Amphitheater to open this weekend at Paper District Marina

Organizers hope Saturday’s highly anticipated debut of an entertainment venue in downtown Sandusky will spawn several encores.

The long-awaited amphitheater at the city’s Paper District Marina, on Shoreline Drive next to the Chesapeake Lofts, opens for its first show at the inaugural Docktoberfest.

Docktoberfest — dubbed for the boat docks at the marina — celebrates the fall season with seasonal food, drinks and music.

While a traditional amphitheater features a large stage facing rising tiers of seats in a semicircle, Sandusky’s amphitheater is much different.

The open-air, bay-front setup fits 1,000 people comfortably, whether on lawn chairs or blankets, around the marina’s green space.

Would be a nice place to sit and watch the Keller building crumble to the ground.

wiredmama222

lol...I hope no one gets hit in the head though. Maybe the "vibes" will help it along. I think this is nice. Cool out though. Bring warm clothes.

Great news Sandusky! This area will rock. Potential unlimted.

I'll be going! Sounds like fun!

Hmm, It would be great if this is a success. I always had a great time down there back in the days of "Rock on the Dock", so I hope this time it stays around for a while!

camero

will be great next summer hope it works out just going to be to cold and rainy this weekend im sitting in the house and watching movies

Sandusky's little secret! I never knew the place existed. Dockside Cafe was complicated to find for a first timer. (The street was barricaded off when i was there a couple weeks ago.) What a scenic place for a beverage and yummy fries! Friendly attendants & servers; Koozies on hand to keep your "beer" chilled while enjoying the view. I want to check Docktoberfest out! See you there!

Any chance the city will fix the street in front of the amphitheater and marina? Millions of dollars are invested in both plus chesapeak and the street is in horrible shape. Honestly it is a shame.

I would like to know who's boat has been in the same dock all year. Transient Marina? Special favors for someone in city government, or the Marina Operator taking advantage of his position and letting some one dock for the season? Who is soo soo special to get a seasonal dock while others can,t. Will the City Manager Look into this???? Will the Register Investigate???? Will Tim S Or Sharon J Ask these questions at the city council meetings? Does any body care that something fishy is happening? Are daily dock fees being collected and accounted for??????? Who has the answers??????????

luvblues2

If you have a phone, PROLINE20, call yourself. Why ask in a newspaper forum?

Factitious

This is a stupid comment. Why limit time in a Marina that's mostly empty? When the place starts to fill up, THEN you limit time to give someone else a chance.

And is there any basis at all for the accusations, or is it just libel?

Proline: Why must someone else look into your question? The city manager is assessable to everyone just pick up the phone and ask away. There are also public records you can request on the marina such as their monthly reports. As for the boat that is constantly there, we all know who it belongs too. Transient is classified as no more then 10 days but it seems this boat has special priveledges to dock all summer long. As for the street in front of the marina, it is a horrible mess and looks like the city doesn't care. We are trying to show case the marina and no one cares about the up keep. What a shame.

PROLINE20

DARKHORSE: I contacted the city. Kelly Kresser indictaed that she would forward my concerns to the Recreation Department Staff. This was on 09/14. Never heard from them. Contacted her again and she said The General Services Director told her the topic would be discussed next week. Still have not heard back. Deaf ears in the city management?????????? Is the boat that has been there all summer getting free dockage at the tax payers expense??????????

FireFly

That's the owner of the cafe's boat. Sure you get a perk for running the marina for the city for peanuts. Just do a search on the boat license printed on the side of the boat you small minded person.

Phil Packer

I will freeze my azz off, but at least it's sunny!!! See you all there!

Darkhorse

IF the boat belongs to the cafe manager, I think that should be spelled out in the contract. I wonder how much more was missed in the contract? How is the marina a transient marina and we have boats in the marina for more then 10 days? Either it is a transient marina or it isn't, which is it? No manager should have the priviledge of docking his boat for the summer in a transient marina, IF that is the case. As for not getting a straight answer from staff, stop fooling with staff and go to the city manager. When you get a run around, it means there is something going on that shouldn't be going on.

Julie R.

I can't speak for the city of Sandusky but I sure can speak for the county. When they give you the run around take it to the bank they're covering up something they're doing and/or have already done that is and/or was illegal.

FireFly

Why do you even care? Not like the marina has ever been full. Waste of money to even have it built in my opinion. And the city manager is in direct communication with the business owner. I have even seen her down at Dockside for lunch.

PROLINE20

TO FIREFLY: Talking about peanuts, He is leasing the building for peanuts. $500.00 a month. The city spent 15K to install the hood, fire supression, etc. At that rate 500 x 6 months lease = 3K. It will take the city 5 years to even break even on their equipment investment. Furthermore, the city pays the utilities, trash removal, maintenance on the property, etc. Plus he is getting over 2k of free dockage for the year. Talking about taking advantage of the system

Darkhorse

Can you imagine what next year's contract is going to look like? The city took a beating on the trash hauling alone. The place makes a lot of trash and the city had to add on more pickups and trash cans to contain it all. Proline, the city is not making any money off the deal. He pays us $500 for rental and the city turns around and gives it all back to him in the way of $500 for management fees. What kind of deal is that?

PROLINE20

DARKHORSE HIT IT RIGHT ON THE HEAD. HOW DID HE GET A NO BID CONTRACT?????????? CITY DECLARED AN EMERGENCY AND GAVE THE FACILITY TO HIM WITHOUT ANY PUBLIC NOTICES OR INVITATIONS TO BID. THE REGISTER ARTICLE SAID HE WAS SUCH A GREAT GUY FOR STEPPING IN AND HELPING THE CITY. TAKING THE TAXPAYERS MONEY MAKES HIM A GREAT GUY ????

FireFly

U would all crap your pants if you knew how much $$$$ that little food shack made the owners this summer!!

Darkhorse

This is the second year of the marina's operation and hardly any revenue was made on the marina. There is more money going out then coming in. Something has to be done by next year. We can't continually be operating the marina in the red.

FireFly

City = loss of $$$$
Dockside Cafe renters = $$hundreds of thousands in food profits in a few, short months!
Who's winning here?! Not the city.

PROLINE20

How about he next contract, the city getting 500 a month plus 25% of the gross sales.

WaterStreetCooncat

About 12 people showed up. More band members there than festival goers & the bands' sound system sounded blown. I was hiding in the Keller Structure snarfling down a sheep head. Mmmmmmmmm.
