A 16-year-old teenager was rushed to the hospital Tuesday night after a van struck him in front of a house in the 14000 block of Darrow Road.

The driver of the van, Gary V. Fitzpatrick, 21, 2610 West Erie Ave., Lorain, fled the scene shortly after hitting the teen but was later caught.

The man also struck a building in Lorain earlier that evening and appeared to be heading west into Erie County. After he allegedly hit the teen, he drove a short distance farther into a utility pole, managed to start his van and drive it a little bit farther until it stopped running. He then got out and started pushing the van down the road, according to a report from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The boy, who was walking along a ditch with a friend, suffered severe leg and head trauma. He was transported by North Central EMS to Community Health Partners in Lorain. He was later taken by EMS to Cleveland Metro Hospital.

Troopers determined Fitzpatrick was operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol, and driving while under suspension.

He was charged with aggravated vehicular assault, OVI, driving under suspension, hit-skip, and failure to control. The aggravated vehicular assault charge is a felony of the third degree. He was incarcerated at the Erie County Jail pending his arraignment.
