Huron schools anticipate major budget shortfall

Administrators at Huron Schools said they could be face a $2 million shortfall by the end of the school year.

And while the district could plug the hole by dipping into its $7.7 million rainy day fund, that certainly wouldn’t be ideal.

When treasurer Mike Weis presented the budget forecast at a meeting Tuesday, he laid out the bottom line: income simply can’t keep up with expenses, as state dollars, property taxes and grant funding continue to decline.

Weis said the gap could be closer to just $1.6 million, rather than $2 million, if income and expenses end up as he hopes.

“There are a lot of unknowns right now that I can’t guarantee,” he said.

Darwin's choice

So, the current board of "lawyers", are again showing their incompetence in hiring this "glowing" replacement? Who is the law office for the board? Maybe the boards law firm recomended not to hire him, and again, they went against their own lawyers advice! Either way, if Mr. Wechter was able to find this information, why wasn't the board able to? As Forrest Gump says, "stupid is as stupid does".

Amen, Darwin !

The administration of this school system is a mess. It is dysfunctional and destructive.

The superintendent, the treasurer and the board members need to be sent packing. The whole rotten disgusting bunch.

As with cancer, you have to remove all the bad cells or it grows back.

Julie R.

The school accumulated a $7 million dollar rainy day fund because of the high property taxes everybody has been paying for YEARS and YEARS thanks to the last two INCOMPETENT auditors before Rick Jeffrey took over. Good thing they accumulated it because those days are over.

Nice letter in the forum Sold. Looks like the repeater fixed your spelling errors.

When you mention the "astute board" in your sarcasm I'm sure you are including Mr. Caporini and Mr. Asher? Funny.

Ακόμη Sold σχετ...

Donut you would be CORRECT ! (Although obviously Caporini and Asher have attempted to follow the law ?)..

Sold will never agree but Caporini and Asher will be "taken down" before this ends. They're not protecting Fox. They're protecting themselves.

Ακόμη Sold σχετ...

Tell us more oh wise one..
Just what are those two protecting themselves from ?

I really want to know what you think you know.
I really expect nothing from you as you, as usual, can't say anything unless I do first. Oh wait.. I did so now you have something to write about.

Now keep it straight Kidding.. Don't criticize what I have said. Tell us all what you know. Why are Caporini and Asher protecting themselves ?

For real. If you really have something to add besides allegations.. Add it.

With your sarcasm about "astute" board members are you talking about the whole board? Funny.

Ακόμη Sold σχετ...

Like you, I'm including them all, but the only common denominator in the 'rainy day fund' is John Caporini.

I believe, and I may be wrong, but the reason I say: I believe.. That the 'Rainy Day Fund' is something the board is forced to accumulate by the state.

I never said any of this board was right. I do believe that Caporini and Asher were actually looking out for the school, the board and Mr. Fox when they asked for the rest to follow the law ? How could anyone be against that ?

Sold what pray tell have you added to this topic over the last 4 months other than repeating yourself over and over? New register articles come out but your nutty rants are the same. Please state something that you haven't already put on these fox blogs. I understand you are being attacked and your ego is causing you to respond but your responses are the same every time. Take your own advise and come up with something new ok my little nutty buddy!

Amen, Tmm !

Ακόμη Sold σχετ...

You're right Tmm..
I'm bored with it, too.

So I will just wait for the outcome which I have predicted.

I have been having fun bantering with KiddingMe, but even that is getting old fast because KiddingMe really does not have an original thought. If what the folks on here say is considered an attack, I only wish it were the worst I'd ever been under. Keep trying.

Fred Fox is an innocent man who got caught up in politics.

I really don't have anything to add to that.

You're right, Tmm.

From now on I'm going to just post this:
Wake up, Huron.. We need a new board of education !

PS.. Politics aside, it's just good business sense not to spit in the face of your number one benefactor.. (There's no spell check, but I will assume you can read and know what I mean, Tmm).

Ακόμη Sold σχετ...

Wake up, Huron.. We need a new board of education !

(There it is, Tmm..)

Wake up, Huron...elect Sold for board of education ! He will stop the bleeding. Sold will implement smart cost reduction actions that are needed. He won't focus on getting rid of Fox and chase away the district's largest philanthropic supporter. He knows what questions to ask and understands that Fox led this District out of receivership and to solid academic and financial success. He is the only one on here that gets that we desperately need Mr. Fox back.

Is this more to your liking, Sold ? This sounds like a new thought to me !

Ακόμη Sold σχετ...

lol... That's perfect Ugta !
(Except Sold is not running for the board and I'm not the only one here that understands Fred Fox's worth.. But.. Vote for Sold ! A vote for Sold is one less for Sowecke).

Great post ! I'm still laughing. You do have a sense of humor.

well once again the register screw something up time of entries is all over the place not worth following

Ακόμη Sold σχετ...

Amen Middleclass !

