn't get a second term.
From the first filibuster in 1919 until 1966 the filibuster was used only four times. Since 1960 there have been 874 filibusters - 371 since January 2009.

verdict

@John Harville. Nothing in your post negates what I said.
I am saying that Democrat Senators killed House Republicans' job/economic bills upon arrival in the Senate..and you are saying Republican Senators filibustered Democrat Senators' anti-American, anti-Capitalist Cloward-Piven strategy recklessness : P

Both are true.

Actually, he plays both sides of that fence..and plays everyone else, as well. Nothing but a player. Good luck with that.

Ya know... your comment is lonely without its 'removed' inspiration substituting an Islamic word...

Ya, did you see the movie "Dreams from my REAL Father?". It shows more about Obama that you will ever want to hear!

"Dude. Ron Paul's Audit the Fed bill passed the House in a landslide (with bipartisan support)." Good comment. I will post a couple of links so that the people will see it. Some people refuse to look at the truth even if you show it to them.

@verdict
Wed, 11/07/2012 - 8:45pm "Obama and Romney have the same foreign policy (more war) and the same monetary policy (more power and secrecy for the Fed Reserve to collapse the dollar). This race should have been between Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich, to determine the greater of two goods. I guess we can thank every person who vomited lies upon the threads of Ron Paul bloggers from 2007-2012, to smear him (as well as those who smeared Kucinich in the 2008 elections)." Another good comment. The corporations, super rich and the powers that be didn't want Ron Paul or Dennis Kucinich. Imagine a Republican and Democrat working together to solve this nation's problems. The propaganda machine run by the corporations has fooled the people into believing BS. The people have been brain washed. I sure hope that Obama will not start another war based on lies with the help of the CIA. Which parents, wives, husbands, siblings and others want to send their loved ones off to a war overseas and have them come back in caskets all because of a war based again on lies? In the 1960s, there was no internet and news sources outside of this country could not be accessed. Now with the internet, people have the choice (if they want to) to read news sources from outside of this country's propaganda machine.

http://reason.com/blog/2012/07/2...
"But Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) pointed out that the House vote on the bill comes on the same day that the Washington Post reported that the New York Fed "did not communicate in key meetings with top regulators that British bank Barclays had admitted to Fed staffers that it was rigging LIBOR,” the index which sets interest rates worldwide."

wiredmama222

I would think that the biggest thing to come out of the run for President in this election is that the Republican party needs to learn that America has changed. They can no longer afford to listen to the beat of the old drum but need to learn to face the TRUE America which up to now they have failed to recognize. If anything lost them this election it was that. They failed to put their fingers on the pulse of this country and it cost them the election because they were too busy trying to figure out what America is NOW. They missed it by a mile and a half. I hope, instead of listening to their OLD advisors, they take on new and fresh minded ones who tell them the TRUTH about what America really has become, not what they THINK it is. Perhaps then, and only then, will they win the Presidency back. Otherwise, in four years, they will face still another defeat at the hands of the Democrats again...this time it may be by another Clinton.

I watched a lil bit of Rushy going meltdown today. That guy better go Dr. shopping again for his pain meds before he has a heart attack. LOL.

PS. I didn't vote for Obama or Romney, but I sure like to watch Rushy's BP spike to the point he almost passes out.

There you go again

Democrats, your prayers have been answered--Obama phones for everyone!

John Harville

PROVE your allegation of "Obamaphones".

KURTje

Strange...all the tears here. The man won fair & square. Yet not many years ago watched the documentary "Bush Family Fortunes." That was done by a British gentelman. I liked it when the Floridian judge got mad with the truth, then he had the interviewer removed. Too many vain weak people.

Contango

Mr. Axelrod done good.

The simple fact is: A national version of the Chicago Democrat political machine got out the vote and won.

If crony capitalism, featherbedding, ghost payrolls, corrupt judges, political payoffs, et al, is good enough for Chicago, it's obviously good enough for the U.S.

Study Chicago-style politics to help you understand the U.S. under Mr. Obama.

Enjoy your man-crush; he’s a puppet for the real masters.

On the other hand, Mr. Obama is a mere lightweight compared to Boss Daley.

