Sandusky police chief search committee to start over

Five city officials entrusted to make arguably Sandusky's most important hire ever have admitted they botched the entire process.

Members of a committee responsible for helping select the next police chief must rest their entire seven-month process to find a new top cop.

An attorney hired to look into the committee's progress concluded three of the five candidates are ineligible to become Sandusky's next police chief because they are not active duty and working full time.

"This should be considered a failed search," committee member Thanda Maceo said. "If we want to do justice to the citizens of Sandusky, and we are still in need of a police chief, we need to reopen the search."

For more on this story, including the committee's top pick before they scrapped the search and the potential costs, pick up a copy of Wednesday's Register.

Shall we start over with a new committee and Commissioner in charge of same and include the Law Director in the process.

Thanks Commish Cole and Commish Poole for you steadfast resolve of this issue.

What, and waste even MORE taxpayer money? For what purpose. Just put Lt Orzech in as chief and be done with it. At this point, who cares anyway.

But I do say that the next few months, there will be well trained eyes of citizens watching the commissioners....who works, who does not? Who moves anything forward, who stays in place? Who goes, who stays?.

Many people in Sandusky are SICK of watching nothing happen or screw ups such as this take place and last minutes calls costing more and more of our money for idiotic problems that could have been taken care of sooner.

There are many out here who want this nonsense ended or commissioners and others in power will see heads roll. We are fed up paying for NOTHING.

mr schwanger i agree with the first part of ur post. but please dont credit either cole or poole for their efforts. cole is only pissed because her choice to whom she promised the job, al mathews, wasnt selected. and poole was nothing more than a security guard his whole career who obviously thinks he knows law enforcement, which he duznt. but yes ur right, they should start over with a whole new committee

Centauri

This will be interesting to see who will be added to the list of the top picks.

I don't live in Sandusky but I have read all this crap. Neither side is right. First being the Committee for not sticking to the charter and then next the ones who complained at 11:59 in the short hour. Freakin' no wonder the -tuckies don't want to go there and would rather be in Fremont instead.

Westend Homeown

i often wonder why the people that don't live in sandusky constantly read about it and are so quick to judge and tell how it should or shouldn't be taken care of..... don't other cities have newspapers heck i would think even fremont would!

luvblues2

Because we care about the entire local area? Yeah, that might be it. Neighboring communities matter to some of us. We do have things to do other than in our little microcosm of "locality". Not reading ALL the local news just makes you ignorant and uninformed.

Westend Homeown

If that is how we show caring I would hate to see how we are supposed to treat our enemies! Maybe if you would have read ALL of what I wrote you would have seen I mentioned the word JUDGE... I read news from the surrounding areas as well but as I do not LIVE there I don't feel I have the right to JUDGE THEM OR THEIR TOWN especially if I am only being informed by what is being written in a newspaper article and not by living in the city and seeing it myself. And to further go on to resulting to calling people ignorant realy went all out to show how caring you really are didn't it? One last thing what did you not living here have to do with the article that it so desperately had to be the first thing mentioned in your original comment?

luvblues2

Am I to take it that I cannot comment on the Sandusky Register site because I don't live there? I do feel I have some rights just driving through the local area. I didn't know nor have I witnessed a law stating that my rights and judgment (IMHO), stop at my city limits and end at yours. When I drive through Sandusky, I expect the same rights as I have anywhere in the USA. Including cutting your city down for bad behavior. Deal with it.

luvblues2

AND really, if you love your city so much and want the bitching about it to stop, DO something. Make it change and quit calling all the rest of us around you -tuckies.

I'm sick and tired of the selection for the new police chief we have a good candidtate in John O. please hire him he seems like he is the most candidate. Tell Mr. Brown and Ms. Cole to look else where if they have any problems talk it out among them selves. I believe to hire within also when we hire from outside includding the fire dept and police something always happens and they either get fired or they quit.

trafficman

Just give the job to Orzak. Evaluate his job performance at 3 month intervals for a year. If his performance is what is expected, make it a permanent appointment. If not, then start the process over. Maybe this will work out and save the city some money.

DGMutley

The selected candidate is automatically on a probationary period of six (6) months according to the charter.