Well said sold. I agree about replacing the board.

Middle class if everyone on here would use the Add New Comment box instead of hitting reply these comments would be easier to follow.

Julie R.

Tmm is correct. Use the Add New Comment box instead of hitting Reply so the comments will be easier to follow. Maybe the SR could go back to telling which comments are NEW, also.

Ακόμη Sold σχετ...

I like that the replies end up under the comment.

When this is all said and done the current Huron BOE needs an overhaul.

Scott Slocum is currently looking for a job and will probably move out of the district.

Donna Greene will have to answer for the Huron Memorial Stadium sign debacle.

Tim Sowecke will have to answer for the acting outside of his responsibilities and delivering the Markling report to the OEC without asking the rest of the board.

Caporini and Asher, (while attempting to keep the board following the law), will be seen by half of the Huron residents as attempting to protect Fred Fox, or themselves.

They all should just go.

Any time the average resident can name all 5 BOE members is a bad thing. They are just supposed to do their jobs and then get re-elected because no one runs against them. I'm going to bet that there will be some competition in the next couple elections.. lol

Ακόμη Sold σχετ...

Oops.. I forgot:

Wake up, Huron.. We need a new board of education !

Julie R.

I'm beginning to see your point, Sold ..... maybe they should ALL go.

Ακόμη Sold σχετ...

Julie R-
I am really physically ill over this mess. It's like a snowball rolling downhill and picking up victoms as it rolls.

The whole situation could have been prevented if Tim Sowecke had not, on his own,(and with no knowledge to the other 4 Huron BOE members), taken the erroneous Markling report to the OEC thus making it a public document.

Fred Fox has been tried by the public and according to what was in the report.

I don't see any other way to disassociate this board's actions from the Huron City Schools besides a complete overhaul.

Now.. After having said that I really, truly believe that John Caporini and Kevin Asher have tried to keep this mess legal, but are being out voted 3-2 consistantly. I don't believe those two deserve to be the next victoms from this mess.

Ακόμη Sold σχετ...

I especially enjoyed reading this part of the Register's crow eating article:

'It's unfortunate the Markling report made the erroneous allegations against Nelson, and the error puts the entire report in question regarding all of its conclusions.'

Wake up Huron.. We need a new board of education !

Ακόμη Sold σχετ...

Also from the Register:

'End result: Any allegations that Fred Fox pushed for Kalahari to receive a more favorable tax break have fallen by the wayside.'

Ακόμη Sold σχετ...

It's been what.. 8 months since this rendition of the Huron Board of Education has been in place. How much education do you think they've discussed ?

In fact, the only thing this board has accomplished is to get an erroneous, lawyered up report into the hands of the public to smear the good name of Fred Fox.

Many people have weighed in on this 'debate' over the past several months. Many of them had their opinions swayed by the flawed report. In fact, most of you only know what you have read in that report.

What is it exactly you are all upset with Fred Fox about now that the truth has come out that the report you are quoting is not the truth ?

Good luck repairing what this has done to the district. This is worse than receivership. This is worse than a 'major budgetary downfall'. This is a situation that will not heal itself.

Lawsuits from this mess are going to go on for years and cost everyone in legal fees and awards.

And the worst part is: Who is worried about educating Huron students. The Three Stooges ? Apparently the only thing they are worried about is the criminal mastermind Fred Fox. Even to the point of hiring a replacement superintendent with a highly questionable backround and then paying said super about $700 a day plus fringes. He even gets paid to and from his home in Bowling Green.

The Three Stooges seem to do everything hastily and without thinking what the fallout will be. We voted them into office by voting and by not voting. We put ourselves into this mess.

How are we going to fix it ?

None of this changes the fact that Fox had an affair during work hours using work resources. He should be fired for that alone, since that is tantamount to stealing. He also took gifts from a vendor (Kalahari) of more than $25 in value. Both of these things violate ethics rules. Fox should absolutely NOT return.

Ακόμη Sold σχετ...

OK Informed:
Kalahari is NOT A VENDOR ! I repeat: NOT A VENDOR !
They sell nothing to the Huron City Schools. Vendors do.
I hope this clears up that issue in your mind because IT IS NOT AN ISSUE !
Didn't you read the articles in this newspaper stating that there was nothing out of the ordinary about Kalahari's tax abatements ? Kalahari pays taxes to the Huron City Schools. THEY ARE NOT A VENDOR !

Once again let's go over this affair business.
Fred Fox is a 24 hour 7 days a week employee. His time on and off the clock often merge. I would like you, or anyone else for that matter, to prove what Fred Fox did, or did not do on and off the clock for the last year. Good luck.

This is all you have ?

And by the way.. A violation of an ethics 'rule' should warrent verbal, followed by written warnings, followed by suspension with pay, followed by suspension without pay, followed by termination . Someone forgot to write Fred Fox up.

Wake up Informed.. I mean Huron ! We need a better board !