As his reward, his handlers let him play golf, glad hand and enjoy the good life while playing president.

http://www.bookrags.com/Boss:_Ri...

BTW: Chicago and IL are financially broke. IL has the lowest credit rating of any state in the U.S. due in part to high taxes, borrowing and excessive spending.

Underfunding of IL public pensions (45% funded) is the worst in the country.

John Harville

@Contango. As it seems you've already lived in virtually every location on Earth and experienced everything that can be experienced, please regale us with your adventures with Chicago politics. When you finish, and with traces of Boss Daley's 1968 tear gas still in my memory, and with a large family based in Chicago, Gary, Milwaukee, and with two cousins who retired after 30 and 35 years as Cook County deputies, and with an aunt who was a stalwart Republican 'graveyard recruiter' for 30 years from the early 40s - then we'll talk about Chicago politics.

Contango

@ John Harville:

You were a Yippie?

So Mr. Axelrod is not part of the Chicago Democrat Party political machine?

I know, I heard the story that it doesn't exist; neither does the La Cosa Nostra.

John Harville

@ Contango. I win again... you had to resort to namecalling. Yippies were not present. I was a sedate midwestern almost-college student spending some summer time with family. An observer, not a participant, unfortunately. Actually the Mayor's machine died that week. If the Machine remained intact, how do you explain Nixon 68 and 72 and Reagan 80 and 84? And Bush 2000 and 2004? Or that Dems have had the White House only 16 out of the 44 years since Chicago '68? Once again you bluster without the facts to back your blow.
But I thought you once said you lived in Chicago... no?

Contango

@ John Harville:

Abbie Hoffman and others of the Chicago Seven were not "Yippies"? You don't know history.

Surprising that the Dem Party survived after Vietnam, but obviously the people forget about the dangers of trusting govt.

Yep lived in the Chicago NW suburbs for over two decades and often worked downtown.

Locally, "The Machine" is alive and well. How do you explain decades of Dem city rule?

Do you understand the duties of precinct captains?

Pure and simple:

Mr. Axelrod went back to the playbook and the Dems "got out the vote" on a national level. An excellent piece of politicin’

I’ve seen it all before - in Chicago.

Julie R.

I'm kind of surprised (but not really) how angry people are over this. I could tell even one of the news commentators on TV was trying to keep his anger in check when he reported the final results that Obama won.

This country really IS divided and as the saying goes --- a house divided shall soon fall.

shucks

I agree.

John Harville

@Julie.. puhleese! Lincoln said "a house divided against itself cannot stand". And yet a country at war with itself still managed to 'stand'. There was great division before the sinking of the Lusitania brought us into WWI. There was even greater division during the Great Depression and the Recovery. There was great division before Pearl Harbor hurled us into WWII. Still there is great division over VietNam and the killing of 58,000 Americans.
And yet, here we 'stand'.

Julie R.

@ John Harville: Lincoln didn't make that up. He got it from the Bible.

"Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; a house divided against itself will fall."

John Harville

@Julie. Which chapter? Which translation. A modern translation from the Greek in Matthew and Mark may be more indicative for our times: "A town or family splintered by feuding will fall apart."
It would be imperative on us, then, to stop feuding here. It's up to all of us to find a common goal.

Wald

"A George divided against himself cannot stand!"

--George Costanza

Darwin's choice

These are possibly the 5 best sentences you'll ever read
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

John Harville

@Darwin. Should we assume these 'pearls' are yours? Or do you just want to post someone else's 'wisdom' as your own.
Try this - from the Bible: "To whom much is given, much will be expected." Or this one from Jesus: "I command you to love one another as I have loved you." Or, again Jesus: "Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar' and unto God that which is God's". "Whatever you do to the least of these (hungry, thirsty, naked, ill) you do unto me." Whaddaya know... Jesus again.

Wald

John, Republicans conveniently ignore the Bible when it doesn't fit their agenda, yet consider themselves Christians. Reeks of hypocrisy to me.

verdict

John is the one who is spinning the Bible to his agenda.
He is making it as if Christ would have approved more of the society which has resulted from decades of being force-fed the Left Wing paradigm (thru school and the majority of Hollywood)..rather than the society we used to have before all of that.

verdict

() "To whom much is given, much will be expected" does not equate to willingly voting to give your money to (Democrat) programs that are failing both economically and socially. That would fall below the expectation being referred to.

