An elderly Oak Harbor man was seriously injured after the tractor he was driving collided with a car Wednesday afternoon.
Robert H. Bartell, 83, 2036 South Ohio 19, was driving a John Deere farm tractor north on Ohio 19, south of Cullman Road, and attempting to turn into a private drive when he was struck by a Ford Taurus driving south.
Bartell was ejected from the tractor. He came to rest in the road and was run over by the tractor, according to a report from the Sandusky post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. He suffered incapacitating injuries and was taken by helicopter to the Medical University of Ohio at Toledo. A hospital spokeswoman said she had no record of him as a patient.
The driver of the 2003 Ford Taurus, Jerrad L. Shiets, 38, 9451 West Ohio 163, Oak Harbor, was wearing a seat belt and was not injured. His passenger, Jacob L. Shiets, 11, also was wearing a seat belt and was not injured. The vehicle sustained disabling damage after it went off the right side of the road, striking a mailbox and landing in a ditch.
It was towed by Bill’s Towing of Oak Harbor, along with the tractor.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted by the Oak Harbor Police Department, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department, Mid-County EMS, St. Vincent’s Life-Flight and the Portage Fire Department.
Alcohol is not a factor in the crash, and the crash remains under investigation.
