Huron schools anticipate major budget shortfall

Administrators at Huron Schools said they could be face a $2 million shortfall by the end of the school year.

And while the district could plug the hole by dipping into its $7.7 million rainy day fund, that certainly wouldn’t be ideal.

When treasurer Mike Weis presented the budget forecast at a meeting Tuesday, he laid out the bottom line: income simply can’t keep up with expenses, as state dollars, property taxes and grant funding continue to decline.

Weis said the gap could be closer to just $1.6 million, rather than $2 million, if income and expenses end up as he hopes.

“There are a lot of unknowns right now that I can’t guarantee,” he said.

looks like you transposed the letter "a" and "c", correct spelling is... scared

Amen !

I am almost 100% with you Donut !

Except for the part where Freddy Boy isn't perfect. Right?

Ακόμη Sold σχετ...

I highly doubt you would be allowed to call Mr. Fox, Freddy Boy in a face to face with him ?

And in answer, you are correct. I do not in any way, shape, or form claim that Fred Fox is perfect, but in comparison to the board and the treasurer.. I'm only going to say again that I am almost 100% with what Donut said.

Sit n Spin

I forgot that Freddy Boy was such a hard a$$. Please Sold, I've been in his presence on several occasions and he is anything but that. Watch UgtB Freddy Boy might go all Ninja on ya !

You highly doubt I would be ALLOWED to call Mr. Fox Freddy Boy in a face to face? Why wouldn't I be ALLOWED? Are you now policing cooth? Granted, it might not be nice, it might be tacky but to say I am not ALLOWED is nonsense. Everytime I read your blogs I think "You got to be kidding me!"

Tsu Dho Nimh

rickross2...caught your comment earlier today and it was funny! I've always thought that Sold has his head so far up Fox's behind that it looks like he is wearing a brown dog collar.

Huron..."scared" Fox is right!

Amen, Tsu !

Darwin's choice

well, haters, who do you think accrued that "rainy day fund" ? certainly not the current board members.........

Ακόμη Sold σχετ...

Exactly Darwin. People posting on here have nothing to add except comedy. Too bad they missed the part about the rainy day fund. Where did it come from ? In return for discount golf ? A donation from the Huron Hardware store ?

No.. Wait..

Keep up the jokes. Who will be laughing the hardest will be the lawyers.

This is all fun and games until someone's reputation and career are ruined by an illegally delivered report documenting not one person under oathe. Plenty will be under oathe after this is over. But.. none of you. Sit back and do nothing for anyone and watch someone who has get raked over the coals. Now THAT'S entertainment.

Fox doesn't have a vote but he is to credit for the hefty rainy day fund? I don't think so. The treasurer is responsible for getting and keeping the district financially sound.

Ακόμη Sold σχετ...

U Got To Be Kidding Us-
Responsible for getting and keeping ?

The treasurer is responsible for counting. Oh.. and notes from meetings called minutes.

Now a good treasurer makes sure the district follows the letter of the law in it's spending and also in it's saving.

Getting and keeping.. That's priceless... hahaaha

Ακόμη Sold σχετ...

You go Bear !
Time to spend some of that fund. How much RAIN has to fall ? Interesting that this report on being 'in the hole' comes now ?

Who do we blame ?

Or.. Is this just the way business is done and maybe the treasurer should have just asked this astute board if they could cover the debt ? Funny.

Ακόμη Sold σχετ...

How do you folks possibly not find a way to attack Fred Fox ?

Where do you think the 7 million dollar rainy day fund came from ? Your pockets.

And when the liability insurance runs out at 10 million, guess what ?

I assume you guessed you would be paying again ?

Let's see... After we run out the liability and then the 'rainy day fund'... What do you think the board could get if they sold 'Kalahari Field' ?

To me it's no surprise that Huron is in the hole by $1.6 - $2 million at the end of this year. This is true in school system after school system across the state. The state legislature and the Governor put these budget cuts in place last year to plug the hole in the state budget. Not just schools were hit with up to 33% cut it also hit towns, cities, townships, counties, etc took almost a 50% hit in state funding this year. Those are pretty big cuts to did yourself out of when you have many fixed expenses.

Trying have any realistic working budget by any of these govermental levels is extremely different. All of us were pleased by the cuts in property taxes many of us received but many of us also said what happens when less dollars are going to townships, cities, counties, schools etc. Well those cuts in property taxes could mean cuts in services, people. Result will be all of those levels of government possibly asking for additional voter approved levies.