() "Love one another" does not equate to paying more in taxes but never making sure that the money is going to good use and actually helping people (as opposed to just further enabling their downfall).

() "Whatever you do to the least of these, you do unto me" DOES suggest that the help which you give should be responsible and productive help. Most people who claim to be "good" based on paying more in taxes, have never lifted a finger to physically help the poor. They are nothing more than sofa quarterbacks.

Darwin's choice

What the matter harville, can't accept them, so defer! Doesn't matter who's "pearls" they are, you cannot deny them as true! Twist them into a BS line for obama, azzhat.

google this> "Tax Cuts Don't Create Jobs"

Take your pick of who to read.

Wald

And yet Romney wanted to abolish Roe vs. Wade. Do you have any idea of the number of people that would need welfare if abortions ended today? But then the Republicans complain that too many people are getting handouts. Republicans want it both ways and pick and choose the "facts" that support their arguments.

verdict

Oh? Funny, history shows differently. When there was no abortion, we didn't have these kinds of problems because people understood that they would actually have to raise a child if they put themselves into the position of chancing a pregnancy.

It comes down to whether unregulated Abortion is (as well as a number of other Democrat positions are, in general) helping or hurting (acting as another enabler for the irresponsible mindset of late).

meowmix

Here's the deal-- the GOP is going to have to do some major restructuring to ever get to the White House again. Stay out of women's private parts, stay out of who is allowed to marry whom, keep your religion to yourself, develop tolerance for your fellow American's who don't have the same skin color as yourselves. You see, Latino's, blacks, women, gays, atheists--we are all combined a much larger group than you Ward Cleaver's. Time to move into the 21st century and quit passing judgment. Oh, and start distancing yourselves from the teatardians...they are really dragging you down.

Contango

@ meowmix:

So the Repubs should just agree with the Democrats? No need for the Repubs huh?

One party rule - no democracy.

Agreed that the minorities and others have been taught by the Progressives that: You can have the good life paid for by others - just vote!

Why work when the State will provide all that you need? Just quit.

Socialism is a great system until it runs out of other people's money. See: Greece and Argentina.

Randy_Marsh

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy. Tytler"
The Tea party is not in charge, The two partys are. Who is dragging who down? Your partys have failed and are creating a dependent state, If your survival depends on others for substinance YOU are the weight holding the rest of us back.

John Harville

"Tytler does admit that there are individual exceptions to the rule, and that he is ready to allow "that this form of government is the best adapted to produce, though not the most frequent, yet the most striking, examples of virtue in individuals," paradoxically because a "democratic government opposes more impediments to disinterested patriotism than any other form. To surmount these, a pitch of virtue is necessary which, in other situations, where the obstacles are less great and numerous, is not called in to exertion. The nature of a republican government gives to every member of the state an equal right to cherish views of ambition, and to aspire to the highest offices of the commonwealth" -- I can quote Tytler, too.

Randy_Marsh

John
As you can quote him then you can also see where we are heading with a dependent citizenry. The Citzens will slowly give up more freedoms and rights for material goods to sustain themselves till they can no longer sustain themselves without the Government who will take libertys with its citizens. We see this now with its ability to kill its own citizens without trial, This will be expanded on by future administrations. Power corrupts, Absolute power corrupts absolutly.

John Harville

yeah... Marsh... I CAN see where we are headed. We are one of the exceptions of which he speaks where the Democracy has the greatest potential to inspire greatness.
Read again the passage I posted - but don't read it through your hatred and overwhelming desire to be proven right in your opinion that Obama's election has doomed the nation.

Randy_Marsh

John
I do not hate at all, I just see where we are going. Its not Obama's fault alone, The last 50 years have led up to this point. The have nots overwhelm the haves and do not care what it takes to get it from them, In turn it will continue to the point where we make greece look like disneyland. BTW we are not inspiring anyone now, We are seen as a warmongers and a bunch of lazy idiots by the rest of the world.