Curley

I agree with Trafficman give the job to John Orzak like I said before if someone is hired from outside either the fire or police something happens either they quit or get fired. Hire from within.

JIMBO2

It should not take a year and $28000 in expenses to select a police chief. Advertise, take applicants, City Manager does her job and selects a chief. What is so hard about it ?

wedge1

Being that the selection committee botched the whole process, don't you think that they ought to refund the taxpayers that money back. Time to pull your wallets out, folks ....

Gardenman

I don't have a lot of confidence in most of the Sandusky city leaders. They seem to botch up so many things. Seems no end to it. You elect new people to city commission and they promise the world and deliver less than satisfactory performance. Maybe ar lot Sandusky's problems are not it's citizens but rather its leaders and unfortunately it gets no better over time.

Wait a minute, I think we are forgetting that we have a law director Icsman. Isn't that what he is paid to do by the taxpayers to oversee that the decision makers AKA commissioners follow the charter and legal guidelines? All Icsman does is sit like a bump on a log. He needs to be fired as he has proven that either he is to remedial to do his job as law director, or is just plain lazy !!

20 grand down the drain now start over. Savy I say.

God Of Thunder

I keep reading, trying to find where it says, 'Smile! You're on Candid Camera!' This has to be a joke.. I cannot believe they no one on that committee didn't know that it would have to be an active policeman. Which I don't get anyway.. And the elected officials wonder why there is so much bitterness from all of the residents???
C'mon and get your heads out of your a**** and start running the city the way it should be..

SamAdams

There's an old saying that a camel is a horse designed by a committee. I think this whole police chief search more than proves the truth of it!

Most of the people posting here are right: It isn't that hard! Announce the position and required qualifications. Review the applications, and throw out those who aren't qualified. Interview the rest. Then pick the best one. Duh.

I understand that this is an important position with a lot of responsibility, but when you get right down to it, it's a JOB. Treat it like it is, and use the tried and proven hiring process any big company might use for such a position. No committees, no studies, no nonsense. And certainly no expenditure of some $28,000 that bought us nothing but another lesson in the incompetence of most who are in charge of our not-so-fair city!

Darkhorse

It comes down to staff not doing their jobs. The city continues to drop the ball with no accountability. It is time to start rolling heads. Either staff starts doing their job or you get fired; it is that simple. Costing the taxpayers money is not an option anymore for not doing your job.

wiredmama222

Mr Schwanger, neither Cole nor Poole is right, nor Brown according to the story in the paper from the findings. He did nothing wrong according to the report...as he was accused by Cole and Poole. The committee "goofed" as was reported by the investigation.

The report openly stated the most qualified is Orzak.

Too much money has been spent already to begin again only to come out right where we are now. It is pretty obvious that Orzak is who will make the five or three finalist again anyway.

Ard will drag her feet and it will be well into 2013 before this town has a new chief.

This town is overspent now....get it overwith and just put the man in and deal with it. If he fails, THEN find a new chief. He can't do any worse than the numbskulls we have had in the past, now can he. Seems he has been playing at chief anyway as he is the spokespearson at almost every leading case that comees down the pike of late while Lang stands in the background.

Just get it overwith and let it go. Its time.

This city needs to consentrate on the leaders we have and who needs to go. We need to really consider the ones who cost us money, the ones who are frivilous with our funds and who is moving us forward and who isn't? Who is doing their jobs and who are NOT? Over the next few months, let us all take a real hard look at that one....let us all watch at how is working and who is sitting on their butt doing NOTHING. The collective eyes of Sandusky should be watching because some of them need to GO....that, to, is time.

Darkhorse....I couldn't agree with you more if my head were sewn to the floor!!!!!!!

donutshopguy

These elected misfits continue the death spiral of the city of Sandusky. Maybe we need a study to understand the city charter? What's a few more wasted taxpayer dollars.

wiredmama222

That is exactly what I mean....just give it to Orzeck and be done with it. This is just stupid. Why waste any more dollars.

DGMutley

A study isn't needed to understand the city charter all one has to do is to read it. It's pretty straightforward.

wiredmama222

Right on....another study to study a study of a study. Money well spent to study the word THE.

Cityslicker

Correct spelling is John Orzech. And he is the most qualified, and should get the position without spending any more cash. Let's move forward for a change.