There is always the echos of those who will say cut people, services, etc. BUT the reality cut but don't cut plowing my street when it snows or filling the chuck holes on the roads I drive or cut police patrols in my neighborhood. The philosophy is it's fine to cut services that affect the other guy BUT just not those that affect me personally.

I have no doubt that Huron City Schools are short funds in the upcoming months. I have no doubt they have spent scarce funds for unnecessary legal services.

The unfortunate reality is no matter how dire their need is this Board has created an environment that those who have supported their requests for money in the past and those that probably would have voted for it this time will not vote for it.

It may just take an entirely new Board of Education sitting at the table before this community passes another school levy regardless of how badly the money is needed.

Tsu Dho Nimh

You are correct in that the financial decline is being experienced by all school districts and is not unique to Huron. At this point, the district's insurance policy is paying for the legal fees and will for quite a while. As far as possibly passing a levy, I agree that one would not stand a snowball's chance in hell at this time. However, let us not forget that Huron typically cannot pass a levy the first time through. The Fox situation would be a convenient excuse for those who always vote against a levy.

Finally TDN !
It's you again !
(Who's been writing your material lately ?)

Ακόμη Sold σχετ...

Amen, Gardenman !

Well thought out and you sure make sense.

Ακόμη Sold σχετ...

You are a lot less than I gave you credit for.

If my head's where you say at least it's only up one. You seem to stick your head into anyone's who will sing your same tune ?

Eventually TDN it's going to be a pretty lonely place to spend your time.

Come up with your own information like you used to. Even if it didn't approach the truth, at least it was more entertaining then you just saying, 'Good one !' every time one of these hater's types.

Tsu Dho Nimh

I will tell you why I do not have "discussions" with you anymore. You spend your time criticizing people's spelling and grammar usage but sound like a crybaby when someone points out yours (i.e. Attorneys). You call people names (i.e. monkey testis). When was the last time you "agreed to disagree" with anyone on these posts? You attack people regarding what they have said when if fact it was someone else who has shared the thought. If I find a comment funny, I will let the person know I thought it was funny. I could care less if you think less of me. You are not that important!

Ακόμη Sold σχετ...

In the end I may not be 'that important', but after this is all said and done what I have said over and over will turn out to be 'that important' and all that you have said won't make a difference whether it was spelled correctly, or not.

As I have repeatidly said: If you have nothing to add, then why bother ?

And as for what you claimed above:
#1 = I only criticize people's lack of having anything to say. I did one time question whether a particular poster could actually complete a sentence and for that I 'spend my time criticizing' ?

Here's a word from this 'crybaby': I'm not going to gloat when the mess ends up back in the 3 Stooges' laps. I will still be very unhappy that it all had to happen and allow people who do nothing for anyone else to judge someone who has done so much.

Good luck to you TDN.. I really, at one time, thought you really had something to say.

How does a school district accumulate $7 million in a fund for rainy days? I'm honestly asking.

Tsu Dho Nimh

I thought the dollar amount was high, too.

I agree with both of you-it is high. But I'll give them (the Board, Weis, and Fox) credit for saving it and not spending. (Not saying Fox is right nor wrong, but under his leadership he did help the school financially.)

So did the school district under-estimate the funds generated from levies? Did the school district over-estimate expenses?

Darwin's choice

It's taken many years to accumulate the fund, and with some good leadership, and vision. The current board has had nothing to do with it! I believe Fred Fox is the only one of the group that has been there all along. And, who vetted the newest superintendent?

Tsu Dho Nimh

As surprising and disturbing as the allegations are, it is very possible that none of this would have shown on a typical backgroung check. A BCI check would not have shown this and he has multiple teaching licenses, all in good standing. He also had good recommendations. Mr. Wechter DID NOT perform a simple google search to find these files. Try googling his name and you will see that very little appears and what does is positvie articles praising his leadership. These files are the work of a law office. Chris Wechter is working on behalf of his good buddy, Fred Fox.

Ακόμη Sold σχετ...

Possibly Chris Wechter is, but isn't it time someone did ?

I, for one, do not care about the 'current' super.

And for the record: Find a post where I corrected someone's spelling ? I could care less. And as for 'pig testi'.. I'll claim that as calling a spade a spade.

You obviously ran out of solid arguement and then joined the bunch who only comment on me instead of what is going on with the Huron Board of Education. It's ok.. I no longer agree to disagree. This is a mess, and is a mess because of the actions of 3 board members.. and two of them are not Asher and Caporini. As I have said many times: I may not be Asher and Caporini's biggest fan, but in this case they are right.
